Students  organize  the  Fair  as  part  of  a  Labor  Studies  internship.  Labor  Studies  has  been  a  major  at  CSUDH  for  over  30  years,  with  courses  in  labor  history,  labor  law,  cultural  representations  of  labor,  and  the  relationship  of  race,  gender,  ethnicity,  and  class  struggles.    Organizing  the  fair  gives  Labor  Studies  students  a  hands-‐on  experience  in  teamwork,  one-‐on-‐one  organizing,  budgeting,  using  creativity  and  culture  to  organize,  and  firsthand  contact  with  groups  involved  in  social  change  and  empowerment.

This  year’s  fair  is  dedicated  to  Marilyn  Brady,  one  of  our  club’s  advisors.  Marilyn  was  part  of  our  Labor  Studies  family.  She  retired  in  December,  and  passed  away  in  March.  We  miss  her  terribly.

What  is  the  purpose  of  the  Fair?  Scott  Hill,  a  DH  Labor  Studies  graduate,  proposed  the  Fair  as  a  way  to  publicize  our  major  and  connect  the  department’s  goals  to  the  CSUDH  mission.  The  50  plus  labor  and  social  justice  groups  who  come  to  our  campus  contribute  to  our  understanding  of  diversity,  a  sustainable  environment,  and  provide  engagement  with  the  surrounding  communities.  They  offer  students  a  pathway  to  jobs  and  internships,  and  nurture  a  commitment  to  justice  and  social  responsibility.  We  reach  out  to  high  school  students  and  community  college  students,  many  from  underrepresented  groups,  to  invite  them  to  interact  with  social  justice  organizations  and  to  encourage  them  to  continue  their  studies.

As  a  society  we  are  fighting  for  the  right  to  make  and  win  our  demands.  The  so-‐called  austerity  philosophy  tries  to  make  social  justice  illegitimate,  but  we  can  combine  to  make  our  voices  heard.    We  see  culture,  art,  music,  and  dance  as  part  of  political  expression,  joining  our  guest  speakers,  and  workshops  to  make  this  a  memorable  day.  The  Fair  is  also  a  reminder  of  the  upcoming  May  1st,  International  Workers  Day,  commemorating  the  massacre  of  workers  in  1886  in  Chicago,  when  anarchists  were  framed  on  charges  of  terrorism  after  a  mass  demonstration  for  the  eight  hour  day.  This  year  there  will  be  May  1st  events  throughout  the  world,  including  here  in  Los  Angeles.  For  information  about  Labor  Studies,  see  http://dhlaborstudies.org  or  call  us  at  310-‐243-‐3640
