The Haslemere Guide

Welcome to the Haslemere Guide. My name is Heather and I took over the magazine in December and I am looking forward to gradually introducing new material into the publication. Already a useful point of reference for services, I hope to bring items of local interest, places to visit etc and if there is something you would like to see included do let me know. Indeed if you would like to have your own content published, please get in touch, as I know there are SO many stories to be told, hobbies to share and pictures to see!

A new website is available for 2017, which will gain new features as we move on, so I hope you will want to explore both fully.

I hope you like the new front cover title by the way!

Best wishes Heather

Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare

8

Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare rehomes, rehabilitates and provides sanctuary for over 2000 animals each year. Could you provide a loving home for one of the animals there?

Animals arrive at Raystede for all sorts of reasons ranging from relationship breakdowns to the death of an owner. Many of the animals here have been loved family pets, and through no fault of their own need a fresh start.

Every single animal that we receive is vet checked and assessed by our staff. Our top priority is to match every pet with an owner who will provide the best environment and life for that particular animal, which means we have a very low percentage of pets that are returned.

We also provide ongoing support and advice once an adoption has taken place. Every pet whether it’s a dog, cat, hamster or hen, regardless of their age and background, need lifelong attention, love and care. Taking one on is never a decision to be taken lightly.

Please do not dismiss adopting a rescue pet. There are many misconceptions around rescue centres and the animals that end up in them. Some people believe that these animals are ‘damaged.’ This is not the case, in fact it is far from the truth. It means they have had to endure big changes in their life and in many cases abuse, neglect or heart break but they still have endless amounts of love to give. They wait so patiently to be offered a forever home and when they are, they are so grateful and happy to be in a loving home that the bond they develop with their new owners is stronger than ever. Raystede is a rescue centre unlike any other, we have a 43 acre site which is home to a wide range of animals.

Parrots and other exotic birds live in our large aviaries and we have horses and donkeys to say hello to. Many people envisage a rescue centre as a sad, depressing place but we offer the animals here a very relaxed, comfortable and safe environment.

There is a lot to discover at Raystede and we have a dog friendly cafe, charity shop and a tranquil area to feed wild birds on our lake. If you have ever considered adopting a pet we welcome you to visit Raystede and speak to our knowledgeable staff. We won’t rush you into anything and we will provide you with as much information as possible about your proposed animal. We have a lot of different breeds that come into the centre ranging from Persian cats and pug dogs to prize winning rabbits. You may be surprised at what you find!

For adoption enquiries or further information please contact our rehoming team on: 01825 880 468 www.raystede.org

Make a New Year Resolution you can keep – Make a will Christine Hanson discusses the history of New Year Resolutions

10

Chiltlee Manor, Haslemere Road, Liphook GU30 7AZ 01428 772189 [email protected] www.couchmanhanson.co.uk

By the time you read this article, the turkey, cake and chocolates will have been eaten and most of us will have made and broken

a number of New Year Resolutions. Research shows that the top five broken resolutions each year are: losing weight (it’s amazing just how little turkey, cake and chocolate is required to produce half a stone), getting fit, getting organised, spending less and enjoying life.

That was then …

The tradition of making a resolution is said to go back to the ancient Babylonians when promises were made to their gods to repay their debts and return borrowed objects. If they kept their promises their gods would bestow good fortune upon them. Failure would see them fall from their gods’ favour – never a great place to be.

January 1st became the start of the New Year in about 46BC when Julius Caesar dabbled with the calendar and the Romans too made promises of good conduct to their god Janus for the coming year.

Early Christians started to use the New Year to ponder their mistakes and resolve to do better in future.

This is now …

Today, despite its religious roots, the making of a New Year Resolution is a mainly secular event. We focus on self improvement, making promises to ourselves rather than gods. This probably explains why so many of us fail to keep them, despite our best efforts!

How many New Year Resolutions have you broken so far? I can’t help with the weight loss and getting fit resolutions – I haven’t done well on that front either. But I can help with getting organised. For example, making a Will is a job that nearly 60% of adults never get around to. Having spent years working hard to achieve some savings we don’t even note down who we want those savings to go to.

We can spend a fortune on our children in Christmas presents, but then neglect the most precious gift a parent can give – appointing a guardian to take care of them in the event of an unexpected death.

