The family and friends of Dr. Bobby R. Thornton, a former FBC ministerial staff member.

July 27th was a busy, busy day for the preteens at First Baptist Rome! Starting at 8 o’clock in the morning (7 o’clock Alabama time) twelve 5th-8th grade Romans boarded a bus in the parking lot of FBC Rome, Georgia and headed to Huntsville, Alabama for a fun-filled day. The preteens toured the Space and Rocket Center, ate at Tenders (which my kids absolutely loved and said was ten times better than Rome’s Zaxby’s), and did mission work at Lakewood Elementary with the whole FBC Huntsville youth group. The two groups were mixed together working as one body of Christ. It was such an awesome sight. We painted, cleaned bathrooms, washed dozens of windows (multiple times), and did a lot of yard work while also forming priceless relationships. One of my girls came up to me and said, “Bethany! These Huntsville people are so awesome! Juliana likes Justin Beiber too!” Afterwards I was told all sorts of stories and jokes that happened between the Rome and Huntsville participants.

After working at Lakewood, we ventured to the church and my kids were completely awestruck by the magnitude of FBC’s building with the steeple and mural of Jesus in the solar system. Their jaws just dropped in amazement. We listened to a profound lesson about the faith Paul talks about in Galatians and then we played a good ole game of hide and seek. My Rome boys ate that up. They live to play hide and seek.

It is safe to say that after learning about space, eating chicken stripes that exceed what you can get at Zaxby’s, doing outstanding mission work while forming friendships, and learning about faith with a sprinkle of hide and seek, the day was an experience no one will forget.

Summer is almost over. I know the weather is so hot that statement seems to make no sense. However, school is soon to start and our new church year is about to begin.
