I am honored to serve as your chair of the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees. We have a diverse board representing an even more diverse Chamber membership – including retail stores, professional service providers, the hospitality industry, nonprofits and government. Our board and staff are energetic, creative and motivated to find new opportuni-ties for the Chamber, its members and the community as a whole.

The UA Chamber is unique because it is not focused solely on business. Our Chamber members and leaders care not only about the UA business climate but also about the quality of life for all UA-area residents. We want to encourage more people to live, work, shop and invest in UA. That is why the Chamber and its business members value their strong partnership with the City, the schools and area civic associations.

While the Chamber’s divisions and committees pursue many initiatives, its activities are primarily fo-cused on three areas: providing resources to its members, serving the UA community as a whole and advocating for business interests. Your Chamber board remains committed to all of these areas, but this year, we will have a more concentrated focus on improving services to Chamber members. Our goal is simple: if a Chamber member needs help with an issue, its first call should be to the Chamber office. We have invaluable resources available to us, and we are committed to making those resources the most prized privilege of membership in one of the region’s best chambers of commerce.

is the UA Chamber rebranding itself?Yes. Seven or eight years ago, under the

direction of then-board chair Rob Radcliff, the board of directors voted to hire Cathi Hight to assist it with the Chamber’s strategic plan. Hight is president of Hight Performance Group and provides realignment strategies that help associations manage constant change, and effectively communicate the value of membership.

Since then, the chamber has been retool-ing and adding new products and services – and even hired a new president since then.

in what ways is the chamber changing its brand?

We hope to be better able to answer that question by the end of 2014. I can tell you where we are to date in our process to define our 2014 Action Plan, and share a bit more re-garding the most recent changes made to our organizational structure and chart at this time.

For one thing, we are in the process of forging a partnership with Economic & Community Development Institute. ECDI is a 501(C)3 nonprofit economic develop-ment organization, a U.S. Small Business Administration intermediary microlender serving the entire state of Ohio, and U.S. Treasury designated Community Develop-ment Financial Institution with a mission of investing in people to create measurable and enduring social and economic change. ECDI addresses the needs of aspiring and estab-lished entrepreneurs in the creation and ex-pansion of their businesses via loans of up to $350,000. Steve Fireman, president and general counsel of ECDI joined our board earlier this year.

This wonderful relationship between UA chamber and ECDI will provide essential business services to all UA chamber mem-

bers as well as providing them access to funding opportunities to grow their busi-nesses. Among other benefits, we hope to offer workshops and seminars in coopera-tion with ECDI that will provide a leg-up to our retail members.

What is driving the change?The Upper Arlington Area Chamber of

Commerce wants to be the “Champion of Commerce.” We have an innovation-minded board of directors willing to make signifi-cant contributions to better serve the area businesses as well as the Upper Arlington community. We’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the best men and women leaders in this area these past six years. Through this rebranding process, we hope to better address our offering gaps, expand services and find additional opportunities in this ever-changing marketplace to better serve our members.

When most people think of a brand or of a rebrand, the first things that come to mind are a logo, a tagline, a color scheme or a motto. All of these are representations of an organization, but a brand has its roots in the perception and not in the representation. So when we focus on re-branding the Chamber, we will focus on remaking the perception of the Chamber and the value it brings to its members and to everyone in the city. We will create, remake and re-introduce pro-grams in ways that make it easy for people to rapidly perceive value and make it easy for people to support what we do.

In the ever-changing business climate, it is critical, for members’ survival and growth, that the Chamber provides established busi-nesses with ongoing technical assistance as well as sound business resources to ensure their businesses’ success. ECDI has the

capacity to connect our chamber members by providing valuable services to our en-trepreneurs and small businesses, includ-ing small business development training, one-on-one technical assistance, industry specific training and access to new markets. In addition, valuable traditional lenders such as PNC Bank, The Arlington Bank, FC Bank and other banks have provided sound credit and non-credit services in their roles to help drive business growth.

