Dear Student

Thank you for taking the (me to pick up our prospectus andwe hope that our new courses for next year will interest andinspire you.

This is an exci(ng (me for Hyde 6th form as we will beoffering addi(onal specialist technology courses as part of aunique STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)package. You will be supported throughout your studies notonly by 6th form staff but also by the ManchesterMetropolitan University outreach team.

Students who choose to follow our specialised STEMpathway will have the opportunity to apply their knowledgeand skills through involvement in one of several exci(ngprojects we are running.

As part of a team, students will be able to choose from arange of exci(ng projects that will be entered for na(onalcompe((ons. These include Race Car Design, 3D Fashion andArcade Game Construc(on.

Our widely recognised Games Design course gets bigger bythe year and places are always limited so please check outthe games design website www.hccgamedev.co.uk forup-to-date news.

We will s(ll be offering a range of tradi(onal A-levelsand voca(onal courses to suit most careers aspira(onsand course informa(on is available on each subject onour website.

What will I study? Sociology is the study of human society.During this course you will have the opportunity to study topicssuch as, social class, the power of the media, religion, educa1on,the role of the family, the social distribu1on of illness, powerand poli1cs.

Assessment: Exam.

Career Pathways: Social Work, Educa1on, Research, Law, Youthand Community Work.

What will I study? Psychology is the Science of mind andbehaviour and on this course you will gain an understanding ofwhy humans think and behave in the ways they do. The courseis designed to assist you in acquiring the knowledge and skillsnecessary to prepare you for entrance to university.

Assessment: Exam.

Career Pathways: Educa1onal Psychology, Clinical Psychology,Police Work, Marke1ng/Adver1sing, Nursing, Teaching, SocialWork, Counselling, Human Resources Management and SpeechTherapy.

What will I study? Business studies is a dynamic subject whichblends a number of specialist fields such as marke1ng, humanresources, accoun1ng and financial opera1ons managementwhich make up a course that is highly relevant to the modernworld.

Assessment: 4 mandatory units at A-level internally marked andexternally moderated comprising of coursework por0olio andcontrolled assignment.

What will I study? This is a popular and useful subject.Technology is changing and much more of the world is nowreliant on Informa1on and Communica1on Technology tofunc1on effec1vely. This course is designed to help you developan understanding of how ICT can be used in society,organisa1ons and the implica1ons of its use.

Assessment: 60% examina1on and 40% Prac1cal StructuredTasks.

Career Pathways: Computer Engineering, So!wareDevelopment, Web Design, 3D Graphics, Computer Anima1on,and Project Management.

AS/A ICT

What will I study? You will learn how to analyse and deconstructa variety of media texts, research target audiences andunderstand how the media industry works, including poten1alcareer pathways. You will also gain prac1cal experience usingcamera equipment and edi1ng so!ware to create your ownproduc1on.

Assessment: 100% coursework.

Career Pathways: Further study at Degree or HND level. Workingin the Television or Film Industry, Journalism, Marke1ng and PR.

AS/A MediaCommunication & Production

What will I study? If you have a passion for reading and wouldlike to expand your knowledge of poetry, novels and plays, thisis the perfect course for you. You will study an exci1ng variety oftexts, writers and genres from a range of historical periods..

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma inMusic Performance

What will I study? You will further your knowledge of algebraand trigonometry and will meet a new branch of Mathema1cscalled calculus. You will study separate units in mechanics andsta1s1cs which will support your study in a wide range of othersubjects. The analy1cal and problem solving skills you developthrough a study of Mathema1cs will stand you in good stead fora wide variety of further study.

Assessment: Exams.

What will I study? Computer and Video Game Design andproduc1on taught by staff with industry experience, alongsideindustry speakers from some of the biggest global gamecompanies.

A prac1ce-based course giving the opportunity to buildcomputer and video games on a variety of pla0orms from PC tomobile devices.

Year 1: takes you through the basic art and design process andtechnical fundamentals of programming as well as looking intothe use of sound and music. You will learn problem-solving usingdesign theory through prac1ce, look into the emergent use ofentertainment technologies and cover the fundamentals of 2Dand 3D digital graphics. More theore1cal modules cover thehistorical and social issues surrounding crea1ve media, andproject management skills are embedded across severalmodules.

Year 2: core modules build on the design, planning andprototyping of a game and agile development produc1on skills,as well as covering narra1ve technologies. Elec1ve modulesallow you to further specialise in the other areas covered in thefirst year, such as 2D/3D character and environment art andgraphics, tools and engine programming or digital assetmanagement.

Extra a�er-school classes

During the course students are pushed towards designing agame for the iPodTM/iPhoneTM/iPadTM as a team, releasing thegame onto the AppStoreTM and even ge3ng a developer 1tlebefore leaving college.

What will I study? This course will prepare you for working inthe design industry and give you the compe11ve edge you needto get into University.

The D&T Product Design 3D course will help you develop anumber of skills and knowledge of how to assemble data andassess it.

At AS level candidates developan understanding of a broadrange of materials, withemphasis on the life cycle ofproducts, manufacture andfinal disposal. Thisspecifica1on also considers thebroader issues for the designerincluding the environmentalsustainability of products andconsumer safety:

Unit 1: (PROD1) Materials,Components and Applica1on.

