Question: I am 17 years old and worked for a man on his farm last
summer to make some extra money. I also had a night time summer job at
a local restaurant. After a month he said he had run into some hard times
and would be a little slow on my pay (he had paid on time each week). He
begged me to continue to work, because he had a lot of hay to put in and it
was a wet summer, so I agreed. I worked the extra month (4 weeks, 6 days
a week, 7 hrs. a day). He was paying me $7.50 an hour. I figure that he
owes me $1,260 for the work. I need the money for school and stuff. It has
been 6 months. I have contacted him and he agreed to give me $300 but
can’t pay the rest for a while. What can I do?
Answer: You are a minor and he has taken advantage of your good will
and broken the law. Have your dad contact him and explain that you
expect to be paid now. You have bent over backwards for this fellow and
he continues to use you. If he doesn’t pay you , go see the county attorney
and have him send the man a forceful letter. That should do the trick.
I don’t expect that you will be helping this man again but remember
that deadbeats are every where. You should be proud of yourself for being
a good sport and showing some compassion, but a little goes a long way
and its time to pay the piper (which is you). Don’t let this sour your work
ethic, keep up the good work and you will go far in life. I am sure that
your parents are very proud of the way you have handled this ornery man
and this bad situation. Good Luck
Here’s a reminder to set your clock
forward for Daylight Savings Time
Sunday, March 8th, 2020.
You may not even need this reminder, unless you
have wall clocks in your house, because most devices
are so smart these days, they just automatically change themselves once the time change
goes in to effect. Don’t you miss those days of accidentally sleeping too late the following
Monday because you forgot to update your clock on the nightstand? Yeah, I don’t miss
that either.
Have you ever wondered why it’s called “daylight savings”? Essentially, we change our
clocks as a way of “saving” or making better use of natural daylight. During daylight
savings time clocks are set an hour ahead, so that the sun rises later in the morning & sets
later in the evening. We do the opposite in the fall. Contrary to popular belief, Daylight
savings Time was not enacted to benefit farmers, but rather as a wartime conservation
effort during World War I.
One of the best things about Daylight Savings time is leaving work when the sun is still
out. Some people say it saves energy during the spring & summer months, because more
people may be outside in the evening & not using artificial light at home. Other people
(like me) love the long summer evenings & feel safer when there is still light. There are
people who also complain about the drawbacks of springing ahead, as it causes you to lose
an hour of sleep or an hour of productivity, and a rise in traffic accidents due to drowsy
driving during the first few days after the spring time change.
Here are some tips for handling the time change:
Get extra sleep. To compensate for losing that precious hour of shut-eye, go to bed an
hour earlier every night to ease yourself into the time change, so you’ll be less likely to be
forced to drive sleep-deprived.
Choose appropriate light to signal your body. The brightness of your environment af-
fects your sleep cycle. Get up early & let in the sunlight to wake yourself up. Then, make
sure your lights at home are dim when you want to signal to your body that it’s time to go
to sleep to make sure you fall asleep at a good time. This also means you should not stare
at a bright computer screen right before bed.
Shift your routine. When preparing to spring forward, limit caffeine & alcohol in the
hours leading up to bedtime. If you do a daily workout, make sure it’s not late in the
evening or you may find it difficult to go to sleep since your body is not used to the earlier
bedtime.

DiMaggio
A guy has a talking dog, so he brings it to a talent scout. "This
dog can speak English," he claims to the unimpressed agent.
The guy says to the dog, "What's on the top of a house?"
"Roof!" the dog replies.
"Oh, come on..." the talent agent responds. "All dogs go 'roof'."
"No, wait," the guy says. He asks the dog, "What does
sandpaper feel like?" "Rough!" the dog answers.
The talent agent gives a condescending stare. He is losing his
patience.
"No, hang on," the guy says. "This one will amaze you." He turns and asks the
dog: "Who, in your opinion, was the greatest baseball player of all time?"
"Ruth!" barks the dog.
And the talent scout, having seen enough, boots them out of his office and onto
the street.
The dog then turns to the guy and says, "Maybe I shoulda said DiMaggio?"

