Laurie Thomas New Zealand Landscape Salon 2017 Welcome to the 2017 21st Laurie Thomas Salon (LTS) New Zealand Landscape competition. This year we had 169 people enter 651 images, which is very close to a record number of entries. So thank you all for taking part and sharing our beautiful New Zealand landscape and how we see it. We had to create a new competition web site this year, at very short notice, and it worked very well as less than 3 per cent of entrants had issues. For the salon in 2018 we will be using the same website and instructions will be sent out via email, the https://lauriethomassalon.com website and Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/320580375006402/ I would like to thank our three judges who carried out the judging in Southland: PSNZ Honours Board Chairman Graham Dainty FPSNZ, who led the Selection Panel, Roger Wandless FPSNZ FNZIPP and Kevin Tyree APSNZ. Also to make this event happen Christchurch Photographic Society members played a big part to make the event come together with a special thank you to Carol Green, Jo Curtis, Belinda Carter, Gavin Melville and Stephen Laird. Well done to the 18 per cent who achieved an acceptance or higher award in a tough competition with very high photography standards maintained by the judging panel. This year we are making the AV and catalogue available for downloading and for sharing. An email with the web links will be sent out with your results.

Paul FurboroughPresident Christchurch Photographic Society and Salon Co-ordinator

Convening Judge’s CommentsThe Judging was held in Invercargill on 10th June. Myself , Kevin Tyree APSNZ and Roger Wandless FPSNZ were the judges. We had help from Annie Carmichael, Stephanie Forrester and Rodney Adamson of the Southland Photographic Society with the projection and recording. The judging was via a web based programme and worked very well. The judging took eight hours. We felt the Christchurch Photographic Society’s Laurie Thomas Landscape competition is one of the country’s top specialist subject competitions and it was an honour to judge it. Seeing some of the top landscape images from all around New Zealand was very inspiring and we were pleased to see true landscape photography is in good form. The judges were looking for original views that conveyed that sense of truly capturing the es-sence of our New Zealand landscape. The top images did this with varying styles and views but all gave that extra something. The top images that were awarded acceptances and above showed a good level of understanding the subtle-ties of a good landscape. A lot of images were deemed to be over-processed and marked down accordingly. Simple things like not removing dust spots and not levelling horizons also scored against some entrants. We hope all the entrants enjoyed the competition and even if you were not successful this time, the time photographing out in our wonderful and varied country is never wasted. Strive to improve your images and re-enter next year. This com-petition does set the landscape standard just as Laurie Thomas did himself in years gone by. Graham Dainty FPSNZ

The winner of the CPS Laurie Thomas Landscape Salon gets to keep a beautiful trophy. Designed by Lesley Sales FPSNZ, the trophy known as ‘Wind & Water’ sym-bolises the essence of the New Zealand landscape: water, wind, trees and light.

Lesley says the outline shape suggests a mountain, and the forces acting upon it to carve out the landscape.

Mountain streams flowing down the moun-tain sides are depicted by internalcut-out lines.

The action of the wind is suggested by an invisible, implied line that begins as a curl on the outside edge of the mountain, and flows across the landscape.

Trees clinging to the mountain sides..add another dimension, that of vegetation and plant growth.

Light defines the shape of the mountain, illuminating the waters, the shapes, the trees, silhouetting the shapes of the landscape.
