Chairman’s Welcome

Travelling to Harbottle Show, you may notice the abundance of sheep in our area. The Coquet Valley is certainly sheep country and history tells us that sheep have been part of this area since before records began. Back in the 12th century the Monks of Memmerkirk kept sheep way up in the Cheviots beyond Kidland. The Cheviot Hills even gave their name to a breed of sheep from the area; the Cheviot, which can be seen in two guises as the North Country Cheviot, a larger bodied animal found inbye, and the South Country Cheviot, seen predominantly in the hills. As the economic backbone of the farming industry of the area, sheep are reflected within the Show itself. We have a wide variety of breeds in our Sheep Show, and the industrial section contains contain classes for fleeces and hand spun woollen yarn. This year our Show Stopper Cake theme is Sheep, so I hope there is plenty of inspiration there. However not everyone has a prize North Country Cheviot Gimmer to bring If you want to get involved there are plenty of other opportunities. From flowers to photography, leeks to lemon drizzle cake and patchwork to poetry, there’s something to suit all tastes. Though for some an afternoon in an idyllic setting is all that’s needed; with children’s sports, Cumberland Wrestling and Terrier Racing what more could you want? Tea and cake, yes well that’s available too along with so much more. If stepping back in time, slowing the pace down whilst letting the kids run free, is what you like, then this is the place for you. Come along, get involved, enjoy and relax. You’re all very welcome.

Mac Young Chairman

LIVE MUSIC

We have a tremendous show for you on the Music Stage this year. Starting of at 12:30pm with ‘Country Blue’ to get us all in the swing. Followed by a few popular jazzy numbers from ‘The Drake Stone Project’. Next a little Caribbean sunshine with the ‘CCC Steelband’. Then the marvellous voice of ‘Marianne Newstead’ and her band. And to finish a fantastic day of great music we have the wonderful ‘Hannah Lamb and Friends’. So get yourself down to the show this year and relax in the sun to a great afternoon’s entertainment.

Show News This year we have a variety of attractions, with our main demonstration provided by Joe Hipwell of Sealpin Gundogs. Joe trains and displays Springer and Cocker Spaniels and Labradors, and has recently displayed at the Royal Highland Show and Scottish Game Fair. Joe will perform two demonstrations, after which he will be available to talk to any dog owners who would like advice or further training. Also joining us will be soldiers of the Queens Own Yeomanry, who will be bringing along a Land Rover with some of their equipment. We also have some changes to our committee this year. John Common has stood down as Show President, a role he has had since 2013. John has been involved with Harbottle Show for many years, serving on the committee and then as treasurer, as well as hosting the show in the Oak Tree field. The committee would like to thank John for all his work and support over the years. Taking over as President will be Anne Dunn, who is retiring from running the Star Inn, in Harbottle. The Star Inn is affectionately known as Harbottle Show HQ, and Anne along with her husband Robert, when he was alive, supported the show in many ways.

Craft Tent

As usual the craft tent will host a range of fascinating demonstrations. Learn some new skills including, proggy mats, print making, woodwork, basket making and many others.
