CROSSROADSWRITERSCONFERENCE

MACON’S BEST [email protected]

Crossroads grew out of a conversationbetween some friends who wanted to build onthe literary and creative legacy of Macon. Inthe fall of 2008, with the help of several volun-teers and great organizations, Chris Horne andDrs. Heather Braun, Kelly Whiddon andMonica Young-Zook launched the firstCrossroads Writers Conference in downtownMacon. In a stroke of luck, they’d invited nov-elist Ad Hudler, who really helped establish theconference its fun, loose, communal vibe.

Over the past four years, the conferencehas been proud to bring hundreds of writerstogether to learn from the likes of SteveAlmond, Rick Moody, Joshilyn Jackson, JayParini, Judith Ortiz-Cofer, Carlo Rotella, GailSimone, Idris Goodwin, Tina McElroy-Ansa,Adam Davies, Lauretta Hannon, and severalothers. Not to mention all the talented writersfrom the metro Macon area who’ve giventheir time to making this conference happen.

While the conference hosts regionalauthors, wonderful workshops and readings, the organizers are also very involved in ourcommunity. In 2011, Crossroads received aKnight Neighborhood Challenge grant toreplace broken sidewalks in the College Hillarea with new sidewalks adorned with poetry, lyrics, history, quotes and other literature relat-ed to Macon. It’s called Sidewalk Stories andthey’re still taking nominations for the side-

walks to replace and the stories with which toreplace them.

This spring, Crossroads donated 100copies of “Project Dreams,” a children’s bookby local author Rhonda Singletary, to a litera-cy event held by Mercer University.

This year, the Conference starts onFriday, October 5th, with open registration forevents from noon - 3pm for their FreelancersSummit, featuring topics on MagazineWriting, Writing for the Web and Turningyour Stories into Books. On Saturday, registra-tion is from 7:30am to noon. At noon lunchand learn with Keynote speaker Chris Baty, founder of NaNoWriMo, author of “No Plot?No Problem!” Other notable authors includeAdam Mansbach, author of “Go the F*** toSleep,” and “Angry Black White Boy,”Delilah Dawson, author of “Wicked as TheyCome,” Bernice McFadden, author of“Gathering the Waters,” and Robert Venditti, creator of “Surrogates.”

On Sunday, enjoy a WordsmithBrunchfest from 10:30 to noon, and Book Fairand book signings from many of the weekendsauthors from noon - 4pm. To register for indi-vidual sessions, or weekend packages, visitCrossroadswriters.org. Individial sessions $20each, Talk blocks start at $45 and weekendpackages start at $135. All events at theMacon Centreplex and Macon Marriott Hotel.

It’s time for residents and visitors alike to welcome fall on shady Riverdale Drive inMacon, as the Jazz Association of Macon presents its ninth annual Jazz & Arts onRiverdale event Sat., Oct. 20, from Noon to 6pm.

An afternoon of free live Jazz will feature the classic sounds of many of the area’sfinest musicians including: the Adam Hendley Tritet, World Famous Walnut StreetDixie, Racing and Marching Society Jazz Band, and EKC Quintet and Sam SkeltonQuartet.

An art market, featuring local and regional fine artists, will offer works to ooh andaah over before selecting just the right pieces to take home. A kids’ corner with inflat-ables and an art area will entertain the little ones, and food and beverage vendors willbe on site, adding to the park like atmosphere.

Lawn chairs are encouraged, and the neighbors of Riverdale Drive welcome theopportunity to share their shade with visitors to the event, which they present in part-nership with the Jazz Association.

The Jazz Association of Macon is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Proceedsfrom the day support the organization’s annual “JAM Goes Back to School” project, which sends professional musicians into Middle Georgia schools to perform and edu-cate, as well as the Jazz Association of Macon Young Jazz Musician scholarship, which is awarded at this event.

Buried Hatchet Production CompanyOwners: Brandy and Geoff Flynn ofElko, Georgia.

Buried Hatchet Production Company is defi-nitely a new business to keep an eye on.They have partnered with The New PerryHotel, to bring the community live and inter-active entertainment.

What is Buried Hatchet? This companyis a little thought that has been made intoreality. They will be bringing Houston Countyits very own Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. Many of you will be asking; “What exactly isa murder mystery dinner theater?” well to putit in the words of Mrs. Brandy Flynn

“It is a classic way to bring mystery, excitement, improv, and a written play toHouston County. It will be interactive, meaning the audience will have a chance tofind clues, talk to the players of the compa-ny, and help with the story as it unfoldsbefore their very eyes.

Guests are provided with dinner and thechance to participate in a classic ‘Who DoneIt?’” Mrs. Flynn was very excited to have thechance to talk about her up and coming pro-duction that will open to the public onOctober 26, 2012.

