THUNDER AND LIGHTNING AT CHINO

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt were the featured warbirds for the 2018 Planes of Fame Air Show hosted at the Chino Airport over the weekend of May 5-6. With that in mind, no less than six P-38s were on the airfield. Planes of Fame’s recently refurbished P-47G Thunderbolt arrived back at Chino just in time to fly together with Allied Fighter’s P-47D “Dottie Mae.”

However, there were a lot more warbirds flying in the show as well, including four P-40E and P-40N Warhawks, a dozen P-51A, B and D Mustangs, a pair of F7F-3 Tigercats, two B-25J Mitchell bombers, a rare Convair PB4Y-2 Privateer , a pair of Douglas C-47/C-53 Skytrain/Skytrooper transports and a P-63A Kingcobra. By the spring of 1939 the storms of war were growing in intensity in both Europe and Asia. The United States military recognized that it was ill-prepared should it be brought into the impending conflicts.

And so began one of the most important, and little known chapters of World War II military history – the subsequent training of over 200,000 Army combat flyers by civilian-run schools from 1939 to 1944.

From August 1940 until October 1944, nearly 12,000 cadets were trained at Cal-Aero, and 87 percent of these were graduated. Cal-Aero grads went on to serve with distinction – nearly 800 awards for achievement were presented, including a Congressional Medal of Honor and multiple Distinguished Service Crosses, Silver Star medals, and Distinguished Flying Crosses.

This special presentation will relate the early beginnings of the Cal Aero Academy, look at the coursework taught at the school, and discuss many of the unique personalities involved in the Cal-Aero story. From the “country-club” style

of living at the base, to its use in Hollywood and Army training films, presentations by the Museum’s Education Programs team will provide insight into the amazing history of the Cal-Aero Flight Academy. Additional discussion will look at the Chino Airport immediately following the hostilities of WWII – when the Chino location became a staging area for obsolete aircraft.

Comments from several Cal-Aero grads will also be a part of the program.

TASTE OF FLIGHT GALA RETURNS – BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

The twelfth annual Planes of Fame Air Museum “Taste of Flight Gala” promises to be a night of lasting memories, important fundraising, and good time for everyone. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Planes of Fame Air Museum. All proceeds from the evening’s festivities will benefit the Educational Outreach efforts of the Museum.

This year’s event promises to be one of our best ever with a wide selection of delicious food tastings from local restaurants, wonderful wines, beers, and spirits from top wineries, breweries, and distilleries, and fantastic entertainment – with the evening culminating in the presentation of the esteemed “Achievement in Aviation” award.

In addition to sampling the many culinary delights, guests help the Museum’s education programs by participating in our extensive Silent Auction. Filled with aviation art, autographed memorabilia, fabulous gift baskets, access to local amusements, an incredible selection of one-of-a-kind items and more, the auction is both fun and exciting as guests outbid one another for these keepsake items. And, with the holidays just a few weeks after the event, this year’s auction is a great chance to pick up some exceptional gift items.

The highlight of every “Taste of Flight” Gala is the presentation of the Planes of Fame Achievement in Aviation Award. This award is presented to individuals who have made a

significant contribution to aviation over time, either in the form of innovations, knowledge, or methods to improve the industry. Within aviation circles, the award is considered to be one of the more prestigious honors bestowed. Past recipients include Colonel Bud Anderson, Clay Lacy, astronaut Bill Anders, and Sean D. Tucker among others.

This year, the award will be presented to two individuals, Pete Law and Bruce Boland, the “Lennon and McCartney” of aviation engineering. As aeronautic and aircraft systems engineers, aerodynamicists, designers, and aviation innovators, their work has made an indelible mark on the aviation industry – from top-secret reconnaissance aircraft to high performance air racers. Mr. Boland’s recognition is sadly presented posthumously, having passed away in 1995 and Mr. Law will accept the recognition for both gentlemen.

Plans are ongoing to make the event even more spectacular. The “Taste of Flight Gala” traditionally sells out. Tickets will be available on the Museum website beginning in August. Watch for future announcements. For more information, please contact either Liz Esparza or Brian Finnegan at 909-597-3722, or via email at [email protected] or [email protected].

THUNDERBOLT REJUVENATIONBy Frank B. Mormillo

The subject of an extensive rejuvenation effort, Planes of Fame Air Museum’s P-47G Thunderbolt returned to its home at Chino, California just in time to take part at in the 2018 Planes of Fame Air Show at Chino, California over the weekend of May 5-6. Of the 15,660 Republic Thunderbolt fighter planes manufactured during World War II, 354 were built under license by Republic Aircraft in New York under the designation P-47G. The P-47G was comparable to razor-back versions of the P-47D built by Republic.

Manufactured for the U.S. Army Air Forces as P-47G-15-CU #42-25254, the Planes of Fame Air Museum’s Thunderbolt was used as a fighter trainer during the war before winding up as an instructional airframe at the Grand Central Airport in Glendale, California. Edward T. Maloney, founder of the Planes of Fame Air Museum, obtained the airplane in 1952 and kept it in storage until it was returned to flying condition in 1963. Damaged in a forced landing in 1971, the Thunderbolt was eventually restored to flying condition again in May 1985. Flown often during the next three decades, in 2016 Northern California warbird pilot and restorer Thomas Camp volunteered to refurbish the Thunderbolt again.

Over a period of 19 months, with assistance from Wayne Cook and David Hoover, and

using drawings and replacement parts provided by Mike Breshears, the restorer of the combat veteran P-47D Thunderbolt “Dottie Mae,” Camp completely restored the Thunderbolt’s cockpit to original configuration, overhauled and installed original instruments, fabricated and installed a new fuel system, installed a new oil shut off valve and pre-oil system, installed a new electrical system and replaced the cockpit canopy glass.

“The cockpit is now totally original (complete with armor plate behind the seat); before, we had just fitted it with the instruments necessary to make it fly,” said Planes of Fame President Steve Hinton. “The refurbishment took a year and seven months, but it was worth the wait,” added Hinton. At the 2018 Planes of Fame Air Show the P-47D flew together with the P-47D “Dottie Mae” in a Word War II European Theater of Operations scenario, also took part in the opening ceremony fly-over and flew together with a P-38 Lightning and an A-10C Thunderbolt II for the show’s concluding USAF Heritage Flight display.
