May 19, 2017 Welcome back, my friends, to the 16th Annual Robert F. Novins Memorial Golf Tournament & Reception being held again this year at Carsons Tavern and Stuart Yacht & Country Club in lovely Stuart, Florida. The proceeds from this event will benefit the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic in Stuart, so I ask you to please contribute in whatever way you can. Every little bit helps. Whether you’re here volunteering your time, making a monetary or gift donation, attending the evening reception or coming out to enjoy a day of golf, your efforts are greatly appreciated and will benefit many medically indigent residents in our area. Although we are not too serious about the level of play, we are extremely serious about the benefits this tournament confers upon our community. Today, I ask that you embrace the spirit of my Dad. Play your best, keep up with the pace and observe proper etiquette, but most importantly – enjoy the day! Enjoy being outside, enjoy conversation with old friends and enjoy meeting new ones. As always, you have my sincere appreciation. Carson Novins PS: Please come and enjoy the Preakness Stakes, Helicopter Ball Drop and Award Ceremony immediately following the golf. The Winners may even attend this year!
Volunteers in Medicine Clinic nominated Carson Novins and Beth Novins for the 2016 National Philanthropy Day Award for Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser – and they won! For the past 16 years, Carson and Beth, the dynamic brother-sister duo, have led their Golf for Life Committee and rallied friends, businesses, and the community, to raise nearly a million dollars for medical services on the Treasure Coast – all in honor of their father.
Both successful, local business owners, Carson and Beth have observed first-hand the gap between people who can afford health insurance, and people who are government assisted. Carson and Beth believe that by directing funds to VIM Clinic, they can help bridge this gap, and help their friends, neighbors, and fellow community members, who cannot afford health insurance, access the quality health care found at VIM Clinic.
With the help of generous volunteers and supporters, VIM Clinic is able to care for almost 1,000 adult legal residents at any given time, with an average of 50 patient visits a day. While VIM Clinic does not charge for its services, it is not a walk-in clinic. Patients pre-qualify by showing proof of income, Martin County residency, and lack of access to government assistance.
At VIM Clinic, 98 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to program services. This is possible because of the generosity of the entire community - from Martin Health System and Diagnostic Imaging Services, (absorbing over 4 million dollars a year in services), to volunteers, and individuals like yourselves, who participate in the Robert F. Novins Memorial Golf Tournament every year!
Thanks to you, VIM Clinic is able to practice the art of medicine, not the business of health care.

The 16th Annual
ROBERT F. NOVINS MEMORIAL
GOLF TOURNAMENT
Robert F. Novins was born on September 9, 1926, in Spring Lake, N.J. He lived the rest of his life in Toms River, N.J., where he married Irene Walsh in 1951. They had four children of whom Robert was very proud: Jeffrey Hartt, Landscape Architect; Beth Novins, Restaurateur; Allison Novins, Naturopathic Doctor; and Carson Novins, Tavern Tycoon.
Educated at the University of North Carolina and Rutgers Law School, Mr. Novins was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in November 1949, and soon became one of the state’s most prestigious lawyers. In June 1962, at the age of 35, Mr. Novins was appointed to the Bench by Gov. Richard J. Hughes, becoming the youngest judge in state history at the time. After distinguishing himself on the Bench, Mr. Novins decided to return to his true passion—the practice of law as a trial attorney.
Mr. Novins litigated a myriad of complex cases, appearing many times in the Appellate Division of the Superior Court and in the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Among the many cases he handled over the course of a 50-year career was Rova Farms v. Investors
Insurance Company. This case resulted in a landmark decision
creating a new concept in the relationship between the insured and their carriers, now widely adopted throughout the United States.
During his career, Mr. Novins was widely regarded as one of the top three trial attorneys in New Jersey. His professional and civic accomplishments are too numerous to list. His reputation as a fine lawyer and a gentleman was never questioned. His munificence to his friends and family was his greatest legacy.
Robert F. Novins was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on January 31, 2002, at his home in Stuart, Florida.
