Caving adventure Planned

~ Labor Day Weekend

The last caving adventure was so popular, Jerry Pusch has offered

to plan and organize another Cloud 9 Caving day for the members

to enjoy. The day is planned for Sunday, September 2nd.

This caving trip will include a visit to hidden areas of the Ranch

that few of hour members have had a chance to experience. The

highlight of the Trip will be a guided tour of “Frank Cave”.

Frank cave was originally discovered by a member, Frank Shores,

in the 1980’s. The cave was then placed on our Ranch Maps but

a error in printing caused the cave to accidently be left off of the

Ranch Maps. A short time ago the Cave was rediscovered as a

“New Cave” on the Ranch. Going forgotten for many years, and

unpublicized on Ranch Maps, visitors to the cave were a rarity.

When Jerry rediscovered the cave, many people started referring

to the cave as Pusch Cavern. Regardless if you want to call the

cave “Frank” by the original finder or Pusch Cavern, the fact re-

mains…..This cave is by far the most beautiful cave on the prop-

erty and very few members have yet to see that beauty. Spacing

for the guided tours is very limited. To reserve your spot, please

email [email protected] no later than August 31st. Tour

sizes will be limited to small groups. There will be 4 tour times

available. When booking your reservation please indicate the de-

sired tour time. 9AM –Lead By Jerry Pusch

9:30AM –Lead By Ed Horton

10AM-Lead By Stephanie Harrison

Wi-Fi internet access is available in all six campgrounds and the main complex, but not at every campsite in every

campground. The closer to the access point you are the stronger your signal will be. The access points are in

the following locations:

Make sure your wireless switch or setting on your device is on and look for Cloud9Net when it scans for a way to

connect.

You do not have to enter a password and most devices remember the network name after you connect so it will

automatically connect the next time you are in range. You may have to check your connection again when you

move from area to area because the signal is lost in between sites.

The signal you get can be reduced when it has to go through walls (especially metal), trees(because of the leaf

moisture), while riding your ATV or during rain. If good signal is important to you during your stay at the Ranch,

please pick your site accordingly.

If you have problems or suggestions call the office during regular hours or email me at itcoordina-

A couple of weeks ago we did a test run on a new section for the 9Lines called “Who Is That Employee?” At the July BOD meeting, one of our Directors came up with the idea (okay, it was Mag Greig) and she asked Kadye Ward to help with the interviews and writing of the articles. The rest of the BOD approved and the audience applauded. So, these two ladies went to work and the employee who agreed to be the first guinea pig was Carmen Mitchell. That’s how it all got started. Since the article ran a couple of weeks ago, the response has been overwhelming on how much members enjoyed reading it. So, we are going to take that as a YES, you want to hear more. Supervisors, Members, Directors and other employees have already suggested what employees they would like to read about, so the process will go like this. Mag Greig will choose the employee to interview, Kadye will do the interview, write the article and send it to Mag for her approval. The article will then be given to the employee for their approval, then it will be turned into the 9Lines for publication. The employee being interviewed will have the choice of whether the article is factual, hu-morous, serious, or a combination of all. Each employee article will run two weeks to give the ladies in charge a chance for more interviews and articles to be written. A big thanks to our Board of Directors who are making this happen, and to the employees who are allowing the mem-bership to get to know them better.

Each year Judy Sweetin and the group of friends & helpers she has, work very hard to bring fun to the Employee Ap-preciation Dinner that is held at the end of the season. This year is no different, with all of Judy’s hard work, a lit-tle more help is needed. Judy is asking that willing mem-bers pitch in to help provide the needed cakes for the two cake walks that will be held during the Labor Day weekend. This year in addition to the 2 cake walks, members will also be able to purchase cakes for $10 each if they do not want to participate in the cake walk. Again, the proceeds from the cake walk are for expenses incurred for employee ap-preciation.

What an interesting interview this was!!! Cole-man Smith is a quiet young man, who at first seems al-most shy. For the last two years Coleman has been a seasonal employee in the Resource Development De-partment. His first year he ran the weed-eating, but this year got “promoted” to the mowers. This Friday is Coleman’s last day as an employee this season as he returns to college on Mon-day.

