The meeting was held in conjunction with the International Society of Heart Research-Australasian Section and attracted both local and international dele- gates from diverse backgrounds including basic, clinical and population health science. During the three days of the conference, over 230 scientific presentations were delivered covering a broad range of topics includ- ing basic mechanisms in cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiovascular imaging, clinical cardiology & surgery, congenital heart disease, heart failure & hyper- tension, coronary heart disease, and multidisciplinary cardiovascular health care. The theme of the meeting was ‘Cardiology in an era of cost constraint’ and many speakers addressed this topic in their presentations. In the planning of this meeting, the Organising Com- mittee proposed to present key symposium from the conference as a mini-symposium in the Heart, Lung and Circulation Journal. While there were many excel- lent presentations from the topics listed above, it was elected to focus on four symposia, providing a comprehen- sive overview of these selected symposia. The symposia include presentations on basic science (Physiology & Pathology of Redox Signalling in the Heart), clinical sci- ence (Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction), population health science (Indigenous Vascular Health) and cost- effectiveness issues (Health Care Crisis). In this issue of the Journal, the basic and clinical science session will be E-mail address: [email protected] (J.F. Reactive oxygen species play an important role in the regulation of a number of cardiovascular processes and several of these were discussed in the ‘Physiology and Pathology of Redox Signalling in the Heart’ session. Livia Hool discussed the physiological role of cellular redox state in influencing L-type calcium channel function and thus car- diomyocyte excitability and contractility. Rebecca Ritchie focussed on the pathological role of oxidative stress in the development of myocardial complications from insulin resistance. From the ‘Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction’ session, John Beltrame, Filippo Crea and Paolo Camici provided a comprehensive overview of this important complex area. This included discussions on methods of evaluating the coronary microvasculature, a clinical classification of disorders involving coronary microvascular dysfunction, their underlying mechanisms and potential therapies. Future developments in the understanding of these con- ditions will provide significant improvements in the treatment of coronary heart disease. Finally, on behalf of the Adelaide Organising Commit- tee of the 56th CSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting we wish to thank all those who assisted in the preparation of the meeting, the international and local speakers, and most importantly attendees who made the meeting a great suc- cess. We dedicate this mini-symposium to these people and hope it will further advance knowledge amongst our colleagues.
