The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evansWe LikeI really liked that I got a call from Mat Weber of 2Finger Jester fame informing me of a specialguest coming to the Reader’s Choice Awards thisyear. Bobby Dall, the bass player for 80’s phe-noms, Poison, had somehow decided to showup. I’m really not sure why, and as of this writing, the show hasn’t happened yet, so who knowswhat’s up with that. I guess if you got a ticket andwere there, you know.

Spring is waking up, The Cherry BlossomFestival is about to begin, it’s just the perfect timeto celebrate all the things we should be locallyproud of. Speaking of, word about a new grocerystore on College Street called Ocmulgee Tradershas me about as excited as I was when FreshMarket got here. The prices calmed me down

quite quickly in that place, but I think Steve Belland Co. have something a little different in mind. Ican’t wait to see just what it is.

As most of you know by now, my father suffersfrom Alzhiemers. Lately things have gotten prettyrough around the house, and while the family hasbeen through a lot, it did finally get bad enough formy brother and my mother to visit the folks at theAlzhimer’s Association of Central GA. They got meto come in a long time ago, but the resources theyoffer, and the support they gave my family wasinvaluable and I appreciate it so much. Karen andMott, and Linda, thanks Ya’ll.

A benefit for the Alzheimer's Association willbe coming up in May. The Dancing Stars of CentralGeorgia will take place May 12th at Macon's City

Auditorium. This popular fundraiser will be com-prised of 10 celebrity dancers paired with 10 pro-fessional dancers, all raising funds by gainingvotes. The dancers then come together to competein a one night gala dance competition. Thanks to all those wonderful people for helpingraise money for this cause.

Every year it surprises me just howmany people respond to ourReader’s Choice Award’s ballot.

When we’re young, and I was, not solong ago, we have this theory in ourhead that our community is like the peo-ple that we know. Or that it should be.Though that could be an ideal theory, itis usually not the case. This is definite-ly true with Macon. While many read-ers may believe that our publication ismainly distributed downtown, it’s not.

Most other areas of Macon havemore locations where you can pick up ourpaper than Downtown has. Now we ofcourse love and support downtown just asmuch as those ultra skinny stylish peoplehanging out on the sidewalks. I say thatto say this. People you will never know oreven hear of pay attention to the 11thHour. And nothing says that quite like theReader’s Choice Awards.

So when Roasted wins “Best NewRestaurant,” or Back City Woods wins“Best New Band” it’s because even peo-ple outside of their circles are payingattention and that is a good thing. Welike to think this publication plays a bigpart in that.

We get a lot of complaints whennominees come out about a certain band

not being ROCK enough to be nominat-ed or an artist not being ARTSY enoughto be nominated. Well, it’s just a reflec-tion of who we are as a city. So if youwon, be proud that your word is gettingout beyond the people you know, and ifyou didn’t, consider getting the wordout wider for next year.

Thanks to all the bands, nomineesand presenters that made last night spe-cial. I’m writing this before it happensso I don’t know the details yet...Congrats to the winners!

“Cotton Patch Gospel has been highly acclaimed by critics and the public alike. is award-winning drama is a leg-slappin’, toe’tappin’, hand-clappin’ hoe-down of a story that retells the Gospels of Matthew and John in the musical style of the South. In Cotton Patch Gospel, the far away places of Nazareth, Jerusalem and Bethlehem are brought closer to the cities of Atlanta and Valdosta, and Ty Ty. Jesus is born in Gaines-ville, Georgia. e music that brings this story to life was written by the late Harry Chapin, author of such classics as Cat’s in the Cradle, Taxi, and other hits. Chapin considered himself “born to write this musical.” (His own words.) e text comes from Clarence Jordan’s “e Cotton Patch Version of the Bible”.

OVERALL RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE

- THE DOWNTOWN GRILL -

FAVORITE LUNCH SPOT - BEST WAIT STAFF - BEST BURGER

- THE ROOKERY -

BEST NEW RESTAURANT

- ROASTED CAFE & LOUNGE -

The Rookery has been a downtown fixture since 1976. But when Chad Evans and Wes Griffith took over in 2009, it became an epicenter for Cherry St. With a gourmet list of burgers named after Macon’s notorious, a large craft beer selection and the friendliest waitstaff in town, our readers gave this place the respect it deserves.

Nick Rizkalla, owner of Roasted, opened its doors in October of 2011. “I felt there was a niche to fill in downtown Macon. A place where the music and artistic community could come and chill.” The coffee shop’s First Friday Art shows have been a great success and is a testament to his initial vision. Nick says, “There really is a great bit of artistic talent hiding in Macon!” Serving up organic coffees, fresh-made sandwiches and salads and their famous date shake, Roasted has a little something for everyone. Follow on Facebook or Twitter for updates.

