Welcome…..

This is the 20th year for THE PIC BULL SALE, the 20th time that we have organized, selected and

assembled a group of performance evaluated bulls, all the data, all the predictions, yes, the 20th time.

It has only happened ever at Carson’s/Listowel and the only auctioneer, DAVID CARSON!

We have seen changes over the years, breeds, types, colours and more, while one thing has been con-

stant, the detailed data that tells us the story, although there have been additional traits added to these

evaluations, the bottom line, THE WHOLE STORY is there for you to make your bull buying

decisions.

BIO has now for 20 years compiled the data on the PIC BULLS, detailed data on all the economi-

cally important traits, now lets think about this, 20 years of data collection. Not one year but 20, the

thousands of pieces of information that has been collected and computed and delivered to producers

for their review and selection. With each year, the data becomes more predictable, and now with 20

years of this, ROCK SOLID INFORMATION!

This years offering of bulls, opportunity for you to upgrade, we have selected bulls that offer a whole

bunch of opportunity to improve your program economically, and this at the most important time I

have ever experienced in our Ontario Beef Industry.

Record high calf prices, predictable record high finish prices, predictions of 3-4-5 years of continued

positives in front of us, and if the world political climate remains calm, we could be experiencing a

whole new market environment.

With this, current prices for the retired cows and bulls are as we have not experienced for years, not

that I remember, lots of 1000 dollar cows and 1500 dollar bulls, and the demand for grind beef seems

endless at the moment.

There is no better time to upgrade your genetics, add pounds to your calf crop, capitalize on high calf

prices, more pounds, more dollars and seems a bunch more dollars.

The offering in 20th edition of THE PIC BULL SALE offers you opportunity to add pounds, to add

dollars!

Well developed, big and stout, selected for predictable economically important traits, bred and raised

by producers that have done it many times before.

THEY’LL BREED A BUNCH, for the 20th time, THE PIC BULL SALE!

The BULL GUY / JACK MCCOUBREY

BENNVILLE FARM - Lot 1 to 7

Bennville Farm would like to congratulate the PIC committee for 20 years of continued success with this Sale. Thanks to the

foresight of a group of committed breeders, who believed in the value of bull testing as an important tool of herd improvement, this sale has been a success for many years.

Collecting and comparing animal data and having that data available to the general industry is, in our opinion, one of the most important tools to bettering the quality of our herds. Breed organizations who have rigorously worked with breed data and visual judging scores , have established themselves as the TOP, not only nationally but internationally ( great examples are Canadian Holsteins or in the horse industry the Hannoverians in Germany). Too bad that our cattle industry, our breed asso-ciations and our governments don't see the need of more funding and stricter rules to enhance breed improvement.

Having said that, we at Bennville are constantly aiming to improve our herd . BIO numbers as well as breed EPD's are not always the guarantee of success, but they are most certainly important tools for us to use.

Again please find the current average EPD's for the Limousin breed below for you to compare and rank our bulls accordingly. Thanks to the PIC committee as well as to Jack Mc Coubrey and the BIO staff at Guelph for their continued support and for letting us be part of this Sale. Also thanks to you, our customer, for your support to our program.

Take a look at this powerful black bull. As you can see from the dam photo, she put a lot into this bull and he will put a lot into your herd! This

bull will help produce fast growing calves that have great weaning and yearling growth at 97% and 99% ratings. Look at his average daily gain at 4.95 then take a look at his ribeye score, it is phenomenal! His Igenity DNA profile shows that he has tenderness to go along with all of this growth. Bob Gregson is now the proud owner of his dam where she will continue to put her all into producing feed efficient and fast finishing calves. Marywood BLK Thunder 9X has a tremendous BIO$ score meaning that his overall genetic evaluations combine to give him a high economic index. We look at the PIC Sale as a highlight of the Bull Sales in Ontario each year. It is not only an opportunity for our program to consign our best bulls each year, but this sale also provides access to some of the very best genetics available in each breed. Jack works hard each year selecting quality bulls with a balance of performance and carcass data.

We are proud to say we have purchased bulls for the last 2 years in the PIC sale, that have been new genetics for our program and that meet our selection goals for performance and carcass traits. The Super-man 13W bull we purchased two years ago has not disappointed us. The Marywood herd also has Super-man calves on the ground and he is running with their cows right now. Our first and second crop of heifers and bulls calves out of Superman to date, are plain good, with performance and temperament that is sec-ond to none. We have 2 red Superman sons in this sale.

We are also consigning a blaze face black bull in the sale that was our pick of our black male calves last year from the first day he hit the ground. As usual we have a bull in the sale out of each of our old reliable herd sires Fire Power 42N and Marywood Manhattan 44P. They are both performance bulls with carcass traits they will pass on and definitely add maternal as they are out of 2 of our very best cows.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Dave, Jack or Josh.