Over the years I have seen hundreds of clients, many of whom tell me they have been putting off making their Will for decades. Once made they always feel much happier having ticked something off their ‘To Do’ list.

Over to you …

I know life can get in the way of getting organised and making a Will. Maybe a trip out to an office is just too much for you. If so, I can come to you. If juggling the demands of work and children leave very little time between 9 and 5 I am happy to make out of hours’ appointments. So, if you would like some further advice about making a Will, getting a tick on your ‘To Do’ list and finally keeping one of those New Year Resolutions then please do get in touch.

Pensions, Investments and Retirement Planning Graham, Inter Co IFA Services

13

01428 772310 [email protected] www.intercoifaservices.co.uk

InterCo IFA Services Ltd is a locally based financial advisory firm providing advice on pensions, investments and inheritance tax planning.

InterCo IFA Services is an independent company and has access to a wide range of products to suit every need.

InterCo IFA Services offer a review of clients’ existing plans and benefits, including:

• Making use of ISA Allowances,

• Capital Gains Tax Allowances,

• Pension Allowances,

• GiKs,

• Requirements for Auto-Enrolment,

• Venture Capital Trusts,

• Use of Business Relief.

The changes announced in the 2014 Budget were designed with the purpose of giving individuals greater flexibility to access their Defined Contributions (DC) pension savings. They were confirmed in the Taxation of Pensions Bill published in October 2014 and took effect from 6th April 2015.

If you were aged over 55 on 6th April 2015 you can take advantage of the increased flexibility but obtaining professional advice is essential to make sure you get an informed analysis of your particular situation.

This is a case study of a client who approached Graham last year:

Our client received a pile of pension paperwork which made little sense to him. Following a review we discovered he actually had four pensions and each different pension provider needed him to make a decision on taking benefits. Our client found this all very confusing and needed help sorting it all out.

After our initial meeting, we worked out some potential options taking into account his circumstances and objectives. The providers were asked to clarify the

benefit details and available options. The client was surprised at the flexibility afforded to him having taken into account the pension rule changes from 2014 and 2015. He did not realise that he could only take the benefit of one of his pensions as a tax freelump sum. This fund was not accruing any further benefit, interest or growth and was being eroded by inflation. Having sought advice our client was then able to use the new rules to his advantage. It enabled him to increase his existing income as and when needed rather than the restrictive benefits being imposed upon him by his previous scheme.

The new pension rules provide much wider choice for those building up their pension funds and considering what to do with their retirement planning.

• Auto Enrolment and Tax Planning advice are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority

• A pension is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and legislation.

Lion Green Playground Improvements

In recent months Haslemere Town Council has been working on upgrading the play area at Lion Green. Much of the existing equipment dates back many years and was in need of renewal, and it was felt that there needed to be more equipment targeted to older children.

Some older pieces of equipment were therefore removed and have now been replaced with a multi-play unit, a team swing and a Rota-Bounce.

Children from Shottermill Infant and Juniors Schools were invited to attend the grand opening by the Mayor. Many of our councillors attended, as did representatives and a photographer from the Haslemere Herald.

Multi Storey Car ParkOn Friday 16th December the new multi storey car park at Haslemere Station was formally opened by the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP and the Mayor of Haslemere Councillor Sahran Abeysundara. The

Haslemere Happenings February 2017

14

opening took place in the presence of Councillor Michael Dover, a previous Mayor of Haslemere, who originally championed the idea of having a multi storey car park in this location.

This scheme is something that Haslemere Town Council has supported over a number of years so thanks go to Network Rail, South West Trains and all involved for ensuring the successful completion of this project.

Cats Protection HaslemereCould you volunteer?

We rely heavily on our team of excellent volunteers to provide our cats with the best care.

We are currently looking for ded-icated volunteers to help us with:

• Weekday morning cleaning (9-11).• Weekday afternoons for sociali- sing some of our nervous cats (1.30-3.30).• Weekday afternoons for dinner time feeds (3.30-4.45).

We are a rehoming centre on the outskirts of Hasle-mere. We typically have around 60 cats in in need of new homes for a variety of reasons. If you are look-ing for that purr-fect com-panion, please get in touch.

Steve, aged 6

Edith, aged 2 ½

Harry and Steve were part of a group of 10 cats who came in to us in need of a new home. They are a little nervous, but we are told they are affectionate and friendly once they get to know you.

