Outline
5G-IA Objectives
06/02/2018 3
• 5G-IA: The voice of European for future 5G ecosystems– 70+ members (industry, research, SMEs, associations)– Board: Nokia (Chair), SES (Vice-Chair), Orange, Thales,
Ericsson, Telecom Italia Mobile, Huawei, Telenor, Nextworks, Interinnov, CTTC
• Objectives– Ensure a clear European voice on 5G around the world. – Provide European leadership for the development,
deployment and evolution of 5G– Drive the digital transformation through leverage and
development of 5G technology
5G-IA Objectives

• Objectives (cont’d)– Facilitate convergence of telecommunications (mobile, fixed,
satellite, ...) and vertical industry sectors (“verticals”) to create a Europe wide 5G ecosystem.
– Ensure the EU’s support/enforcement of the required policies and regulations to embrace 5G in the various vertical sectors in Europe
– Steer the European research agenda and programmeimplementation in the area of 5G and beyond to maximize the impact, coordination and exploitation of results
– Provide the business dimension on top of the technical work from European research.
– Promote the availability of radio spectrum, as well as a holistic standardization roadmap with the aim of reaching a globally harmonized and interoperable 5G communications standard

• With 5G, networks will be transformed into intelligent orchestration platforms
5G and wholesale business models

• By cementing strong relationships between vendors, operators, and verticals, 5G will open the field to new business value propositions– Sustainability is key!
5G and wholesale business models
06/02/2018 10
• Business models affecting 5G are still not fully clear (only 5G eMBB will most likely have a business model continuity with 4G)
• 5G may use wholesale business models to serve vertical industries:– MNOs may rent/sell slices to vertical oriented MVNOs (B2B)
to aggregate/orchestrate slices to offer a particular serviceE.g., a car manufacturer may become such an entity to provide
connected/autonomous driving to their cars.– Vertical industries are usually global players and will need
pan european (or even wider) scale, so wholesale models with slice aggregation may be a solution.
• This concept is aligned with the workshop rationale of “wholesale only” ultrabroadband providers for long term investors
5G and wholesale business models
06/02/2018 11
• Some days ago, the press unveiled that Trump’s administration was studying the possibility of a 5G National wholesale network to tackle chinese vendors security threats.
• In this model, operators would act as MVNOs and rent 5G infrastructure from US Administration, a perfect wholesale model!