Richie Jones and staff has snagged this top award in Macon dining for the second year in a row. With it’s rustic English charm, expansive wine selection and decadent prime cut Black Angus steaks, The Downtown Grill can proudly hang another gold record on their wall.

The Downtown Grill is located at 562 Mulberry Street Lane and is located between Mulberry Street and Cherry Street. Reservations are recommended.

MACON MIRACLE

I’ve maintained all along that public educationis the greatest challenge facing Macon andBibb County today. Businesses and compa-

nies looking to locate/relocate here are all tooeasily deterred by our forty-four per cent publichigh school graduation rate, stifling the econom-ic growth, development and prosperity of what isotherwise an extremely attractive region.

Since his arrival on our scene, I’ve had theprivilege of meeting with Superintendent RomainDallemand on several different occasions, and I’veconsistently found him to be thoughtful, engagingand even inspirational. Perhaps more important-ly, I have found him to be a very good listener whohas taken the initiative himself to seek out andmeet with a very diverse cross section of individu-als in our community.

We all ought to readily admit that much ofwhat we have been doing in our public schoolsjust isn’t producing the broad academic andgraduation results that we expect, and that thereis not a one among us who can realistically expectthese results to be any different ifwe continue doing the samethings over and over again.

Dr. Dallemand’s MaconMiracle is a significant departurefrom what we have known andexperienced in our classrooms in the past, andthis strategic plan is based in many respects andregards on innovative and successful educationprecedents here in the United States and aroundthe world. Macon Miracle deserves the opportu-nity to succeed, and that will only occur if weallow it the chance to do so.

CONSOLIDATIONThe legislation necessary as a prelude to the con-solidation of Macon, Payne City and Bibb

County has been introduced in the statelegislature by our local legislative delegation. Itspassage under the gold dome in Atlanta is likely, and that will lead to a July referendum that willgive all of the citizens of the city, and all of the cit-izens of the county, the opportunity to vote it upor down.

According to its caption, House Bill 1171 isan act ‘to provide for the restructuring of the gov-ernments of the City of Macon, the City ofPayne City, and Bibb County; to create andincorporate a new political body corporate underthe name Macon-Bibb County; to provide for thestatus, boundaries and powers of the restructuredgovernment; to provide for the form, administra-

tion, and affairsof the restruc-tured govern-ment; to pro-vide for officersand employ-

ees, elections, courts, authorities, taxation, andfinance; to provide for related matters; to providefor severability; to provide for a referendum; toprovide foreffective dates; to repeal conflicting laws, and forother purposes.’ (The complete text of the billand all of its details may be found online athttp://www.legis.ga.gov)

Each of us undoubtedly will find our ownpersonal likes and dislikes amongst the specificsproposed in this sweeping piece of legislation,

and we can surely expect the rhetoric both for andagainst this consolidation plan to intensify as theJuly vote on the referendum draws near.

In my view, this consolidation proposal, firstand foremost, gives us the opportunity to changethe way we currently govern ourselves. Accordingto the proposed legislation, our current two gov-erning bodies totaling twenty-two elected offi-cials would be transformed into one of only ten (aMayor and nine commissioners). That in and ofitself would be a landmark change in the way we,the people, are represented, and how the affairs ofthe whole are effectively addressed.

So while we all may find something of theDevil in the details, the overriding questionwith which each of us must grapple is whethergoing forward, consolidation will work towardthe overall benefit of our community andMiddle Georgia region.

EPILOGUEIt was President John F. Kennedy who stated,“Change is the law of life. And those who lookonly to the past or the present are certain to missthe future.” We here in Middle Georgia just can-not afford to miss the future anymore, for as ourcurrent President, Barak Obama, once stated,“Change will not come if we wait for some otherperson or some other time. We are the ones we'vebeen waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

So let’s now move forward!

Let’s Now Move Forward!

LARRY SCHLESINGERPresident Pro Tem -Macon City Council

The winds of change here in Macon and Bibb County are current-ly blowing rather wild and free. President Pro-Tem of Macon CityCouncil, Larry Schlesinger, talks Macon Miracle, Consolidationand moving Macon forward.

OP-ED THE CITY SCENE

Thank you for labeling me as such, all younapalm spreading Paul-ites who are theself-proclaimed "Defenders of the Faith",

"Proclaimers of the Truth" and "The FoundingFathers Favorites". Your name calling has finallyproduced something meaningful.