Harry, Steve, and the rest of their family, are looking for quiet house-holds where they can settle at their own pace. They are used to living with other cats, and have also lived happily with a dog.

Could you offer a home to a cat like Harry or Steve? Please get in touch.

Are you aware that your Mac is likely to be installed with software which makes backing up your computer as easy as plugging in an external hard drive? The reason my customers

give most often for not backing up on a regular basis is that they are unsure how to do this.

Whether your data consists of family photos, student projects or business records, your computer will be holding information that would be difficult, if not impossible to replace in the event of a disaster – physical or digital.

If you are using 10.4 Tiger operating system or a more recent version, your Mac will have ‘Time Machine’ programme waiting to help you easily back up all of your computer’s data.

On your Mac computer, simply connect a blank external hard drive and the Operating System will ask if you want to use this drive as a Time Machine Backup Disk. Say ‘Yes’ and leave for all the files to be copied (for a first time backup, this may take a few hours, or even overnight). Leave the hard drive connected and Time Machine will backup every hour or plug it in regularly to keep your drive up to date. Non-Apple computers may work in different ways but you should be able to find backup software within the operating system. I recently had to upgrade a computer from Snow Leopard (10.6), to the newer Sierra (10.12) Operating System.

Performing this upgrade is no longer possible with a direct upgrade, so it needs two separate installations and the customer had not downloaded any of the free intervening systems from Apple. Thanks to the Time Machine application, I was able to download all personal information and data to an external hard drive before carrying out these upgrades to the Mac. I then used Time Machine to reinstall all of the data to the new OS, making the transition of data relatively straight forward.

It is wise to backup your Mac before doing any work on the system, as it is much easier to retrieve than recreate files. Also remember that the longer the gap between your backups the more material you will risk having to recreate or retrieve from other sources if anything were to happen to your computer.

If you have questions about anything discussed here or questions about buying a computer, I would be happy to help. I detect and solve problems that customers have with their Apple computer products. Call me on 01420 538575 or email Robert on [email protected] and I can advise you on your best course of action.

Could I benefit from seeing a Podiatrist/Chiropodist?Tel: 01428 642577 Email: [email protected]

PHYSIOTHERAPY – PODIATRY – SPORTS INJURIES – CHIROPODY – AROMATHERAPY – REFLEXOLOGY –

MASSAGE – PILATES CLASSES – PILATES REFORMER – ACUPUNCTURE – COUNSELLING

Firstly, we have to try to clear up the difference between the two terms. Podiatrists and Chiropodists are essentially the same. They undergo the same training and are both experts if the field of foot biomechanics and foot care.

Chiropodists as a rule tend to manage the problems that arise in the feet due to uneven loading. These can often present as corns, hard skin, blisters and various nail problems. They specialise in looking after people who may have problems looking after their feet for a variety of reasons and patients with Diabetes or circulatory foot problems.

Podiatrists look at how the foot works and reacts with the ground (biomechanics) that may give rise to uneven pressures on the feet and lead to the problems cited above. Abnormal

biomechanics may even cause mechanical problems higher up the legs that can give rise to other joint or muscular issues. Podiatrists are then able to give advice on suitable footwear or provide a variety of insoles that control foot motion and prevent the myriad of problems that extra motion can lead to. Insoles vary from simple “off the shelf” insoles to fully bespoke, custom made insoles that we make here on site in Haslemere.

Now, we all have feet that may turn in or out by varying degrees and whether you get problems with them may be due to several factors. Your age, weight, foot biomechanics, activity levels and how much you do. Interestingly, about this time of year we start to see quite a few runners who are in the midst of their London Marathon training. These training schedules can quite hard on the body and where the runners are increasing their mileage, sometimes their own biomechanics can start to give rise to some symptoms.

If you are a runner and start to experience some symptoms, ease back on your training, make sure your running shoes are still in good condition and seek professional advice if your symptoms don’t settle. Sometimes a short break from training, some localised treatment combined with some exercises can be enough to get you back on track.

Here at Healthflex, we are lucky enough to have both disciplines within the practice who work alongside our team of experienced physiotherapists. Our clinicians can be consulted by appointment by contacting a member of our reception team and full details of our services can be seen on our website at www.healthflex.co.uk
