Regarded as the historic college town of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro-plex, Denton is a local hotspot for music, art, and a unique atmosphere. This charming reputation sometimes overshadows the city’s appeal for outdoor recreation, and area residents may be surprised to also discov-er Denton as a scenic getaway. In addition to its neighborhood parks and playgrounds, Denton offers major trails and special-interest parks.

On the north end of Denton, visitors can enjoy open scenery while visiting Denton’s water park or free, fully equipped skate park. Water Works Park features giant slides and a continuous-flowing river, but the park’s amount of green space is not so typical.Along with the fact that coolers and outside food are allowed, guests often take advantage of the park’s calm, grassy areas by setting up for the day and picnicking.

Area residents may also take pleasure in Denton’s more unique facili-ties. Located in Lake Forest Park, Wiggly Field Dog Park provides dog stations, both human and pet drinking fountains, and fenced areas to separate large and small dogs. Across town, hobbyists and athletes can advantage from a variety of facilities such as a batting range, a golf practice center, a disc golf course, and a radio-control aircraft runway.

Online users can discover Denton’s parks and trails by visiting the “Parks and Trails” page on the City of Denton Parks and Recreation website, www.dentonparks.com. The site gives the option to explore with an interactive map or browse

through the parks and trails listing. Each park page features photos, directions, and a list of the park’s amenities.

The Denton Parks and Recreation Department also utilizes the city’s extensive facilities by offering “enriching” programs, including annual fun runs, free movies in the park, and a community fishing program.Through the department’s outdoor recreational program, area resi-dents can even explore Denton’s creeks and trails with skilled staff and knowledgeable volunteers. The program allows participants to kayak, canoe, hike, and geocache without having previous experience or their own equipment. Additional information on activities and programs is also available at the department’s website.

Welcome to the future.Sure there aren’t anyflying cars, tele-

The A-train is theDenton County TransportationAuthority’s answer to I-35E, atravel necessity and yet frequentannoyance to drivers, passen-gers, residents, businesses andeveryone else with an interest inI-35E in Denton County.

There’s something in the air. No, not just the sound of thetrain horn as the mighty DCTArail fleet starts rolling on thetracks, it’s excitement at thisnew travel option.

Don’t think I am just somehired hand here to write ahappy note about the trainwithout experiencing it formyself. Where you are, rightnow, reading this magazine, iswhere I was several weeks ago. Iwas finding out firsthand howthe train experience will be.

The car youwill be riding inon the outset ofrail service arerail diesel carsmanufacturedby Budd in the1960s.

They belonged to DART for awhile but DCTA is using themuntil they get the new cars fromSwitzerland which are stillunder construction.

The first of those will be deliv-ered in late July, bringing sever-al upgrades to the already greatrail experience.

The new fleet will featurelevel boarding where passengerscan walk right on as opposed tohaving to step up in the currentcars. Passengers will have aneasier time maneuvering bikes, wheel chairs and strollers intothe cars. There will be bike rackson those vehicles and greater

people capacity. The cars willoperate at a higher rate of speed, offering greater frequencybetween trips, more fuel effi-ciency and operate quieterthrough the neighborhoods.

After taking a seat in one ofthe cars, and deciding to faceforward, I prepared to take it allin. The seats were cushy, withplenty of distance between therows to stretch my feet outunder the seat in front of me.Mind you, I am a short guy, butrest assured you leggy peoplewill have room to do the same.

With a scream of the horn, the train set off in motion. Therewas a shiver to the car as itpulled off.

The operator chimed in overthe PA system welcoming ridersto the train and giving out somewarnings and sound safetyadvice when riding the rail.

The cars sway a bit from leftto right as it winds along thecurves and straights from onestation to the next. But honestly, side to side is better than for-ward and backward as youmeander through bumper-to-

bumper traffic on I-35E.Riding the train, you get a

good view of I-35 as well. Servesas a good reminder to you formaking a better travel decisiondoesn’t it? And for those in traf-fic, they can look over and seethe train and wonder why theydidn’t hop on.