The American Heritage Dictionary's defini-tion of neoconservativism is "an intellectual andpolitical movement in favor of political, econom-ic, and social conservatism that arose in opposi-tion to the perceived liberalism of the 1960s" andWordnet 3.0 defines it as "an approach to politicsor theology that represents a return to a tradition-al point of view (in contrast to more liberal or rad-ical schools of thought of the 1960s)". Guilty onboth charges.

The early Neocons of the Sixties themselveswere a radical group indeed. According to JamesNuechterlein in an essay titled "The End ofNeoconservatism" written in 1996,

"Neoconservatives differed with traditionalconservatives on a number of issues, of which the

three most important, in my view, were the NewDeal, civil rights, and the nature of theCommunist threat. On the New Deal, neocon-servatives wanted not to dismantle thewelfare/regulatory state, as did most traditional-ists, but simply to prevent its infinite expansion,as in the programs of the Great Society. On civilrights, all neocons were enthusiastic supporters ofMartin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Actsof 1964 and 1965, while the National Review wassuspicious of King and opposed to federal legisla-tion forbidding racial discrimination. "

Well, I can certainly see how calling some-one a Neocon by a Paul supporter might be con-sidered a derogatory term in their thoughts. (Seethe famous newsletters.) As for the New Deal, there were aspects of it that were despiratelyneeded at the time, such as the creation of theFDIC and the Rural Electrification Association, but I do heartily agree that the Great Society ofLBJ was certainly a lot more detrimental to socie-ty than the beginning of the entitlements thatFDR brought us, which were held largely in checkby Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy.

In more recent history, Neocons are highlysupportive of Israel and opposed to the current

regimes in Iran and Syria, Hezzbollah and theMuslim Brotherhood. Again....Guilty as chargedand I amunashamed to sayso. Israel has beenone of the UnitedStates most loyalallies. Why shouldwe not show themthe same loyalty thatthey have shown us?Especially since theyare our last allies inthe Middle East.

Irving Kristol, who's been calledthe "Godfather ofNeocons" and thereal father of Bill Kristol who is pictured abovewith me, wrote in a 2003 article for The WeeklyStandard called "The NeoconservativePersuation" that Republicans cannot be "blind tothe fact that neoconservative policies, reachingout beyond the traditional political and financialbase, have helped make the very idea of politicalconservatism more acceptable to a majority ofAmerican voters. Nor has it passed official noticethat it is the neoconservative public policies, notthe traditional Republican ones, that result inpopular Republican presidencies."

The main policies Mr. Kristol wrote aboutare cutting taxes as well as foreign policy. ANeocon, according to Kristol, feels that the dividebetween the 'haves and the have nots' lessenswhen there is economic growth for all, even if thatmeans an increased federal deficit which is a nec-essary evil if it will help spur the desired econom-ic growth. Kristol continues, "It is a basic assump-

tion of neoconservatism that, as a consequence ofthe spread of affluence among all classes, a proper-

ty-owning andtax-paying pop-ulation will, intime, becomeless vulnerableto egalitarianillusions andd e m a g o g i cappeals andmore sensibleabout the fun-damentals ofeconomic reck-oning." In otherwords, sharingthe wealth

through growth and hard work also means sharingthe tax burden throughout society, as opposed toPresident Obama who just wants to give the"have-nots" what the "haves" have.

In foreign policy Kristol wrote that patriot-ism is "a natural and healthy sentiment andshould be encouraged by both private and publicinstitutions", that a world government is a badidea, that we should be able to tell our friendsfrom our enemies and that we should have mili-tary superiority. What novel ideas! Does thissound like the exact opposite of PresidentObama? It sure does to me.

I confess that I am a proud Neocon and Iwould like to thank all of the Ron Paul supporterswho have given me the label that I now complete-ly embrace, although I don't completely embraceeverything a traditional Neocon believes. Justdo me a favor in the future please? Capitalize theN in Neocon.

Confessions of a NeoconSEEING RED

The first time one of Ron Paul's supporters called me a Neocon I

was insulted and hacked off which was exactly the response the

name caller was looking for. However since then, the more times

I have been called that the more enamored to it I have become.

Yes....I admit it...I am a Neocon.

BY SEAN PRITCHARD

Earlier this week, I was treated to possibly the most unique experienceI have been a part of since I moved to Macon in 1998. Brad called meup as I was finishing work and said “Hey man, you need to come to

Adams Lounge with me today”. That was all. I vaguely remember reading anarticle about Adams in the paper years back but I had no idea what to expect. As we were riding out there, Brad kept telling me stories about the place andits history with this area. It turns out that we were going there to celebrate Mr.Charles Adams’ 92nd birthday with his family and friends. The loungeturned out to be way more than I expected. Opened in 1941, and owned bythe same family since, they’ve hosted everyone from Little Richard to OtisRedding to Chick Willis and could easily sit at the top of a list of historicAmerican music landmarks. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous getting into thewhole situation, but was treated to a warmer, more respectful reception thanany bar or nightclub I’ve visited in Macon. You could sit for days and listento stories about the musicians and showman that have graced the stage there. Not something you would expect from a tin-roofed, cinderblock building ona back road in Jones County. Thanks to Brad, Andrew, Mr. Lucado, and theentire Adams family for having me be a part of such a historical moment. Iam continually astounded by the history of our community.