Kissing the Blarney Stone
Facts About the Blarney Stone
The location of the Blarney Stone is in the
village of Blarney about 5 miles northwest of
Cork, Ireland. The Blarney Stone is a block of
bluestone built into the battlements of Blarney
Castle. The Blarney castle and stone are one
of the most popular tourist sites in Ireland,
attracting millions of visitors from around the
world who wish to tour the castle & kiss the
stone. According to legend, kissing the stone
endows the kisser with the gift of gab,
eloquence or skill at flattery. The word blarney has come to mean clever, flattering, or
coaxing talk. The name of the village Blarney is derived from the Irish word An blarna
meaning 'the plain'.
History of the Blarney Stone
The most commonly accepted story of the stone is that, in gratitude for Irish support at
the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 (a Scottish defeat of the English), Robert the Bruce
gave a portion of the stone to Cormac McCarthy, King of Munster. Installed at Cormac
McCarthy’s stronghold, Blarney Castle, it became known as the Blarney Stone. A cen-
tury later, in 1446, King Dermot McCarthy then installed the stone in an enlarged castle
he constructed.
During the time of Queen Elizabeth I, Dermot McCarthy, the ruler of the castle, was
required to surrender his fortress to the Queen as proof of his loyalty. He said he would
be delighted to do so, but something always happened at the last moment to prevent his
surrender. His excuses became so frequent that the official who had been demanding the
castle in the name of the Queen became a joke at the Court. Once, when the eloquent
excuses of McCarthy were repeated to the Queen, she said "Odds bodikins, more Blarney
talk!" The term Blarney has thus come to mean 'the ability to influence and coax with fair
words & soft speech without giving offense'.
Kissing the Blarney Stone
Kissing the stone is for some people a difficult physical feat. In past times, to kiss the
Stone people were hung by their heels over the edge of the parapet. One day a pilgrim
broke from the grasp of his friends & went hurtling downward to certain death. Since
that time the stone has been kissed by another method. First, you sit with your back
towards the stone & then someone sits upon your legs or firmly holds your feet. Next,
leaning far back & downward into the abyss while grasping the iron rails, you lower
yourself until your head is even with the stone to be kissed.

This Week: Blarney Castle ~ Cork, Ireland
Blarney Castle Estate Situated 8 km from Cork city, this historic castle is most famous for the Blarney Stone,
which has the traditional power of conferring eloquence on all who kiss it. Blarney Castle
is the third structure to have been erected on this site. In the 10th century there was a
wooden hunting lodge and in 1210 this was replaced by a stone structure. This building
was demolished for the foundation of the third castle built by Cormac McCartney in 1446.
History of Blarney Castle:
Cormac McCarthy, King of Munster The lower walls are fifteen feet high, built
with an angle tower by the McCarthy’s of
Muskerry. It was subsequently occupied at one
time by Cormac McCarthy, King of Munster,
who is said to have supplied four thousand men
from Munster to supplement the forces of
Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in
1314.
Queen Elizabeth The Earl of Leicester was ordered by Queen Elizabeth to take possession of the castle.
Whenever he endeavored to negotiate, McCarthy always suggested a banquet or some
other form of delay, so that when the queen asked for progress reports, a long missive was
sent, at the end of which the castle remained untaken.
Cromwell’s General, Lord Broghill The castle was eventually captured by Cromwell’s general, Lord Broghill. However,
when his men entered the keep, he found only two old retainers, the main garrison having
fled by the underground caves situated below the battlements known as the Badgers Caves.
There are three passages, one to Cork, one to the lake and one seemingly to Kerry.
Sold to Sir James St. John Jefferyes in 1688 A subsequent owner of the estate spent a fortune in vain, endeavoring to drain the lake
at the bottom of which the famous plate was supposed to have been thrown. The estate
was forfeited by Donogh McCarthy, 4th Earl of Clancarthy, who supported James ll in the
Williamite Wars, and was passed to the Hollow Sword Blade Company who subsequently
sold it to Sir James St. John Jefferyes, Governor of Cork in 1688.
Owner/Manager The Colthurst Baronet of Ardrum in the county of Cork is a title in the Baronetcy of
Ireland. The current owner is Sir Charles Colthurst who lives in Blarney House, which was
built in 1874.
The main attraction for most visitors is to kiss the Blarney Stone. This involves climbing
to the top of the tower, lying on your back, reaching under the battlements and kissing the
stone above your head. The castle is open all year round from 9:00 until sunset, during the
summer there are conducted tours of the house. There is also a restaurant and gift shop.