Before you know it you’re atthe next station, outfitted withtrashcans, benches and place-holders for maps of the systemand other pertinent informa-tion.

After a brief stop, doors close, the operator chimes in aboutthe next stop and off you go. It’s simple, carefree and here tohelp you help the North Texasregion.

That’s been the goal of DCTA,which formed in 2002 with theidea of making a dent in all thattraffic congestion, enhance airquality and just life in generalfor Denton County residents. With a toot of the horn andchugalug of the mighty DCTAfleet up and down the rail corri-dor, we are well on our way.

A-train: Bikes part of plan

Denton Record-Chronicle/Barron LudlumWill Warrington says he is looking forward to new A-train.

By Rachel MehlhaffStaff Writer

Will Warrington decided topark his pickup and purchasean electric bicycle in February, using his tax refund. The onlytrouble with riding a bike whilelooking for a job is it limits yourparameters. Warrington, whountil recently was on the jobhunt, was putting a lot of hopein the opening of the A-train—itwould allow him to widen hissearch.

Warrington recently landed ajob at United Commercial CastStone in Denton, making hisneed for the A-train less crucialbut he still plans to use it.

“I’m sure the A-train will behandy in the future whether I’mlooking for a job or going to aconcert,” he said.

During his job hunt,

Warrington was finding thatmany of the jobs he was quali-fied for were in Dallas but hewas limited by his bike. He saidhis pickup still runs but it’s notvery reliable—not to mentionthe rising cost of gas prices.

Now the A-train will give himthe opportunity to visit theDallas Arboretum or take in ashow or a concert in Dallas.

His hope is that he will beable to take his bike, along withits 30-pound battery, on thetrain and ride it around inDallas. The battery makes hisbike weigh in at 85 pounds, hesaid.

And Denton CountyTransportation Authority plansfor the A-train to be bike friend-

When it comes to electricbicycles like Warrington’s ormotorized bicycles, DCTA willallow it as long as it doesn’t takeup addition room or slow downthe boarding process, said DeeLeggett, vice president of com-munications and planning atDCTA. “It’s really about the

DCTA wants to be as bikefriendly as it can withoutimpacting operation, she said.“Some of those things we wouldhave to address on a case by casebasis,” Leggett said.

DCTA

Where it all started

DCTA is a CoordinatedCounty TransportationAuthority as defined in Chapter460 of the Texas TransportationCode. Following a successfulcounty-wide authorization elec-tion, DCTA was granted powerto plan, develop, acquire, con-struct, own, operate, and main-tain a public transportation sys-tem in Denton County. Thepowers and duties exercised byDCTA and the Board ofDirectors are impacted bynumerous federal and state lawsand regulations and are guidedby the Authority’s vision, mis-sion and core values.

The legislation authorizingDCTA’s creation required that aService Plan be developed bythe Authority. The Service Planwas submitted to the voters ofeight cities in Denton County onSeptember 13, 2003, for consid-eration and approval of a one-half percent sales and use tax.The election was successful inthe cities of Denton, HighlandVillage, and Lewisville.Imposition of the sales and usetax, dedicated to the Authorityfor implementation of theService Plan, began January 1,2004.

This Service Plan included arail component and three layersof bus service, including interimregional commuter bus service, local fixed route bus service, anddemand response service. In2004, DCTA began work to ful-fill the promises of the ServicePlan by funding the existing busoperations which led to theacquisition of those operationsin 2005. Also in 2005, DCTAlaunched a Bus and ParatransitStudy which served as a tool indetermining the level of bus andparatransit service needed inour service areas. In 2006,DCTA began two new services –

Commuter Express in May andConnect in Lewisville inNovember. These actions ful-filled the bus components of theAuthority’s Service Plan.