Mrs. Flynn says. “I have always wantedto go to one but there isn’t anything aroundour area that has something like this. So afterabout a week of the idea floating around inmy head I decided to talk to the owner of theNew Perry Hotel about it. She was as thrilledwith the idea as I was. I talked it over somemore with the owner and my husband. “

I asked Mrs. Flynn about the name ofher company, she laughed and said. “Well it’sa long story but I will try to sum it up as bestas I can. It’s very similar to the phrase bury-ing the hatchet; it’s about putting the pastbehind you and moving forward. Not only

moving forwardin business, butlife and love aswell.” The firstproduction the

company will host is titled ‘Something old, something new, someone slaughtered...where were you?’ a collaboration written byMrs. Flynn and her dear friend Christina.

Mrs. Flynn says “One thing the audi-ence can look for are clues throughout thedinner. The person to put all the clues at theend of the evening will win some prizes.”

Prizes will include the Golden HatchetAward for best sleuth of the evening and adinner for two at the New Perry Hotel.Guests who arrive for the first production oftheir first performance will be let in on a fewmore secretes than others. “The night shouldbe full of surprises.” says Mrs. Flynn.

When asked if we could have a teaserinto other story lines that this company willbe offering the community Mrs. Flynnsmiled. “I do not want to give away toomuch about the other shows but I will let youin on one other show we are going to havelater on in the coming months. It’s a classreunion, full of lies and deception and possi-bly murder.”

With all the teasers and mystery thiscompany has to offer, it is definitely one tokeep an eye on in the future.

10 OCTOBER 2012

“The price of victory is high but so are the rewards. Ifyou believe in yourself and never quit you will be a win-ner”. This quote by Paul Bear Bryant, who led theAlabama football team to win six national champi-onships and thirteen conference championships, stretch-es across the wall of Bama Girlz Cafe as the missionstatement of this quaint little cafe in a corner betweenthe Houston County Medical Center and the CVS onWatson Boulevard. The brick facade and low roof isadorned with Bama accents and the interior has beenentirely reborn as a comfortable diner/cafe completewith two big screen televisions and sports memorabilia, all inspired by the Tide. It avoids the pitfalls of asmokey sports bar and is a welcoming and wholesomealternative to other establishments of the chain variety. This is a great place to take the family to watch a game.Especially if you love Alabama football.

Though at least one of the televisions is dedicatedto the Bama game on Saturdays, you can catch updateson other teams as you sample the menu, decked out withamped up classics. All beef Nathan’s hot dogs of the mostgenerous portions are stretched out in poppy seed bunsand topped with homemade chili or slaw upon request, and the cook, being a Chicago native, knows his wayaround a vat of clam chowder, as only a Yankee mandoes. The menu standards include a “build your own”pizza with a variety of fresh toppings and healthy sand-wich options on a choice of white or honey wheat bread.

The sandwiches are a popular favorite and areserved as footlongs or six inch subs. The prices are com-petitive to any of the average sandwich deals out thereand so much better than the run of the mill, mass mar-keted varieties. Chunky chicken salad with a slightcrunch of celery and something special you can’t quiteput your finger makes for one of their most popularsandwiches. The lean meat sub is a Black Angus RoastBeef, Black Forest Ham, and Honey Roasted Turkeywhen paired with a bag of chips and a sweet tea, hits thelunch spot just right.

Melissa Powers, co-owner of Bama Girlz Cafe, is alifelong Bama fan, born and bred in Tuscaloosa,

Alabama. She visited her best friend who was stationed atthe base and she liked it so much she never left. She hasraised her two children in Warner Robins, had both of herchildren a stone’s throw from the cafe at Houston MedicalCenter, and claims her new home through and through, though her loyalty to her team will never waver.

“I looked at this spot for a year after Prinnie Mackclosed their doors and waited for the right moment. I’mreally happy with the way things have been going! We’ve been written up in The Telegraph’s Deal Saver,Deal Chicken has run some specials through us, and lastweek we were talked about on 13WMAZ! The commu-nity has shown us a lot of love already in the short timewe’ve been open.”

The crowds on Saturday are the largest, catering tothe enormous population of football fans living in theHouston County area. Who can blame them? With a

couple of the best highschool football teams inthe country right in ourown backyards, andWorld Little Leaguechampions popping uplike weeds on our ownsoil, sport is king inHoCo. The Bama Girlzwant to give back totheir community as well, hoping to encouragepatronage by sponsoringa high school nightsometime in the future.Melissa hopes to giveback 10-15% of sales tothe teams that live andwork right here in town.

“My business isabout our love of thegame and any way I canencourage, support, andfeed the community...

well, I’m more than happy to be a part of it! I may be aBama girl, but I love the game!”

The proof is in the pudding, so to speak, as BamaGirlz doesn’t just “Roll Tide”; they sell the much covet-ed Georgia Bulldogs gear on site along with a couple ofGeorgia Tech Yellow jackets items for us die-hards whonever learn (Tech is a great school and I’m not giving upon them without a fight!).

