“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from
it.” Proverbs 22:6 NIV
Sending your first child off to school can be scary for everyone. As a parent, try to put your fears aside and look for the positives: your child is beginning
an adventure that will teach him many new things. Before school starts, go to the school and arrange a tour if
possible to take the fear out of the new surroundings. Remind him/her that others will be nervous about school
and there will be many new friends to meet. Talk about the exciting things he/she will be doing during the school day and make it an adventure for both of you. If you have worries about his/her health, be sure to meet with the school
nurse to discuss any health conditions or medications that might impact the day.
Soon both of you will be looking forward to hearing about each other’s day.

Brittany Riddle preaching
FIRST THOUGHTSDavid Hull, Pastor
Summer is almost over. I know the weather is so hot that statement seems to make no sense. However, school is soon to start and our new church year is about to begin. Foundations for Life Sunday night programs will begin on August 14 and the full Wednesday night schedule of opportunities will start on August 17. Right now we are planning and training in preparation for these new beginnings.
But we do have one more Sunday of “summer” on August 7 before the fall schedule begins. I want to invite you to a special Sunday night worship and fellowship event that will bring the summer to a close. In our evening worship at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel, Brittany Riddle will be preaching for us. She is a native of Louisville, KY (now that is a good thing!) and is a graduate of Furman University (with a wife and a daughter who also graduated from Furman, there is another good thing) and most recently she graduated from the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (since I chair the Board of Trustees for the school, I must add that as a good thing to my list). But none of these connections are the reason for her preaching on Sunday night. For three years at BTSR she has received the Ralph Langley Preaching Scholarship that is provided by our church. This is a full scholarship given in honor of our Pastor Emeritus. She has been an outstanding student in seminary and has a promising ministry before her as she seeks a place of service. We look forward to the opportunity to have Brittany lead us this Sunday night.
An ice cream fellowship seems to be a good way to conclude the summer Sunday nights. Jane and I would love to invite you to our house for ice cream. Folks from the church are providing the dessert for us to enjoy. We hope that you can come over right after the worship service and enjoy a time of warm (yes, even hot) fellowship throughout the house and yard. Directions to our house will be provided at the worship service.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday morning as we gather around the Lord’s Table and on Sunday night as we congregate around the ice cream churn.

July 27th was a busy, busy day for the preteens at First Baptist Rome! Starting at 8 o’clock in the morning (7 o’clock Alabama time) twelve 5th-8th grade Romans boarded a bus in the parking lot of FBC Rome, Georgia and headed to Huntsville, Alabama for a fun-filled day. The preteens toured the Space and Rocket Center, ate at Tenders (which my kids absolutely loved and said was ten times better than Rome’s Zaxby’s), and did mission work at Lakewood Elementary with the whole FBC Huntsville youth group. The two groups were mixed together working as one body of Christ. It was such an awesome sight. We painted, cleaned bathrooms, washed dozens of windows (multiple times), and did a lot of yard work while also forming priceless relationships. One of my girls came up to me and said, “Bethany! These Huntsville people are so awesome! Juliana likes Justin Beiber too!” Afterwards I was told all sorts of stories and jokes that happened between the Rome and Huntsville participants.
After working at Lakewood, we ventured to the church and my kids were completely awestruck by the magnitude of FBC’s building with the steeple and mural of Jesus in the solar system. Their jaws just dropped in amazement. We listened to a profound lesson about the faith Paul talks about in Galatians and then we played a good ole game of hide and seek. My Rome boys ate that up. They live to play hide and seek.
It is safe to say that after learning about space, eating chicken stripes that exceed what you can get at Zaxby’s, doing outstanding mission work while forming friendships, and learning about faith with a sprinkle of hide and seek, the day was an experience no one will forget.
