Welcome

Keynote:

Sir Tom FarmerFounder of Kwik-Fit

Sir Tom Farmer founded the colossal car servicing and repair company Kwik-Fit in Edinburgh in 1971. He built the brand from the ground up, from which he resigned after the sale to Ford in 1999. He now has a number of business interests which include property development and investments in new business start-ups, as well as 90% ownership of Hibernian FC. There is simply not a better man for you to admire and be inspired by.

Starting from humble beginnings, Sir Tom was one of seven siblings in a devoutly Catholic family. After starting as an apprentice in a garage, in 1964 and aged just 24, he left and founded his own tyre retailing business, which he sold in 1969 for £450,000. But this was to be merely the start of his illustrious career…

Sir Tom then ‘retired’ to the United States, but quickly realised that he needed a further challenge in his life, resulting in a return to Edinburgh. Using the American methods that he’d learnt during his brief spell away, Sir Tom Farmer founded the Kwik-Fit chain of garages in 1971. The firm grew quickly, mainly through acquisition, including opening in the Netherlands in 1975. After building the chain to become the world’s largest independent tyre and automotive repair specialists with over 2,000 centres operating in 18 different countries, Sir Tom sold the firm to Ford in 1999 for more than £1 billion. His present appointments include; Honorary President – Young Enterprise Scotland; Honorary President of the Entrepreneurial Exchange; Deputy Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh and Non-executive Director of Scottish Power.

In March 2007, he was appointed founding Chancellor of Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.

Whilst his list of accolades tells its own story:_ Knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1997_ Named Scottish Businessman of the Year in 1989. _First Scot to be awarded the prestigious Andrew Carnegie Medal for philanthropy._ Knight Commander with Star of the Order of St. Gregory the Great

It is said that, on average, you will remember 30% of what you hear in a day – if you can choose which 30% you do remember, make sure it is what Sir Tom Farmer teaches you. This seminar is not to be missed.

JasonRichelson

Jason Richelson Co-founder and Chief StrategyOfficer of ShopKeepJason Richelson has been a busy man. He’s worked in finance on Wall Street, as a software analyst at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and founded 3 companies prior to ShopKeep; one of which Jason attributes his success today at the helm of a 10,000-customer, 100-employee software company. It all started in 2004, when Jason opened a wine store in Brooklyn, New York. Over the next few years, as one store grew into four as he added a second location, a grocery store and a coffee shop, keeping track of a seven million dollar business, 70 employees, sales and inventory became increasingly important and more complicated.

At the time, Jason used a traditional point of sale system from a large software company and regularly experienced a considerable amount of technological problems. In 2008 while on vacation, the stores’ server crashed and Jason had to essentially close all of the stores indefinitely. As soon as he returned, Jason attempted to acquire a cloud-based point of sale system, but he couldn’t find anything. ShopKeep was born that day. “At ShopKeep, everything we do is about helping small businesses succeed.”

With a focus on bringing start-up grounded, lean innovation to the world of local business, Jason explains the tools he used and the metrics he measured to run an efficient, fast-growth enterprise.

Ajmal MushtaqAjmal Mushtaq is the UK’s leading authority on restaurants and takeaways. He writes for many of the UK’s leading trade magazines and is a regular feature on television / news for his expert views.

He has three degrees from the University of Glasgow - Law (LLb), Corporate Finance (MFin) and Management Accounting (MAcc).

In this seminar you will be given practical tips how to grow your business by 1000% using practical insights & examples from the multi-award winning Mushtaqs restaurant and takeaway. His presentation style is fast, fun and informative –this is a must attend seminar!

Ruaridh Macdonald Deputy Chief Executive of Macdonald Hotels and Resorts

The company was formed in 1990, by Ruaridh’s father, Donald Macdonald. They started out with two hotels in Scotland and rapidly expanded. Now, they are the UK’s largest privately-owned hotel group, operating 45 hotels across the UK and 10 resorts throughout the UK and Spain, with just over 4000 staff and 4500 hotel rooms.

Ruaridh’s keen interest in food, which is incidentally of massive importance to the Macdonald’s hotel group, led him to study agriculture at Aberdeen University. After a year in industry at a quality red meat specialist, Ruaridh went back to Aberdeen to study Marketing and Business Studies. After a few very successful stints in the marketing departments of a handful of different companies, he finally found his way back to his family’s business. “I always knew at some point I’d come into the hotel industry”, he states.

Ruaridh Macdonald’s first role in the business in 2003 was operations director for Macdonald Aviemore Resort, which the company was just starting to develop. From here, he rose through the ranks and became Operations Director two years ago, and now oversees 50% of the group’s hotels. He now also sits on the Board of Trustees for HIT Scotland.

Ten years ago, how would you have tempted Jane to buy your products / use your service? TV? Radio? Print ads? All of which can be expensive. But now it is 2015, Jane is sat there on her smartphone -just a simple tweet or small Pay-Per-Click campaign away. You are able to directly communicate with her, and whoever else you’d like! Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane aren’t the only ones on Social Media or using Internet Marketing- your competitors are too. And if you don’t want to be left behind, you have to fully embrace it.

These high energy sessions are designed to introduce the concepts of Social Networking and Internet Marketing to people who may be resistant to it or feel they don’t understand it! Our interactive Workshops are designed to shed some light on making the most of this marketing medium. By the end of the show, you could be teaching those teenagers a thing or two!

You can also get involved at the event; there will be a large screen displaying a Twitter feed throughout. It will be packed full of your comments, as well as any updates of seminars/workshops/features, offers from exhibitors and general show info.