In 2006, DCTA also began afleet modernization effort whichhas included the addition of 17low-floor Gilligs, 12 cutawaysand several support vehicles.Another five Gilligs are current-ly on order with funds from theAmerican Recovery andReinvestment Act and theagency is purchasing six addi-tional cutaways.

Most recently, the agencyrestructured and expanded localfixed routes to better serve tran-sit-supportive land uses, consol-idated paratransit service areasand launched a pilot demand-response program in HighlandVillage. The agency has alsoworked with the University ofNorth Texas to create a nine-route university system that car-ries up to 15,000 passengers aday.

DCTA has quickly establisheda physical presence in our com-munities with park and ridefacilities, passenger amenitiesand the construction of a locallyfunded rail project and theDowntown Denton TransitCenter. The Authority’s five-yearcapital plan also includes a BusOperations & MaintenanceFacility to accommodate antici-pated growth in the transit serv-ices.

The Authority’s aggressiveapproach to service implemen-tation has resulted in anincrease in transit ridership byover 60% since taking over cityservices in 2005. The agency’sridership gains were recognizedin 2008 by the Federal TransitAdministration with the

Denton offers several houses of history

This photo shows one of the many historical rooms in one ofDenton’s museums.

Sometimes the word “history”conjures up a yawn for peoplenot naturally drawn to things ofthe past. Youngsters, especially, often harbor yearnings that his-tory would stay in the class-room. They think dusty. Old.Boring.

Wrong! Not so in Denton! The vibrancy of Denton’s

downtown is tangible. Thepulsing, creative life of almost50,000 students between theUniversity of North Texas andTexas Woman’s University keepsthe area hopping 24/7. TheCenter for Visual Arts, theHickory Street Arts Corridor, galleries, more than 20 livemusic venues, coffee houses, plus local fare to fit any palettebeckon from original architec-ture. Entertainment, antiques,

eclectic shopping mix withupscale, urban living. And thewhole energetic vibe windsamong Denton County’s housesof history.

The Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum sits in theheart of Denton, literally, as thecrown in the middle of thesquare in the middle of the city.Built in 1896, the Courthousehas served Denton County con-tinuously for more than 105years. In fact, the CountyCommissioners Court stillmeets out justice from theornate, second floor courtroom. But the entire first floor is dedi-cated to Denton County history. The museum offers exhibits, special collections, and histori-cal documents providing visi-tors an overview of the commu-

nities, residents, lifestyles, andcultures that have contributedto Denton County’s rich her-itage. Of course, the courthouse

herself is a main attraction, too.Guests love wandering her hall-

ways, imagining the heroes andleaders and, yes, even outlawsthat have walked those samefloors in the past. TheCourthouse lawn is the livingroom of Denton, a gatheringplace throughout the year forfamilies, couples, students, musicians – often everyone atonce when the lawn plays hostto festivals like Arts, Antiques &Autos in September and theHoliday Lighting Festival inDecember. Her clock towerbeckons at night atop thou-sands of tiny white lightssparkling in stately pecan treesthat, by day, offer shade andrespite. The Denton CountyCourthouse is one of the mostphotographed courthouses inTexas. One visit and you’ll seewhy.

The Historical Park ofDenton County, two blockssouth of the Courthouse-on-the-Square, is an authentically his-toric Denton experience.Comprised now of the Bayless-Selby House Museum, DentonCounty African AmericanMuseum, Elm Ridge Church, and a welcome center, the parkwill soon add a windmill, theOld No. 14 Fire House, and a 4-hole outhouse (Seriously?Aren’t we glad someone invent-ed bathroom stalls?). TheBayless-Selby House Museumtakes visitors back in time toturn of the 20th centuryDenton, depicting Victorian eralife for the well-to-do family inDenton County. The gorgeoushome looks and feels as thoughits inhabitants just went out fora walk.