Our rebranding effort, therefore, will take the form of a strong alignment with how we act, what we build together and what we deliver – along with what we say (represen-tation) about all this.

What did the chamber’s most recent rebranding entail?

The chamber expanded its reach to in-clude serving the Upper Arlington “area businesses.” The Upper Arlington Chamber was incorporated in 1977. Today, 30 percent of our chamber members reside outside the Upper Arlington border.

Aside from marketing or a possible change in motto, what does this rebranding entail?

A recent case study found that rebranding often can be traced to one or more of these fac-tors: new CEO, new strategic plan, perceived weakness, an imminent chamber anniversary or willingness to gamble on a big idea.

Rebranding offers a person such as my-self, hired to lead the organization in part-nership with those individuals who serve as the board trustees, to put a stake in the ground and to mark our progress toward new and existing mission-critical goals and established initiatives.

how will this improve either the chamber’s visibility or the services it provides to the area businesses and/or the community?

We all know in today’s marketplace you need more than just a great product or service;

the ChamberChAmbers of CommerCe are uniquely named business organizations thanks to the French, who first recorded the phrase “chamber de commerce” in 1599, says chamber historian Chris Mead. In this Q&A, I look to the future of Upper Arlington’s Chamber and share the ways it is positioning itself to serve the community for years to come.

Rebranding


you need to make sure people also know about your great product or service. For the Chamber of Commerce, that means getting as much information out there as possible and listening to our members and non-members. We then need to let businesses know who we are, what we do, how we benefit the local business com-munity and why area businesses should invest their hard-earned cash to be part of our Chamber. Our goal is to showcase all of the member benefits in a way that every business can see the high return on their investment and call their Chamber first for all of their business needs.

The benefits provided by partnering with ECDI will give our Chamber mem-bers access to valuable programs that will address their unique business needs. The Women’s Business Center of Ohio, powered by ECDI, provides valuable resources to aspiring women entrepre-neurs. WBC members have access to free core business classes and one-on-one business counseling as well as access to a growing network of other driven and determined women entrepreneurs. When bringing your business the UAACC and to ECDI, the options are endless.

how, if at all, will this campaign impact members or potential members? Will membership fees be altered and, if so, in what way?

We plan to grow our membership by adding 100 new members while increas-ing member retention. Several years ago, we spent a great deal of time do-ing research, studying our membership, conducting focus groups and financial forecasting to determine what dues struc-ture would best serve the Chamber, but most importantly our members. Cur-rently, members have the opportunity to pick and choose the level investment that best suits their needs, while offering them the greatest return on their investment.

We are a very forward-thinking cham-ber, offering a tier benefit dues structure rather than an employee-based model dues structure.

Are you seeking new/different kinds of members and, if so, how will they be different?

Yes, we hope to attract more members to expand our current business base as well as businesses that wish to locate here to serve the demands of our ever-changing community.

When will the rebranding be rolled out?

Most likely, the rebranding will be rolled out in increments as we realign our new and existing initiatives with our message.

how will it be rolled out?That is yet to be determined as we are

just making the decision to re-invest in our organization on behalf of our membership.

how much is the chamber investing in this campaign?

Once again, I can share more detail re-garding that investment once we get under-way, and have the landscape mapped out better to know what we can accomplish.

how will it improve the chamber and or its services?

We believe our brand is our promise we make to our community and the area businesses we serve, to provide resourc-es that sustain and help them grow, and by being a partner and leader in creating a prosperous community. We will be fo-cused on helping area businesses grow their revenue, decrease costs, or improve their operations and efficiency. We want everyone to recognize not only our name and logo, but also what we stand for and the key role we play in health of local area commerce. We will be the Champion of Commerce for the Upper Arlington area.

Taste of UA Committee 2014The Chamber’s largest annual event is the Taste of Upper Arlington.
