Breeder of the Year
Sam-Son FarmSam-Son Farm has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 Breeder of the Year Award, sponsored by Agribrands Purina.
Sam-Son Farm, now operated by Mark and Kim Samuel and Rick Balaz and family, has been an integral part of the Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding Industry since 1972. Previously recognized with this award in 1991 and 2000, and as a result of their remarkable achievements in 2013, Sam-Son Farm is once again being honoured as Breeder of the Year.
Sam-Son Farm’s 2013 racing season was arguably one of their best, producing 40 winners from 60 starters and earnings of almost $4,000,000. Not only did they win their 8th Sovereign Award as Outstanding Breeder, their homebred Up With the Birds, after being awarded the Sovereign for Champion Three-Year-Old Male, was crowned Canada’s 2013 Horse of the Year. Other notable winners include Dance Again winner of the Carotene S., His Race to Win winner of the Ontario Derby G3, Part the Seas winner of the Avowal S. and Bessarabian S. G2 and Smartyfly winner of the Wonder Where S.
2013 was a fantastic year for Sam-Son Farm, and the CTHS would like to congratulate
them on their outstanding achievements.
Mint Julep Cup R. Glenn Sikura
R. Glenn Sikura, Owner of Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms (Canada), a perennially leading Breeder and Consignor to the CTHS Sales, has been unanimously selected to receive the Blood-Horse’s Mint Julep Cup in recognition of his dedication and lifetime of contributions to the Thoroughbred Horse Industry.
Glenn acquired his love and passion for breeding and racing Thoroughbreds, quite naturally, by following in the footsteps of his mentor and father, John Sikura, Sr., a pioneer of our Industry, who also earned the Mint Julep Cup in 1994, and who was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.
At the young age of 27, Glenn ran for election to the Board of the CTHS, Ontario Division and on December 9th, 1986, was welcomed as a new Director. After serving 8 consecutive years on the Board, Glenn was elected President of the CTHS Ontario Division, a position he continues to hold today. For the past 28 years, Glenn has tirelessly and selflessly volunteered his time as a dedicated and stalwart contributor to the health and survival of our Breeding Industry, both through the good times and through the many challenging periods we have confronted.
The CTHS is proud to honour R. Glenn Sikura with the well-deserved Mint Julep Cup for his lifetime of dedication and commitment to the Horse Industry.
