The 2011 Pilot Report

Volume IV

Dear Clients,

This marks the fourth year I have compiled a Pilot Report. This year, I focus on two

main categories:

1. Demographics of Pilot Series Regular and Recurring Roles

2. Booking Stratification of Named and Known Actors.

A note on methodology: I used the following information sources (actual pilot

scripts, listing of breakdowns and IMDB analysis) to form the basis of my

examination. I also focused on only those pilots that were „green lit‟ for shoot.

However, due to the changing nature of scripts and the overall pilot process, this

data will not be 100% accurate. It should, however, give us a good basis for

analyzing the state of the 2011 Pilots season.

As with previous reports, feel free to send along to others who may find this

information interesting.

Genuinely,

James J. Jones

2011 PILOT SEASON: an overview

In 2011, Hollywood‟s traditional pilot season was robust in comparison to the last

three years. There were 92 listed and „green lit for shoot‟ pilots this season. From

these shows, there were 529 series regulars and 84 significant series recurring

roles. All together there were 613 major roles in Pilots in 2011.

PART ONE: Demographics

2011 DEMOGRAPHICS – by gender/by role

Of all the series regular and series recurring roles, here is the demographic

breakdown by gender and age:

How to use: if you are a male actor in the 20-29 year old age range, you can

conclude that of all the roles listed, 73 were in your age range or 11.9% of all

roles.

PART TWO: Stratification

2011 PILOT SEASON – an overview

In the 2011 Pilot Season, we saw an additional (please see my 2009 and 2010

reports at http://www.thepremiertalentgroup.com/media) escalation in the number of

significant „named‟ actors and „known‟ actors.

In 2010, there was a strong movement toward booking actors traditionally known as

film stars (such as Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Bill Pullman, Forrest Whitaker,

Claire Forlani, Charles Dutton, Brian Keith, Sam Shepard, Dermot Mulroney, Tom

Selleck, Nick Nolte, Mary Steenburgen, Donnie Walhberg, Skeet Ulrich, etc.).

In 2011, while there was still a number of the more traditional “film stars‟ in the

mix (such as Ashley Judd, Angela Bassett, Maria Bello, Jim Caviezel, Minnie

Driver, Ethan Hawke, Elizabeth Hurley, Jessica Lange, Sam Neill, etc) there was a

strong movement of booking former Series Regulars from previous TV shows.

2011 PILOT SEASON – definitions

While this is a somewhat subjective analysis, I am attempting to delineate two

categories of actors: NAMED and KNOWN.

I define NAMED actors as those who are traditionally known as star actors who

have a significant “Q”* score. I delineate KNOWN actors as those who have a lower

“Q” score, but have been series regulars in significant shows or leading roles in

large feature films.

*The Q Score is a measurement of the familiarity and appeal of a celebrity.

For example:

NAMED – HIGH “Q” SCORE - Ashley Judd, Ethan Hawke, Tim Allen, Michael

Chiklis, Kelsey Grammar, Minnie Driver and Donald and Keifer Sutherland.

KNOWN – LOW “Q” SCORE – Poppy Montgomery (SR-Without a Trace-160 Eps.),

Steve Harris (SR-The Practice-167 Eps); Scott Foley (SR-The Unit-69 Eps); Eddie

Cibrian (SR-3rd Watch-92 Eps;CSI:Miami-25 Eps); Jamie Bamber (SR-Battlestar

Galactica-73 Eps.); Enrique Murciano (SR-Without a Trace-160 Eps); Danny Pino

(SR – Cold Case – 151 Eps).

**PLEASE SEE APPENDIX FOR FULL LISTING OF BOOKED ACTORS**

Page 6: The 2011 Pilot Report Volume IV

2011 PILOT SEASON –stratification by the numbers

Of the 529 Series Regular Roles (assuming that named and known actors aren‟t

doing recurring roles):

112 or 21.2% – Went to NAMED ACTORS

262 or 49.5% - Went to KNOWN ACTORS

374 or 70.7% - WEN T TO NAMED AND KNOWN ACTORS

*Of the additional 27.3% of the bookings, almost all of them had significant credits

as series recurring actors or series regulars in shows that did not last long. Only 7

bookings (2.0%) would be considered truly developmental received series regular

roles, and many of these went to the under 18 category.

In short,

21.2% of series regular‟s roles went to bonafide star names

49.5% of series regulars went to former series regulars of major shows

27.3% of series regular roles went to heavy working actors with numerous

series recurring roles and/or series regular roles of shows that did not last.

2.0% of series regular roles went to true developmental actors.

2011 Pilot Season – other interesting facts

This year, 87% of all Pilots filed with AFTRA jurisdiction. That marks three

straight years where AFTRA has dominated Pilot Shoots.

As of April 18th, Variety was reporting that confirmed Pilot Shoots will occur in:

United States

48 – Los Angeles

11 – New York (Unt. Susannah Grant, Over & Under, Unt. Redlich/Belluchi, Prime

Suspects, Smash, Weekend at Bellevue, Georgetown, Persons of Interest,

Ringer, Rookies and Pan Am)

4 – Florida (Bad Mom, Magic City, The Finder, Charlie‟s Angels)

4 – Illinois (Cooper and Stone; Boss, Playboy)

2 – Georgia (Hail Mary, Partners)

2 – New Mexico (Reconstruction, Longmire)

Page 7: The 2011 Pilot Report Volume IV

2 – North Carolina (Revenge; Hart of Dixie)

1 – Oregon (Grimm)

1 – Louisiana (Wild Card)

1 – Texas (Good Christian Bitches)

1 – Pennsylvania (Locke and Key)

Outside of the United States

5 – Vancouver, Canada (17th Precinct, Secret Circle, Alcatraz, Heavenly and Once

Upon a Time)

2 – Toronto, Canada (Awakening, Poe)

1 – Prague/Rome/Vienna (Missing)

1 – Puerto Rico (The River)

1 – Montreal, Canada (Identity)

SILVER LINING – sowing the seeds

This section is for the working and developmental actor who might look at this

information and feel that all is hopeless. While you may have lost a series role to a

„named‟ or „known‟ actor, you undoubtedly left a great impression. You have sown a

seed with those decision makers who will certainly remember you when it comes to

guest stars, series recurs and next year‟s series regular roles.

So, DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED … remember the path of the TV/FILM actor is

one of a marathon not a sprint…
