COMMANDER’S MESSAGE Cdr Jerry Williams, AP

So the boat is on the hard and ready for its winter cover of shrink wrap. Only 219 days until launch! The D9 Fall Conference is October 13 - 15, 2017, at the Treetops Resort in Gaylord, MI. I have attached the Sat-urday morning seminar offerings, so stop over and expand your knowledge of USPS, or your interest in weather or Mackinaw Straits Lighthouses. The classroom training aides from all of D9 squadrons will also be on exhibit. Friday night there are hospitality rooms from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. They always offer good food, some interesting beverages, and ICE CREAM SUNDAYS. GTBay is partnering with Lansing Power Squadron and we will be serving cherry filled sugar cookies. Lansing always provides delicious hors d’oeuvres. Hope to see you Friday night and/or Saturday morning. There is not a charge for the Hospitality Rooms or Semi-nars but it is recommended that you register so D9 will have an attendance count. If you are interested in lunch, be sure to send in your registration before October 6, 2017. Jerry

EDUCATION OFFICER LT/C Dave Terrell, AP

Come for the Boating Education…Stay for the Friends'

1. The last person took the sail test. Unfortunately, that student did not pass. I am sure this student would have passed if the exam had been taken when the course end-ed. I will ask this student about a retake. 2. The offerings for Winter have been determined. Attached is the proposed sched-ule. Sail was in initially scheduled as 11 sessions but had been change to 10 sessions. 3. An extended schedule is being worked going through this summer and beyond, This longer schedule will be shared next month when it has been reviewed by the Bridge.

eQuality Cruise 2017—P/C Bill Bailey This year’s eQuality Cruise was a big success with 8 boats participating, all sail except one. Many more non-boating members participated in the shore side activities. Friday was a great motor boat day for stink boaters and rag haulers alike. Friday evening found over 20 members attending the social hour at Northport which happened to coincide with a very good Music in the Park performance by a guitar and flute duo. Several went for ice cream after the music was finished. Saturday was calm as well and it was a short ride to Suttons Bay. More than 30 people were at the “Power Island” picnic at Suttons Bay. Arnie Taddia and Bill Bailey were challenged by the Holcombe father-son team to a game of Bocci Ball, which was interrupted by the feeding of the troops. Team Holcombe was leading with of score of 8 to 1 when dinner was announced. Food and camaraderie followed and the game was not finished, although half the Holcombe team had to leave the picnic early so the Taddia/Bailey team declared victory due to forfeiture. Brian Nelson and Tom Lyon were the grill masters and did a great job of cooking the hamburg-ers and brats. Dianna Terrell did an outstanding job of organizing the event along with David. Sunday was a dark and stormy day, but it was a great sail to Traverse City. Nice wind and alt-hough the sky was grey there were only a couple of sprinkles. David Terrell volunteered to handle the Blind Wine Tasting test Saturday afternoon. Several members brought their favorite wines to be judged but the winner was not announced. Those awards will be given at a later event! The sail to Elk Rapids was canceled on Monday due to the strong north wind. Had the wind been from any other direction it would have been another great sailing day, but no one wanted to crash into the whitecaps all the way up Old Mission. Away from the bay, it was a sunny, pleasant day which was spent in different ways. Some had out of town family and company, others went downtown. A few watched the movie “All Is Lost” in the boaters lounge and had a good time commenting and critiquing all the things that Robert Redford did wrong. Later that evening a large group had an end of cruise dinner at North Peak. Again, good food and great company. Many chose to stop at the Moomers Ice Cream stand on the way back to the marina and enjoy some frozen dessert. Back at Clinch Marina several members again assembled in the boaters lounge to watch “Captain Ron”. You have to love Captain Ron, they all did. It was the perfect ending to a suc-cessful cruise. But that wasn’t the end of the food feast! Tuesday morning, John and Cathy Holcombe made French toast with butter, syrup, strawberries, blueberries, and all kinds of wonderful things for the remaining boaters at Clinch before they all returned to their home ports. Thanks John and Cathy for another perfect ending to a great cruise.

SEPTEMBER INVOCATION

The summer seems to have flown by It barely paused to say goodbye

It has other places to go and lands to warm Maybe even create a large tropical storm

In leaving it makes room for fall

Some feel this is the best season of all

Foliage brightens with beautiful colors and hues Which is your favorite, which do you choose

It happens every year and we are always amazed

But it is God who should really be praised

For what he has given to all of us His change of seasons is just another plus