The first question asked in these employee interviews is to tell a little bit about their life away from Cloud 9 Ranch. Cole-man settled in and began to tell his story. It only took a moment to realize this young man’s ambitions are much higher than his sum-mer job at Cloud 9. Cole-man is a mere 19 years old, but displays maturity way beyond his age. He’s grown up as a preacher’s boy. His father, Kevin Smith, is the Minister of Elijah Church of Christ, not far from the Ranch on V Highway. His family moved to Dora, MO when he was three. He at-tended Dora public schools. Coleman says watching his Dad all these years made him want to do a little preaching of his own. He is already filling in for area ministers from time to time; said he might further his ministry in a couple of years. High School was a good time in Coleman’s life. He was a straight A student, played baseball, member of FFA, Beta Club and other clubs. Watching Coleman talk, you could see it was an enjoyable time in his life. This interviewer couldn’t re-sist asking, “Please tell me

you got Most Handsome.” With a contagious grin, Coleman said, “Yes, Ma’am.” “Your Senior year?” I asked. “Well, I got it three years, but you don’t have to say that.” Oh, yes, I did. A smile like that after a full day of heat, grass and smudges of dirt on his face, you bet I did. Surprisingly, living in Dora all his life, Coleman had never been to Cloud 9 Ranch; heard very little about it until after graduat-ing high school in 2011. His senior year, he was ac-cepted at Freed Hardeman College in Henderson, TN. To help out with his college costs, Coleman went look-ing for a summer job. He met a man who mentioned Cloud 9 Ranch was hiring and gave him contact infor-mation. Coleman was soon hired by Harry Bonham to work in the Resource De-velopment Department the 2011 season, then off to college he went. Harry told Coleman if he wanted to come back this season, just to let him know and he had a job. Coleman maintained a 3.5 GPA his first year at Freed Harde-man, in communication/broadcasting studies. Coleman remarked, “Not sure exactly where I’m headed yet, but my pas-sion is television broadcast-ing.” He’s made several films and videos on his own.

Coleman’s family are not Ranch members so you don’t see very much of him around here after work, but says he’s been a guest on the Ranch a few times since he started working. He enjoys riding on the back-woods trails, deep into the wooded areas where there’s not as much traffic and noise. He called it “exploring.” He plans to return to work next sea-son if things work out, but he’s looking forward to one day being a Cloud 9 owner more than working as an employee. You can tell this young man is going places, that is cer-tain. When Coleman was asked if he could tell Cloud 9 members one thing, what would it be. Coleman hesitated, but it was obvious he had some-thing to say. After ex-plaining one goal of these interviews is to let the membership know what it is like to be an employee, Coleman opened up, “I would like to tell members we are good workers on the grass crew. We work hard and don’t try to make people upset, or try to cause problems. Mistakes happen, but we really try to do our job the best we can. It’s a funny feeling not knowing when some-one is coming toward me whether they are upset, mad, going to ask a ques-tion or say something nice. We get all of them during the day when we are just trying to do our job.” Our conversation turned to his private life -- he’s got a girlfriend in Kansas City, MO, just dating for now. He really enjoys singing and playing his guitar; playing with a band from Arkansas for a few years, Coleman added, “I try to be a musician and play every chance I get; I’m booked around Christmas in Lakeview, AR to do some Country and Bluegrass.”

The interview ended talking about Coleman’s faith

and his ideas for the future are bright. He is a counselor at

Bible Camps in the summer and enjoys working with chil-

dren. I asked Coleman his favorite Scripture. There was

no hesitation in his answer “Revelation 2:10.” Wow! Open

your Bible and read it. Coleman Smith is a lot more than a

good-looking preacher’s boy on a mower. This is a dedi-

cated, intelligent, quiet but strong young man with a bright

future.

Committee

On September 8th during Employee Appreciation Day, we will be

sponsoring an EMPLOYEE SHOPPING SPREE for Ranch em-

ployees and their families. Keeping in mind that many of our

employees will be laid off in September, we are going to try and

help bridge that financial gap for them with the help and generos-

ity of the membership.

This will happen in several ways.

