The 5th Commandment

Thou Shall Not Kill

The 5th Commandment• Teaches us that all life is sacred• Every human life involves the creative action

of God and is in a special relationship with God

• We are called to respect our own lives and the lives of others ALWAYS!!

The 5th Commandment• We cannot take away another person’s dignity• We are called to show special respect and care

for people whose lives are made harder by sickness or handicaps

• A human life is valuable even if it is weak, in pain or old

• The value of life is not decided by someone’s “usefulness”

The 5th Commandment• This commandment calls us to appreciate our

own life and take care of our health• What are some of the ways we abuse our

bodies???

The 5th Commandment• The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)

teaches us that we are to avoid every kind of excess that will damage our health and life.

• We must not abuse food, alcohol, tobacco or medicine, and we must not use illegal drugs

The 5th Commandment• In all that we do, we are called to remember

that all life comes from God and belongs to God. Our lives have been entrusted to us for safekeeping, not given to us to dispose of as we please.

• Every choice we make should show that we honour the trust that God has given us.