For me personally, March might be the busiest month of the year with allthe Cherry Blossom Festival events. For those of you ready to “think pink”,you can update yourself with all the info you need atwww.cherryblossom.com. Word around the office is that we’ve event got abrand new iPhone application this year for you to download for free.

2012 marks the 30th year for the festival and what we all hope will beour most successful year yet, so make sure to look into everything that willbe going on. The festival runs from March 16th – March 25th. That’s all.

On Friday, there are three shows in Downtown that are going to forceyou to make some decisions. Dirty Guv’nahs and Reluctant Saints will begetting down at the Cox Capitol Theatre while right down the street Roastedis hosting Jon Lindsay, a musician from Charlotte, North Carolina whosesound might be described as “Brian Wilson meets a Moog”. Expect fun, poppy tunes to get you moving. WoolFolk and Lennox, both burgeoninglocal bands will be playing the show with Jon as well.

URBAN EXPLORER

Delve into Macon’s Nightlife

If you’re up for a bit of late nightaction, Death On Two Wheels will be atThe Hummingbird with Stonerider fromAtlanta. Watch your whiskey, as it willdisappear if you leave it around theseguys. Make sure to save a bit of moneythough, because Bragg Jam will behosting Little Tybee at TheHummingbird as part of their initial 2012lineup announcement. The Bragg Jamwebsite will be featuring a number ofartists for the upcoming concert crawlstarting that evening. Little Tybee wasrecently listed as “#1 Band in Atlanta toWatch” by Paste Magazine. They’ll bejoined by friends and tour mates RiverWhyless from Asheville and Macon’sown sunDollars opens up the show. Youshould do your best not to miss this one!

On Sunday (permitting that they dothis again), you should head over toRookery for their special brunch menu. Iwas sitting there last week with a groupof friends and suddenly a 7-piece NewOrleans-style jazz band walks in, sets upand plays throughout most of the after-noon. It, plus Roger’s bloody mary’s,made for one of the most enjoyable din-ing experiences I’ve had in Macon.Everyone from the church crowd to thewaiters was dancing about and it trans-formed the entire room. You may evenjust wind up staying the whole day andwatching March Madness.

Whoabro!, a band comprised of agroup of Mercer University students, will be setting up at the Hummingbirdthat night for a set of originals and cov-ers that range from Phish to My MorningJacket. I’ve heard a great deal about themsince their last show at Roasted so I’mgoing to check them out. If anything, I’mglad Mercer students are gettinginvolved with the Downtown crowd inthat manner.

Being cautious of the Ides of March, rest up and head down to Rookery onMarch 16th. Mag Tard will be takingover the place at 10:00 and playingthrough songs from their most recentrelease Did You Mean Mustard?(Google’s suggestion when you search“Mag Tard”). Not familiar with themyet? You can check out their brand newmusic video for their song “Stayed AtHome” on TheBlueIndian.com. AnthonyEnnis and James Legrand of CarbonFilms did a fine job of it.

Like I said, the Cherry BlossomFestival kicks off that night as well, butthere will be events going on all aroundMacon for St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th.If I can get away from work for a second,I’ll probably wind up at the MercerVillage party that College Hill is hostingthroughout the entire village. Plus therewill be green beer that night at The Birdand Drivin N Cryin will be there withBack City Woods. All in all, that makesfor a great weekend. I’ll see you aroundonce March is over and the pollen hassettled.

Bragg Jam will be hosting Little Tybee at The Hummingbird on Saturday,March 10 as part of their initial 2012 lineup announcement. Little Tybee wasrecently listed as “#1 Band in Atlanta to Watch” by Paste Magazine.

Their namecomes from a tiny island off the coast of theirnative Georgia, where legend has it, an undet-onated atomic bomb from the 1950s lies miss-ing. In the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Clevelandhad struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, JasonHoward. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who

had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrestfor robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabil-itated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, was-n't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, JasonHoward continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs,Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Clevelandwrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later con-firmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beatenfirst. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained:

Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I willnot only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered,so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame.

For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he con-structed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured onAmerica’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Policefound him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross countryrunner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is apage of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