GROCERY SHOPPING SPREE: (This event will take

the place of the Christmas in September done in previous

years.) On Employee Appreciation Day, there will be a

“grocery store” set up for the employees. Names of em-

ployees will be drawn for a chance to “shop.” They will

be able to win an amount of seconds to gather what they

want in a shopping bag. What we are asking is that

members donate non-perishable grocery items or house-

hold supplies to the EMPLOYEE STORE. DROP OFF

PLACE FOR THESE ITEMS IS THE NEW RANGER’S

STATION BUILDING by the gatehouse. When you are

arriving or leaving, drop your items off any time of the

day or night. SUGGESTION: Think of this event when

you are leaving the Ranch and have those items to carry

back home or you usually give to another camper. If

you want to donate money for us to do your shopping for

the items, drop off your cash donations at the Ranch Of-

fice Window or Gatehouse in an envelope marked EM-

PLOYEE APPRECIATION SHOPPING SPREE or make

checks payable to Cloud 9 Ranch with memo: Shopping

Spree. Our goal is to have at least $600 worth of grocer-

ies to spread around to as many employees as it lasts.

Your donation can help make it happen!!!

CRAFT HOUSE IS ALSO SPONSORING A BAG

SALE FOR EMPLOYEE’S ONLY. Volunteers at the

Craft House will provide “bag shopping” from the flea

market room for employees (the Craft House does not

include consignment items in bag sales). Employee will

pay a small fee and fill a bag with as many items as they

can stuff in it. Member generosity of slightly used and/or

new items can be a great buy for an employee. Take

these items to the Craft House in Wilder Springs before

the Labor Day weekend so they can be processed and

ready for the employees to browse.

Stayed tuned for more opportunities to honor our C9R

Employees at the end of the season on September 8th and

put the Chili Cook-off on your calendar.

The Rest of the Story

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. PRESIDENT

Last Saturday our Board President turned 50 years

old. Looking back over the years of Cloud 9 Presi-

dents, he’s probably the youngest of the bunch. At

his birthday party at the Big Top, he was sent “Over

the Hill” in a big way. Becky and their children wanted a special day for Kevin, and they got

it. Over 100 guests came to enjoy BBQ, and they were entertained by Ranch employees and

members. Laughter was all-around; a happy atmosphere for everyone. It was a perfect party

for Kevin, who thrives on watching everyone enjoy “his” Ranch. Kevin Willis is in his third

year as Director of Cloud 9, and his second year as Board Presi-

dent. But in his wildest dreams he never

thought he would be the President of a large

corporation. Kevin admits he still can’t figure

out why that happened, but it did and he’s do-

ing the best he can for the interest of Cloud 9

employees and owners. This is a good time to

understand a little more about who Kevin

Willis really is. Born August 18, 1962, in Marshfield, MO, in the Wal-

Mart parking lot – well, not exactly. Prior to the parking lot, a small

medical clinic was located there.

Help Keep the Trails Clean! Carry Out What You Carry In!

Please Ride Responsibly!

It is Your responsibility to know!

Cloud 9 Ranch is a very beautiful place to ride ATV’s, camp, and fish. With nearly 6500 acres, there is something for everyone to do at Cloud 9 Ranch. Ranch members are en-couraged to ride the trails & explore the natural beauty that our Ranch encompasses. With that task also comes the responsibility of the member to know where you are on the property. The RRC has spent a great amount if time & ef-fort in producing C9R Trail maps. The maps are a tool that every member should have readily available as they explore the Ranch property. For your convenience the maps are for sale in the Trading Post. As you enjoy your time at Cloud 9 Ranch, be aware that private landowners share fence lines with the Ranch. Both Ranch Management and these Private Owners want you, as members, to be aware that cutting fences and the destruction of private property is against the law. Ranch Members who trespass onto pri-vately owned land can be prosecuted. Surrounding prop-erty owners have reported to Ranch Officials that fire rings have been built, trash (beer cans) have been left and fences have been cut by Cloud 9 Members. One landowner has also reported that since the spring of this year, nearly 2 miles of ATV trails have been blazed on their privately held property. As members, know where you are on the Ranch property, look for purple marking paint to identify property lines and avoid all areas that are marked with “NO TRESS-PASSING” signs. The Ranch has been blessed with neighbors that respect our private area, let’s return the fa-vor by respecting the rights of the surrounding property owners as well.

