Welcome to the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation —the Good River Reservation or Wakpa Wasté Oyanke. Here you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy local hospitality, western history, and Lakota culture.
There are 27 communities throughout the Reservation, but four towns serve the greater population. Isabel, Dupree, Eagle Butte and Timber Lake provide products, recreational opportunities, medical and educational facilities, churches, financial services, lodging and dining establishments.
Shop Cheyenne River! While you’re in our communities, be sure to shop in our local businesses, eat in our restaurants and stay in our motels. Also, attend a local event to learn more about the history and culture of the area.
Two nationally recognized drives are found on the Reservation; the Native American Scenic Byway and the Lewis and Clark Trail. Both routes provide a scenic and historic tour for visitors.

Dupree The community of Dupree, founded in 1910, is located on the west end of the Cheyenne River Reservation, along Hwy. 212. This western community plays host to numerous events each year, including the regional high school rodeo held the 2nd weekend in June, and the Pioneer Days Celebration held the second weekend in July.
Eagle Butte Eagle Butte, founded in 1910, serves as the headquarters for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Every year, the Tribe’s annual Fair and Powwow is held in Eagle Butte over Labor Day weekend, in September. Located along Hwy 212, in the central portion of the Reservation, the community boasts a variety of products and services for area consumers. The Eagle Butte Community Club puts on the Hometown Days celebration every July.
Isabel Founded in 1911, the town of Isabel is located in the northern portion of the Cheyenne River Reservation. In the early years, the railroad played an important role in the establishment of the community. Today, agriculture is the leading industry. Each year, the town hosts a celebration and rodeo the first weekend in August.
Timber Lake Timber Lake was founded in 1910 when the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation was opened to homesteading. Timber Lake’s Days of 1910 Celebration is held annually the last full weekend in July.
Travel Tips: Few businesses on the Cheyenne River Reservation are open 24 hours. However, credit cards are accepted at most gas stations. Minimal cell service is available throughout the area.

CULTURAL PRESERVATION
Cultural Preservation is proud of the Lakota heritage on
the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Indian Reservation. We
welcome you to our land and ask that you educate yourselves
before going out and exploring. Help us preserve our cultural
resources and respect the past. Never remove artifacts from
the area. Tribes, as sovereign nations, have the authority to
pass its own laws and there are Federal Laws that also protect
cultural and historic sites.