Unit 2: (PROD2) LearningThrough Designing and Making.

A2 outline:

At A2, the specifica1on offers candidates the opportunity tofurther develop the knowledge and prac1cal skills from AS.Candidates will con1nue to develop a body of courseworkalongside an understanding of the processes and procedures ofcommercial produc1on and manufacture:

Unit 3: (PROD3) Design and Manufacture.

Unit 4: (PROD4) Design and Making Prac1ce.

Career Pathways: 3D design, Product or Automo1veDesign, CAD Design, Engineering, Architecture, Teaching,Manufacturing, and Adver1sing to name but a few.

What will I study? This course is most suitable for those thathave followed the separate sciences at GCSE and have achieveda grade B or higher in Biology. You should have goodorganisa1onal skills and a good grasp of Mathema1cs andEnglish to access the curriculum fully.

In the first year you’ll study three main topics: ‘Cells, exchangeand transport’ and ‘molecules, biodiversity & health’, plus aprac1cal assignment which is designed to sharpen yourinves1ga1ve skills.

Year two helps you build on that firm founda1on and, like yearone, has two academic topics plus a prac1cal assignment. Theacademic topics are ‘Communica1on, homeostasis and energy’and ‘control genomes and environment’. The prac1calassignment involves inves1ga1ng a different area of Biology.

Assessment: Exam/Inves1ga1ve and prac1cal skills.

Career Pathways: Biology is a great choice of subject for thosewho would like a career in health and clinical professions, suchas Sports Science, Physiotherapy, Den1stry, Medicine, VeterinaryScience, Radiology, Pharmacy, Nursing, Optometry, Zoology,Marine Biology or Forensic Science.

What will I study? An exci1ng and dynamic analysis of humaninterac1on with the planet in the 21st Century. This issues-basedcourse will equip you to address some cri1cal issues andproblems in the world such as destruc1on of naturalenvironments, people and hazards, global poverty, and climatechange. The focus moves from local to global issues and iscomplemented by a programme of residen1al fieldwork.

Assessment: Modular exams (100%) held in January and June.

Career Pathways: Geography is good for a career in Journalism,Media, Meteorology, Accountancy, Planning Teaching, Leisureand Tourism, Environmental or Earth Sciences, and OutdoorEduca1on.

AS/A Geography – Edexcel

What will I study? This course covers the key areas that the foodindustry has to consider including: quality, processing, packaging& labelling, health & safety, nutri1onal value, and contribu1onto dietary control and sustained good health.

Assessment: Por0olio (30% of total qualifica1on), design andtechnology in prac1ce (20% of total A-level). 1.5-hour wri2enexam. Food products, nutri1on and product development (20%of total A-level), 2-hour wri2en exam. Commercial design project(30% of total A-level).

Career Pathways: By studying catering you are opening a diverserange of career and further educa1on opportuni1es whichinclude: Nursing, Die11an, Hospitality & Catering, Child-relatedCare courses, Educa1on, Product Development in the foodindustries, Food Technician and Retail Management.

What will I study? Appliedexercise physiology, health,exercise and fitness, nutrician,pulmonary and cardiacfunc1on, analysis of movementin specified spor1ng ac1ons,sill acquisi1on, principles oftraining, fitness tes1ngand training methods, methodsof coaching, repara1on andtraining, sports supplementsand psychological aspects thatop1mise performance.

Assessment: Year 1 (2-hour exam worth 30% of overall grade).Analysis and evalua1on of your physical ac1vity as a performerworth 20% of your overall grade. Year 2 (2-hour exam worth 30%of your overall grade).

Career Pathways: This course can be a stepping stone to avariety of careers, e.g. Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy, Coaching,Sports Development Officer, Teacher and Sports ScienceCourses.

AS/A Level Physical Education

What will I study? This course is suitable for students who haveachieved at least a grade B in GCSE Core and Addi1onal Science.Grade B or be2er in GCSE Mathema1cs is also required due tothe very high level mathema1cal content involved.

Physics at AS and Advanced GCE is a course which explores someof the biggest and most interes1ng ques1ons that humans canask.

Assessment: Exam/Inves1ga1ve and prac1cal skills.

Career Pathways: A-Level Physics can lead onto a huge variety ofdifferent pathways. It leads onto degrees in Physics &Engineering, as well as being a valuable tool for those studyingother Sciences & Mathema1cs.

Numerous career paths can follow on from a Physicsbackground, some directly linked to Physics, and many notdirectly linked such as Banking, Accountancy and the FinancialServices sector.

AS/A Physics

What will I study? This course is suitable for students who haveachieved at least a grade B in Addi1onal Science or GCSEChemistry.

If you like logical problems, and thinking hard – really using yourbrain – then Chemistry is for you. If you want to know whatmakes up the world around you, you are a natural chemist. Thesyllabus builds on the concepts of How Science Works.

If you study A level Chemistry then you should be able to ask'Why?' and get a good answer. You will find AS Chemistryexplains chemical ideas mostly using words, while A2 Chemistry

explains chemical ideas usingMaths, while broadening thetopics studied.

Assessment:Exam/Inves1ga1ve andprac1cal skills.

Career Pathways: AS or A-levelChemistry is par1cularlyimportant if you want to studyMedicine, Veterinary Science,Den1stry or Biochemistry atuniversity.
