She was in tears. I asked her to tell me how we could help. She told me how she was behind on her rent and the landlord was threatening to evict her and her two children. She was not able to buy her kids any Christmas presents but was counting on help from the Last Minute Toy Store at 61st Avenue UMC. But no amount of toys would help if she and her children were homeless on Christmas morning. So, I told her about a wonderful organization that provides rental assistance in Davidson County - The Rooftop Foundation. I submitted an application for her and she was approved for $300 in assistance. This grant helped bridge her financial need and her family was able to celebrate Christmas morning in their own home. This is exactly why Rooftop exists. Every day the agency brings hope to those who are at risk of losing their homes due to unexpected financial hardships. The greatest form of homelessness assistance is to help prevent homelessness in the first place. I am proud that Belle Meade is a partnering church with Rooftop and I am proud to be able to serve on the Board of Directors. I believe this type of work speaks to the heart of Christ’s ministry and to how we as Christians are to be in service to the “least of these.” On Thursday, January 26, Rooftop will hold a very important fundraiser called “Up on the Roof”. This event will generate a majority of funds used to provide rental assistance beyond the church partnerships. It will be held from 6:30 - 8:30pm atop the Terrazzo Building at 700 12th Avenue South in The Gulch. We at Belle Meade UMC can help with this fundraiser and have a wonderful night at the same time. There will be food, drinks, entertainment, and wonderful silent auction gifts. Tickets are $25/individual or $45/patron (special recognition for extra gift) and can be purchased through the website: www.rooftopnashville.org or by calling Danny in the church office: 615- 352-6210. This is a great way for us to become directly involved with a ministry and agency in Nashville that is making a difference in homeless prevention. I hope to see many of you there. Also, BMUMC is sponsoring a basket with the theme “Family Entertainment”. If you can contribute to the basket or help put it together, please contact Danny. Possible items needed: board games, outside games, gaming sys- tems, tickets to Titans/Predators/TPAC, movie gift certificates, dinner packages, etc. Yours, Sunday Worship Schedule 8:30 am - Praise Service in the Chapel 8:45 am - Holy Communion in the Sanctuary 9:15 am - 10:15 am Sunday School for all ages 10:30 am - Worship Service in the Sanctuary Church Offices Closed Martin Luther King, Jr. Day The church’s offices will be closed on Monday, January 16 th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Women’s Friday Morning Bible Study Begins Friday, January 13th

We will be kicking off the new year with Beth Moore’s newest study, James: Mercy Triumphs. This 8-week study begins on Friday, January 13, from 10:00-12:00 noon. We will see how the skeptic James, Jesus’ own brother, went from an unbe-liever into a disciple after glimpsing the resurrected Savior, and examine the book of James, which more closely resembles Proverbs than any other in the New Testament. If you would like to have a workbook on hold for you, please rsvp to Leigh Johnson (354-1033), [email protected] or Harriet Jordan (390-8219). We hope you will join us!

Men’s Prayer Breakfast and Local Service ProjectsSaturday, January 28th

All men are invited to join us Saturday January 28th at 7:30 am for a breakfast at the church. This will include a time of prayer and then we will go out into the community to serve others. Various projects helping various non-profits/ministries will be scheduled. We will leave the church in smaller groups and projects will last 3-4 hours. It is going to be a great morning to meet other men in the church, serve oth-ers, and fellowship with one another. More information about the projects will be provided soon. RSVP by Monday January 22nd to Jeff McCormick, 615.678.9082 or [email protected] OR to Casey Barnes, 615.828.1330 or [email protected].

Meet Mayra Garcia & Support Children in Guatemala

Many youth and adults from our church are returning to Guatemala this summer, July 7 - 14th, to serve children and families through the Kairos school. The Kairos school’s mission is to raise Christian leaders and give children an education and a future they might not have otherwise. At the end of this month, you will have the opportunity to learn first hand about this mission and help support these children through providing $10 to purchase a pencil pouch and school supplies.

On Saturday January 28th, from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, those going on our mission trip to Guatemala - and anyone else who wants to learn more about the mission of the Kairos school, will meet at Morgan and Terrie Crawford’s house for an open house/mission team meeting. You are invited to attend. Please RSVP by Wednesday January 25th to Jeff McCormick, 678-9082 or [email protected] so that we will have enough food for everyone.

On Sunday January 29th, the entire congregation is invited to support the children of Guatemala through the purchase of school supplies. There are 85 children in the school and we need your help to provide a pencil pouch full of school supplies for each child. $10 will provide the pouch and many of the supplies each child needs. In return, you will receive a picture of your ‘child’ similar to the one below. We also ask that you write a note to your ‘child.’

At 9:15 am during the Sunday School hour, Mayra Garcia will share with us about the Kairos school in Guatemala. You will hear about the vision of the school, the hopes and prayers for the school, and the amazing ways God is working through each child in the school.

During the 10:30 Worship, Mayra Garcia along with a Belle Meade youth will share during the ministry moment.

In the Narthex following the 10:30 Worship, you may donate $10 to fill the pencil pouches filled with supplies. You will receive a picture of the child you are helping, and we ask that you write a note or prayer for your child that they will receive along with the supplies.

If you cannot attend church on January 29th but still want to support a child, please send in a check for $10 made out to the church and marked “Kairos school sup-plies”. Contact Jeff McCormick, 678-9082 or [email protected] if you have questions or want more information.
