2.00pm THE ENGINE ROOM WORKSHOP
As you may well know, the ‘Engine Room’ is a nickname given to bass and drums (the rhythm section) in a band. it’s arguably where a bands power and movement come from, and some say it can be a thankless job as people don’t appreciate what a good engine room does! This workshop will look at the role of bass and drums in music, and in blues music in particular.Expect: a bass and drum talk on the history and development of the rhythm section, examples of styles and techniques, questions from the floor and finally, jamming with the band and guests. On hand will be a drummer and bass player to explain how their instruments have developed, and together they will show how the two work together in the engine room of a band. They will demo styles such as swing, Latin, slow blues and shuffles in various forms, before they open up the show to questions from the floor and invite guests onto the stage. All you need to participate is a ticket for the event – either a Sunday ticket, or a full weekend ticket.

JACK J HUTCHINSON’S ACOUSTIC BLUES SHOWCASE
‘It is a real honour to curate the Little Theatre stage at the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival. I grew up just down the road in Burnley, and it always feels like coming home when I play or simply attend the festival.
When Lucy Zirins asked me to take over the role of curator from her for the 2019 event, I had a pretty clear idea of the type of acts I wanted to book early on. Although I am a massive fan of traditional blues, I was keen that the stage not only represents the genre in the 21st century, but also how artists are taking it forward and connecting with a new generation. There are a number of acts on the bill who, whilst tipping their hats to the past, offer something refreshing and contemporary. What they all share is a commitment to new, original material. I am first and foremost a songwriter, and this is the type

This new “Roadhouse” is named after the Architect, Alfred Waterhouse, that designed Colne Town Hall in the late 19th Century.Restoring the Town Hall reception room to its original size and giving the town hall a large multi-purpose room, this, the Waterhouse Bar, is an exciting development. it is not every day you can have a drink and enjoy top quality live blues music in an historical building; another first for the 30th Anniversary of Blues in Colne.

Long before the first Blues Festival was ever put on here, Colne had a hard-earned reputation as a cauldron of musical creativity and this continues right through to the present day.
Throughout the year, you can find up to twenty venues in the town that host live music, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that a thriving unofficial Fringe Festival has grown up alongside the official one, often showcasing performers from a wide variety of genres, not just Blues based ones. Some of the events are planned in advance and sometimes, in true artistic tradition, they are thrown together in an ad hoc manner on the day.
A great number of musicians, engineers and promoters started their careers in this kind of world and we welcome this spirit of independence in our midst.
Hopefully, there will be a flyer nestling in these pages giving some of the event listings, but if there isn’t for some reason, just ask around the town and someone will surely point you in the right direction.

A better connected Burnley. Burnley Connect is the name for the network of services around the town and into Pendle.
Burnley Connect are local buses running throughout the day, 7 days a week. During the day, Burnley Connect services generally run at least every 30 minutes, with higher frequencies on some routes; this is a great way to travel. The buses are energy efficient and therefore better for the environment.
Community Rail lancashire has arranged for a train to leave Colne Railway station at 3:11pm Friday 23rd August, travelling to Blackpool then Preston and returning to Colne for 7:07pm.
Trains will leave Colne slightly later on the Friday and Saturday nights.