The Marywood Manhattan 44P bull has been the anchor of our red program for any years. The Faye cow produces either her-self or one her daughters a bull that ends up at the PIC sale every year. Ralph McIntosh purchased a full brother to 74X last year. With an ADG of 4.5 pounds per day, you can be assured that will translate into adding performance to a calf crop. This red bull is the performance plus bull of this years group boosting 4.6 pounds per day gain and WPDA of 4.2 in one attrac-tive package. This is the first crop of calves from the Superman bull we purchased in the PIC Sale 2 years ago. We like the first crop of calves for their performance, muscling, length, temperament and the quality of the both bulls and heifers. The dam of this lad is a Leachman Lucky Buck female that is one of top cows in the herd and his sister produced a our best heifer calf last year. 78X’s sire and dam are both black so you assured 78X is a red non-diluter. Bilodeau 007 represents an opportunity to sample foundation genetics directly from arguably the No. 1 Angus program in the world. His dam boasts a weaning ratio of 114 on 6 calves and, at 15 years of age, continues to be a rock-solid profit center at Schaff Angus Valley. She has 33 daughters in production, 20 of which remain at the core of the SAV cowherd. One of those daughters recently produced the $275,000 high selling bull at the 2011 SAV sale. His sire, Pioneer, is exceeding all expecta-tions, positioning him to be the next step beyond his legendary Pathfinder Sire. He combines modest birth weight with excep-tional performance, length and balance. If you’re looking for longevity, fertility, and a perfect balance between performance and efficiency be sure not to miss Bilodeau 007 on sale day.

Toll free 1 (855) BIO-BEEF (855 246-2333) or email at [email protected] or www.biobeef.com

Designed with you in mind, bioTrack will work with high speed or dial up Internet access. Information is stored in grid format, allowing you to view all your animals on one screen. The grid is customizable in two ways. First, you decide which columns of data to view, and multiple layouts can be saved for different purposes, effectively creating your own reports. Second, columns of data can be sorted (by cow age, weaning index, etc) to allow for easy comparison and effective decision-making. Data is highly secure and routinely backed up, taking away the worry of using your home computer system. Best of all, you decide how bioTrack can best help you, from management to genetics, on your farm and beyond.

Specifications:

BioTrack allows collection of performance data on an animal throughout its life. Information flow across seed stock, cow calf, feedlot and packing sectors will allow you to make better business decisions related to breeding stock and managing cattle in feedlots. Always accessible and always secure, we make information management easy and relevant!

Benefits:

BioTrack is an online herd management and record keeping system that offers you convenience, simplicity and security. All herd information (pedigree, health records, genetic evaluations, carcass characteristics, animal movements, sales, purchases) can be entered and saved to the BIO database through the Internet. BioTrack automatically uploads to CCIA, performing age verification when an RFID number and birth date are entered. The data entered can be used to obtain within herd indexes as well as across breed genetic evaluations, for purebred and commercial animals. With the online system, the data is available to you from any computer that has Internet access, any time.

Move your data from calving books and clipboards to bioTrack, dynamic herd management software that acts as a vehicle for genetic evaluation. Other programs let you manage data on your farm but bioTrack lets you see beyond your farm gate and connect with other producers. This allows you to make better business decisions that affect your bottom line.

What is a BIO ABC (Across Breed Comparison)?

Estimated Progeny Differences (EPD) are selection tools that provides estimates of the genetic value of an animal as a par-ent. When comparing two animals of the same breed, the difference between their EPD predicts the difference in perform-ance of their respective offspring.

To compare animals of different breeds, or crossbred animals with multiple breeds in their pedigree, producers can use Across Breed Comparisons (ABCs). ABCs are breed-adjusted EPDs. With ABCs, one breed can be compared to an-other, a purebred can be compared to percentage cattle and percentage cattle can be compared, regardless of their breed composition.

ABCs are calculated from performance data and pedigrees. Performance data includes weights and measures gathered while on test with BIO, as well as herd information collected from the producer. Pedigree includes parents, grandparents, siblings and offspring.

Using ABCs in a Breeding Program: BIO ABCs are calculated using a fixed base, which is the starting point for comparing animals. The fixed base is as follows:

For each trait, you can consider the fixed base the average performance. For example, calving ease is the likelihood of requiring assistance at calving for first calf heifers. A positive ABC for calving ease means the calf is less likely to require assistance at calving, while a negative number means the calf is more likely to require assistance.

To make using ABCs easier, BIO calculates percentile ranking for all traits. With percentile rankings, 100 is the best possi-ble rank. For an animal that ranks 95 for a trait, they are in the 95th percentile or top 5% for that trait. Rankings are calcu-lated across all breeds, and calculated within breed for purebred animals. Rankings are also calculated for the BIO$ Index.

The BIO$ Selection Index: Using ABCs to pick your herd sire means you are making an informed decision. But considering all the ABCs at one time can be overwhelming. An easier way to sort out prospective sires is to use the BIO$ Index, calculated for all animals offi-cially evaluated by BIO. The BIO$ Index is a biological economic index calculated using the ABCs of the evaluated bulls and calculating the predicted profit based on a production system with a defined market for offspring. The BIO$ Index is aimed at efficient lean meat production for a market focused on AA carcasses between 775 and 900 lbs. The index pre-dicts the amount of increased return a producer should expect from a particular bull over 2 calving seasons (the average of the index is $2000).

The BIO$ index can be used to identify top prospects as sires. Use it to pick out the best bulls being offered, but then take a closer look at individual traits that are important to your operation. Here’s an example of 2 bulls with genetic evaluation on all traits and the rank for BIO$:

Both bulls have very high index values, but they vary a lot between the traits. Bull A has superior calving ease and small birth weights, which may be better suited to smaller framed cows and heifers. Bull B would be better suited to larger frame cows and is more likely to produce leaner carcasses.
