INTRODUCTIONThe VAREC 5000/5010 Series FlameArresters are used in gas pipingsystems or on petroleum storage tankroofs or digester covers. They aredesigned to stop the propagation offlame (Group “D” gases) from externalsources and can be mounted up to 15feet upstream of the ignition source inaccordance with UL Approval; or 10pipe diameters in accordance with FMapproval requirements.

5000 Series is for vertical installation.5010 Series is for horizontal or verticalinstallation.

OPERATIONVAREC 5000/5010 Series FlameArresters stop the propagation of aflame by absorbing and dissipating heatthrough the surface area of the banksheets. Ignited vapor attempting to passthrough the arrester is forced throughsmall passages within the bankassembly. Heat is absorbed, loweringthe temperature of the gas below itsignition point and quenching the flame.

DESIGN FEATURESThe net free area through all 5000 and5010 Series Flame Arrester banks isthree to four times the unit pipe size.The result is increased flow capacitywith minimal pressure drop. The largesurface area of the bank also improvesheat dissipation.

VAREC 5000/5010 Series FlameArresters are designed with a uniqueextensible aluminum bank frame (seephoto on page 3). The corrugatedsheets can be individually inspected androutinely cleaned without removal fromthe frame. Should the bank assemblyrequire replacement, it slides easily outof the arrester, therefore, it is notnecessary to jack apart the endhousings or connecting piping.

Additionally, the unitized housing doesnot require support for proper bankalignment during maintenance as maybe necessary with spiral bank arresters.This is especially useful in applicationswhere frequent inspection and cleaningis anticipated.

The 5010 Series is designed with an“off-set” housing, providing anadvantage over symmetrical housingsand spiral bank designs. Generally, flowcapacity is not affected by condensateaccumulation, even when installed inhorizontal piping. By design, the bank ispositioned above any area wherecondensate would accumulate.Each unit is fitted with a 1/2” NPT drain

plug at the low point, providing aconvenient means for routine draining.

A Varec Biogas Drip Trap should bespecified for field installation at thisconnection to provide for safe removalof condensate.
