Greetings

September 2014

On behalf of the local organizing committee it is both an honor and a pleasure

to announce the convening of the 30th Politzer Society Meeting in Niigata

Japan from June 30 to July 4 2015 The 1st World Congress of Otology is also

slated to be held at the same time

Our primary objective for the meeting is to bring together up-and-coming

researchers to present and actively discuss up-to-date research results from the

fields of otology and neurotology Nothing would bring me more pleasure than

to see the new insights obtained at this meeting applied clinically and to future

research

With a population of approximately 800000 Niigata City is the largest city on

the Sea of Japan side Directly facing the Sea of Japan it is calm and beautiful

city through which the longest river in Japan (the Shinano River) runs

Niigata is also known as a treasure trove of delectable foods ranging from fresh

seafood to delicious high-grade rice and Japanese sake (rice wine) Early July

is the most pleasant month of the year in Niigata and I am certain that

participants of the meeting will enjoy a comfortable stay there

The local organizing committee is committed to make this meeting a

memorable one for all participants We truly hope that as many of the members

of the Politzer Society as possible will be able to join us in Niigata in 2015

The Politzer Society Meeting is an international meeting held by the Politzer

Society which is the worldrsquos largest organization related to otology and

neuro-otology The meetingrsquos name Politzer was named after the otologist Adam

Politzer who was active in Europe from the late 19th century to the beginning

of the 20th century He not only conducted many surgeries as a clinical otologist

but also developed otological medical equipments conducted various forms of

research related to physiology and pathology of hearing and authored many

books and textbooks In keeping with Adam Politzerrsquos accomplishments this

meeting was held for the first time in 1978 in Davos (Switzerland) as an

opportunity for advanced physicians and researchers in the field of otology and

neuro-otology to hold discussions and make presentations Since then it has

been now held once every two years mainly in Europe In the past in places

other than Europe it has been held four times in North America and only once

in Asia in Seoul (South Korea) in 2005 It is very meaningful and a great honor

that the commemorable 30th meeting will be held in Niigata City

In the field of otology the times changed from controlling middle ear infections

that could cause fatal inflammation to hearing improvement surgeries in the

late 20th century Now in the 21st century the times have changed from

hearing improvement surgeries to restoring lost hearing

ability and acquiring hearing ability for children with congenital hearing

impairments Among these things cochlear implants by which it is possible to

obtain auditory sense by inserting electrodes inside the cochlea and delivering

electrical stimulus have become dramatically pervasive throughout the world

At present devices that stimulate the brain stem which is a nerve are also

being developed and surgeries are being conducted Such advances in otology

and neuro-otology are remarkable developments that surpass other medical

fields and they are playing an important role as the leading runner not only in

otorhinolaryngology but also in the entire field of medicine

For the 30th Politzer Society Meeting we are carefully selecting newsworthy

themes from almost the entire scope of otology and audiological medicine and

using them to form its content At this meeting many physicians and

researchers who are active in the same fields will participate hold lively

discussions and exchange opinions and the purpose is for the knowledge

learned at the meeting to be utilized in future clinical practice and research

The 1st World Congress of Otology which will be the first branch meeting of the

International Federation of Otorhinolarygological Society (IFOS) will also be

held along with the meeting and we expect that it will be able to contribute to

the further development of otology and neuro-otology

The local organizing committee is committed to make this meeting a

memorable one for all participants We truly hope that as many of the members

of the Politzer Society as possible will be able to join us in Niigata in 2015

late 20th century Now in the 21st century the times have changed from

hearing improvement surgeries to restoring lost hearing

ability and acquiring hearing ability for children with congenital hearing

impairments Among these things cochlear implants by which it is possible to

obtain auditory sense by inserting electrodes inside the cochlea and delivering

electrical stimulus have become dramatically pervasive throughout the world