The African AmericanMuseum, next door to theBayless Selby House, tells a dif-

ferent story but one just asimportant to Denton’s evolutionas a richly diverse city. Artifactsin this museum allow visitors toexperience daily life ofQuakertown residents, theirturmoil during a time of segre-gation, and the positive impactsof integration. The museum ishoused in a restored home fromhistoric Quakertown. Adding tothe ambience of the HistoricalPark throughout the summergrowing season is the DentonCounty Farmers Market. Fromthe back of pickups and flatbedtrailers lining Carroll Boulevardin front of the Historical Park, local farmers ply their home-grown produce every Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday morn-ings from 7 a.m. until everythingis gone.

East on Hickory Street justthree blocks is yet another tripinto Denton’s past. The DentonFirefighters’ Museum is a must-

see into the arduous job of fight-ing fire. It showcases fascinat-ing memorabilia from the1800’s all the way to the present, including an old hose cartpulled by hand, items from a1935 ladder truck, and antiquegear. Photos and news stories ofsome of Denton’s most notablefires and the heroes that foughtthem line the walls above dis-play cases full of accoutrementsfrom breathing apparatus tofireman’s hats and helmets, toboots, jackets and protectivegear. The Firefighters Museumand the Historical Park, separat-ed by just a few walker-friendlyblocks, will be indelibly linkedonce the Old No. 14 Fire Houseis added to the Park’s collectionof Denton history. Visitors willsee in person one of the truckspictured in action at theFirefighters’ Museum.

Downtown Denton: A happening place

Courtesy photo/Wesley Clark

Denton’s Courthouse on the Square is a central attraction ina bustling downtown with eateries, shops and more.

In Denton, It’s Hip to beSquare

The Denton Convention &Visitors Bureau’s all new Hip-2-B-Square brochure hit thestreets in May with lots of excit-ing new content – content driv-en by new businesses clamber-ing to be in the heart of Denton’ship downtown district.

Denton is special. The CVBteam members know this per-haps better than anyone else, working as they do year-roundto promote Denton, often rival-ing for tourism business againstcities similar to Denton in sizeand demographics.

“The Denton product alwaysoutshines competitors when thecontest comes down to “sense ofplace,” says Kim Phillips, CVBVice President. “When clients

pit our Square against otherTexas town squares, we winmost of the time.” A testimonyto this fact, Denton will host theTexas Main Street ManagersPreservation Conference inJune 2011, all of their confer-ence activity centered down-town – the crowning tri-umphant edge that securedDenton as their host.

Denton’s appeal is the factthat it’s real. No faux downtowncopying Anywhere, USA. WhatDenton has is uniquely Denton’s– buildings and ambience. Theresult is a personality, a vibe thateven casual observers pick upon quickly. The vibe is vibrant, apulsing energy all day that does-n’t stop at night. After hoursentertainment has become oneof the biggest economic growth

areas for downtown – and thewhole district is that much morehip, that much funkier, and thatmuch more of a draw because of

it.The Industrial Street busi-

nesses have been a magnet fordiners and nightlife seekers forseveral years. Their pull is allthe stronger now with theadded action of their crossstreet: the daily-evolvingHickory Street developmentthat includes loft-style living, cool restaurants likeWeinberger’s Deli, RamanRepublic, the newly openedLove Shack, and soon-to-openMellow Mushroom. New pubslike the smoke-free HickoryStreet Lounge and Cellar 22 addtexture to the already-bursting-with-color fabric along HickoryStreet and around the Square:Abbey Inn, Beth Marie’s,Loophole, Ruby’s Diner, J&J’sPizza, Abbey Underground,Andy’s Bar, Hooligan’s, Vigne,The Labb, Banter, and on and

on and on. And the entire hipexperience is anchored by ourbeautiful courthouse – one ofthe most photographed court-houses in all of Texas and keep-er of our story in theCourthouse-on-the-SquareMuseum. Yes, Denton’s down-town life is rich fabric indeed. And visitors are drawn to it,becoming just as enamored asdo the locals. We have the realdeal downtown which is whyeveryone is discovering that inDenton, it just is “Hip-2-B-Square.
