The Davallian Grow with Respect No. 3 14th March 2019

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Our very ‘SMART’ and goal focussed Year 2’s from A 2 were our hosts at this morning’s assem-bly. Their theme was goal setting and they talked about the importance of having SMART goals! Specific – What exactly do you want to happen? Measurable – How will you know when you have reached your goal? Action – What steps will you take to reach your goals? Realistic – Can you achieve your goal? Time – What is the timeline for reaching your goal? A fantastic assembly and we look forward to seeing the students from A2 persevering to achieve many goals in the future. Well done to Mrs Murnane and to all parents who supported the assembly. Limiting Screen Time for Children As a father of 3 teenage children, the amount of technology utilised and time spent using elec-tronic devises is crazy. Yes, there are times technology is a necessary evil, but more often than not, children these days are gravitating to technology for their ‘down time’ effectively increasing their screen time. There are many sites you can locate with great examples of strategies par-ents can use to reduce the amount of screen time students are accessing. Here is one example from the ‘verywellfamily’:

Model Healthy Electronic Use Educate Yourself on Electronics Create ‘Technology-Free Zones’ Set aside Times to Unplug Use Parental Controls Talk to Kids About the Dangers of Too Much Screen Time Obtain Your Child’s Password Encourage Other Activities Make Screen Time a Privilege Don’t Allow Screen Media in Your Child’s Bedroom

P r i n c i p a l ’ s M e s s a g e ( c o n t i n u e d ) Ice-cream Friday This is always an exciting day at Davallia Primary School and is always well supported. Well done to our fabulous P & C who organised the ice-creams and raised approximately $300 for the P & C. Thank you to the many parents who also came along to support on the day and to the wider com-munity for supporting the ventures of our P & C. It was pleasing to hear that student manners and conduct were absolutely fantastic on the day. Well done to all involved.

Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework Yesterday, as a response to directions contained in the Director General’s Focus 2019 document, our staff were involved in professional learning surrounding the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework. Simon Zuvich and Rosie Paine from the Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning Directorate led the session which was really interesting, thought provoking and helpful. The team will return next Wednesday for a second workshop. For more information about the Aboriginal Cul-tural Standards Framework http://det.wa.edu.au/aboriginaleducation/detcms/navigation/aboriginal-education/ Kiss and Drive – Mornings A reminder to parents that the processes for Kiss and Drive in the mornings is exactly the same as what is in operation in the afternoons. Should you need to step out of your car to assist your chil-dren in the mornings, Kiss and Drive is not for you. Thanks for your understanding in this regard. Skateboards and Scooters at School Students are reminded that skateboards and scooters are not brought to school. Unfortunately, even if students are planning to go to another friend’s place or the skate park after school, parents will need to find another way to manage this issue. In the past, the school has experienced safety issues with scooters and cars and also damage to court surfaces. Further to this, a number of stu-dents are using scooters after school on the basketball courts. Parents are asked not to allow your children to use scooters and skateboards on the school grounds. Your assistance with this is appre-ciated.

Warning – Barker’s Nests Obviously it is nesting season for our four legged friends and their irresponsible owners. We have found this week the shoes of a number of unsuspecting children have found the nasty packages left around our school. Please feel comfortable to politely remind dog walkers, who present as irresponsible, to pick up after their hounds.

Of Mice and Pen Next term the Year Threes and Year Fives will be completing the NAPLAN assessments online. The Year Fives will do all the tests on a desktop computer or a laptop. The Year Threes will do all except Writing, which they do with a pencil and paper as in previous years. To assist our students to get ready for NAPLAN, teachers have been incorporating the use of computers and the skills of word processing into tasks such as writing. The school is further supporting this by providing access to the Typing Tournament application. Typing though, is not the only skill that will need refining for children to achieve their best in NAPLAN. We acknowledge that many children are highly skilled with technology already. They are digital natives who in many cases have been ‘playing’ with tablet devices since before they could talk. But swiping and pinching as we do on a tablet requires quite a different kind of dexterity to that used to manipulate something approximating a potato whilst looking in another direction. Selecting, dragging and clicking on an item on a screen with a detached mouse is nothing like looking at and touching the screen of a tablet to select or move something. It’s not surprising that many children are finding the keyboard and mouse are quite foreign tools. From what we know, completing questions and writing in NAPLAN testing is very reliant on keyboard and mouse skills. As a result, upskilling our students has been a focus for a couple of years now. At home I would encourage you to introduce your child to using a keyboard and mouse as part of their screen time. There are lots of great pieces of software where using a mouse is integral to manipulating objects on the screen, but ask your child’s classroom teacher if you are unsure. Giving your child a chance to write with a keyboard is also a good idea, so they learn about the tools outside of just typing, eg, Enter, Shift, Space and Backspace. Every student from Year Two to Six also have an account with Typing Tournament that they can access anywhere to improve their typing skills. We are looking forward to the new approach to NAPLAN and are confident our students will be well

prepared.

RIDE2SCHOOL DAY Ride to School Day is a school and community event. This year Davallia Primary will be having its annual Ride2School Day on Friday March 22 in conjunction with Bike Week. We strongly encourage parents to walk or ride to school on this day with their children to promote the health benefits of cycling. Cycling is a free activity and great fun too. It helps improve the environment and keep our bodies fit and healthy. It helps alleviate traffic congestion around the school and students arrive at school invigorated and ready to learn. Children 10 years of age or over can ride by themselves, while children under 10 will need to be accompanied by an adult. An approved helmet is compulsory for this event. It is strongly recommended that students bring a lock to secure their bike in the bike racks. Students need to walk their bikes in the school grounds once they arrive. A mass photo of participants will be taken on the basketball court at 8.55 am sharp to celebrate the occasion. There will also be raffle prizes and lunchtime activities. These will include a ‘decorate your bike’ competition for the juniors and bike races on the oval and basketball court for the middle and upper year levels. So why not jump on your bike and support this fun event. Look forward to seeing you there.
