WELCOMEOnbehalfofallthemembersoftheUnionofBlackEpiscopaliansthroughouttheglobe,we,theplanningteamandUBEBoardbidyouwelcome.Wegatherforthis48thAnnualBusinessMeetingandConferencetofilloursoulsandmindsforthejourneythatliesaheadofeachofusinthecomingyear.AswegathertogetherhereintheCityofNewOrleanswecometogethersurroundedbyagreatcloudofwitnessesunitedonetoanotherinthestreamofbaptism.Aswecometogetheratthegreatwelcomingtable,wefeastonthemannafromheaven,gainstrength,courage,andwisdomtopressontowardtheprizeofthehighcallingofGodinChristJesus,andtotakeourpartinGod'stransformingandreconcilingwork.LetuspausetorememberwhoweareandwhoseweareandinvitetheHolySpirittojoinwithus,toopenourmindsandheartstothegiftsGodwantstobestowuponeachofus.

AbouttheUnionofBlackEpiscopalians."Setusfree,OGod,fromeverybondofprejudiceandfear...thatwemayshowforthinourlivesthereconcilingloveandtruefreedomofGod..."Godactsonthebehalfoftheoppressed.TheUnionofBlackEpiscopaliansstandsinthecontinuingtraditionofmorethan200yearsofBlackleadershipintheEpiscopalChurch.BeginningwiththeestablishmentofSt.ThomasEpiscopalChurchbyAbsalomJonesin1794inthecityofPhiladelphia,throughtheelectionofBarbaraHarrisasSuffraganBishopofMassachusetts,andtheelectionofMichaelCurryasthe27thPresidingBishopoftheEpiscopalChurch,therehasalwaysbeenastrongcorpsofBlackChristiansintheEpiscopalChurch:peoplelikeJamesHolly,HenryDelaney,JohnWalker,TollieCaution,CharlesLawrence,DeborahHarmonHines,andcountlessothers.Organizedin1968astheUnionofBlackClergyandLaity,theUnionistheproudinheritoroftheworkofthesepeopleandearlierorganizations,theConvocationofColoredClergyandtheConferenceofChurchWorkersAmongColoredPeople,alldedicatedtotheministryofBlacksintheEpiscopalChurch.ThenamewaschangedtotheUnionofBlackEpiscopaliansin1971.TheUnionofBlackEpiscopaliansisaconfederationofmorethan55chaptersandinterestgroupsthroughoutthecontinentalUnitedStatesandtheCaribbean.TheUnionalsohasmembersinCanada,Africa,GreatBritain,andLatinAmerica.
