Barnardo’s first project in Northern Ireland was a soup kitchen opened in 1899 on Great Victoria Street, Belfast. Although Barnardo’s has gone through many changes since then our work is still firmly based on the philosophy of our founder Dr Thomas Barnardo, that every child deserves the best possible start in life whatever their background.

Our range of work today includes:n early intervention programmesn child & family support n education supportn fostering

We work with:n young carersn children with disabilitiesn children of prisonersn young people vulnerable to sexual exploitationn ethnic minority familiesn families where there is domestic violencen young people leaving caren children who have been bereavedn children in families where there is substance misusen young people with mental health issues

We also champion children’s rights bringing vital issues to the attention of the public and the NI Executive including, young people not in employment, education or training (NEET), child sexual exploitation and child poverty.

At Barnardo’s we believe in children – no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through. We will support them, stand up for them and bring out the best in each and every child.