was hired as General Manager. Coy has worked

with SCORE over the last few years and several of

their suggestions have been his main priorities that

have helped the corporation in many ways. One of

the first suggestions SCORE made was to hire two

managers, one with a business background and the

other with an operational background. When Coy

was hired, he was given both tasks and for over two

years has filled the shoes of both a General Manager

and a Ranch Manager. It was recently decided that

Cloud 9 Ranch Club, Inc., should put some changes

into motion. Managing one of the largest corpora-

tions in Ozark County is better served by hiring an-

other individual to form a two-manager team to run

all aspects of Ranch business with both managers

answering to the Board of Directors. It just came

down to the hard realization that SCORE is right,

and asking one individual to wear so many hats and

expect perfection in job performance is an unrealistic

expectation to put on a person as dedicated and com-

mitted as Coy Jackson has been since the day he ac-

cepted the position as General Manager. Because

this is an employment matter, it has been discussed

in executive session meetings. To put those wheels

in motion, on July 21, 2012, in executive session, a

motion was made and adopted “to move the process

forward to divide the business and operational re-

sponsibilities between two executive positions as

SCORE recommended.” Over the next few months,

the BOD will be working with Coy and SCORE to

designate the duties for a two-manager system. The

job descriptions for both positions are being designed

to get the maximum benefit for management, super-

visors and employees to work more efficiently with

better understanding of respective chains of com-

mand and what their duties will be. Our goal is to

have this management structure in place by 2013,

and we can expect even greater advances in our cor-

poration. The Cloud 9 Ranch Directors want to em-

phasize that this change is a positive one for all in-

volved. The Cloud 9 Ranch Board of Directors is

dedicated to giving the corporation and its owners/

members every opportunity to succeed and move

forward. This will take commitment and patience

from everyone as we work toward this goal.

From the BOD

The doctor who delivered Kevin said he delivered two

bulls in one day – his own bull calf that morning &

Kevin that night. Kevin grew up a Missouri country

boy, being the middle child of a steel worker. Kevin’s

first job was Press Operator at the plant his Dad

worked, Marshfield Steel (now Hutchens Industries);

over the years receiving promotions, he’s now a Su-

pervisor. Kevin claims 1983 was his best year; he

found a job and married his best friend & love of his

life, Becky. It was a great year; working at the same

plant for almost 30 years & having the same wife for

as many years is proof. He is a devoted man to his

job, husband to Becky, Daddy to two girls & Papaw

Buck to two grandchildren, as well as his C9R Board

responsibilities. How did Kevin find Cloud 9 Ranch?

The way many did; invited by friends. Becky admits

she didn’t feel the love being in a 17 ft. rental, so they

packed up & left at 6:00 a.m. the next morning. But

the lure of Cloud 9 didn’t vanish. They came back,

took a tour with Salesman Don Moreland who offered

a $200 down, monthly payment plan. In 2004, they

signed on the dotted line. Soon they were offered a

one-time payment of $1,000, & took it. That first year

the Willis family (bringing their own camper) enjoyed

family camping and rode the trails. Kevin and Becky

soon recognized the need for volunteers and began

helping wherever there was a need. Every trip to

Cloud 9 meant some volunteer time was on their

schedule. Kevin became an officer of the RRC, but

by 2009 he was encouraged to campaign for a Direc-

tor position. He resigned as RRC Co-Chairman and

was elected to the

Board of Directors in

June 2010. As Vice-

President under Don

Scott, when Don re-

signed, Kevin filled the

top position. The 2012-

2013 Directors re-

elected Kevin as Presi-

dent. Kevin and Becky Willis are what Cloud 9 is all

about. Their commitment to the employees and com-

mittees is unsurpassed. Kevin is a quiet man, but his

actions speak volumes about dedication and interest in

how Cloud 9 is perceived from every aspect. Becky

will be the first to tell you the love people showed

Kevin at his party was deeply appreciated and at times

overwhelming to him. Kevin says he has two fami-

lies; one at home and one at his “little piece of

heaven” Cloud 9 Ranch. If you ever hear Kevin pray,

he usually ends with “And thank you, Sir, for listen-

ing.” Kevin Willis is a humble country boy with a

heart of gold, the most genuine family man you’ll ever

meet, and Cloud 9 is fortunate to have him.