Bama Girlz Cafe is open Monday, Tuesday andWednesday from 7-7, and Thursday, Friday and Saturdayfrom 7-10 pm serving breakfast to die for (I haven’t heardof another place who does a build your own omelet aroundhere) with fresh donuts delivered from the good folks atDaylight Donuts on Russell Parkway and features dailylunch specials. For more information or to place an orderfor delivery call (478)302-6516 or visit them onFacebook at Bama Girlz Cafe. RACHEL HELIE

It’s election time again and one thing thateveryone is talking about is “the ECON-OMY”. As if we needed reminding, thecandidates find a way to tell us all thatour lives are or will be an oppressive no-dance-land that time forgot if we don’tvote for their interests. Well, boo on that! The 11th Hour is taking the drudges bythe hand and showing them “the one trueway” to the light fantastic!

So we need a party. It’s harvest sea-son, election season, football is on fulltilt, and Halloween is right around thecorner. Budgets are tight but there is noneed to take fright and hide from ourfriends until it all blows over. Here is apoint by point guide to decor, drinks, anddelight on the uber-cheap!

DecorYou can literally find decorations justlying around during autumn. It’s Octoberand the Southern trees drop their frocksresplendent upon the ground. Take a walkand you can find sweetgum and poplarleaves, maple and oak. A bunch ofbranches in a cylinder vase picked upfrom a thrift or dollar store serves as anall purpose autumn centerpiece and theylast for a week or more. Have hydrangeasthat are looking a little dreary and brown?Take the dried dust-colored bundles andmix them into a bouquet of autumnfoliage for interest or alone for a creepy“dead thing” Halloween accent.

If you are looking for a strictlyHalloween theme, go with bare branchesof any length and superglue candy corn tothose bad boys. Arrange in a vase andempty the remaining candy into the bot-tom for an anchor to the whole bundle.Voila! Interesting themed swags can bearranged for practically any occasionusing plastic tablecloths purchased fromDollar Tree stores. Election themed redand blue draped from the four corners inalternating color or black and orangeHalloween; team colors can easily be hadand; for that matter; all of you Georgiafans can just save the black fromHalloween and the red from election par-ties and repurpose every time you have afootball cookout during the season. Fourdollars well spent! A bundle of like-col-

ored balloons gathered together in abunch make a funky chandelier for thecenter and a bag of those will run you $1per color (or get a mixed bag!) Blackconstruction paper can be used to silhou-ette anything from arachnids to zom-bies...you got A-Z right there! Put them atbaseboards on walls or in windows. Doneright, they are elegantly creepy.

Eats & DrinksClean autumn leaves can be scatteredamongst dishes of harvest goodness andwhat would a party be without the good-ness? Autumn flavors are heavy on thesavory. Mulled wine is a popularfavorite...at least it is at my house. Aninexpensive bottle of Cabernet mixedwith a light dose of water, sugar, and acinnamon stick, dried orange, and clovebundle warmed (not boiled!) on the stove-top is a heady brew in a lush red that, when served in funky stemware, can beHalloween friendly or deliciously cozy. A nice beer that won’t break your bankand sticks to an autumn theme is theShocktop Pumpkin Wheat. Take myadvice. Go easy on the decor expensesand amp up the beverages and the food.Your guests will thank you for it. If youwant a good selection of beer at a pricethat doesn’t give you hives (though thatwould save you money on that costumeexpense...something to think about) go forthe Sweetwater. It’s a Georgia companythat you can feel good about purchasingfrom and feel even better about drinking.I like the Exodus Porter, a quaffy drinkwith the right dose of chocolate. I neverargue with chocolate. Sweetwater 420 issold at the fair price of around $13 atwelve pack of twelve ounce bottles atany Kroger grocery store. Easy-peasy anddelicious plus it takes the edge off of anydisappointment at game time or electiontime, whichever the case may be...and ifthere is no disappointment, “Cheers!”

As for food. I want to let you in a lit-tle secret. Bread goes a really long way.Apple pan charlotte, cornbread dressing, bread puddings...all of these tasties can bemade on a tight budget and still be damnclose to gourmand with decadence in theright places. A shot of good bourbon and

fine vanilla you may have hiding in thecupboard adds a noticeable kick. I wouldput the whipping cream to double dutyand make a nice spinach artichoke dip onthe same day you make the bread pud-ding. I know after I open a carton ofwhipping cream, it just hangs out in myfridge until it goes bad most times. Alemon thyme roasted chicken will feedabout 4-6 people and costs about $4-6.Drizzle the chicken with oil and lemonjuice, sprinkle thyme and coarse sea saltand toss in the oven at 425 degrees for anhour and a half. Savory chicken and acornbread dressing paired with autumn

roasted veggies like sweet potatoes andcarrots tossed in olive oil and rosemarywith a coarse sea salt is a pleasing, easy, and affordable.

For the Halloween specific, hop ontowebsites like Pinterest and click on theHoliday link. The lists for affordableHalloween themed recipes are endless. The mummy pigs in the blanket are stan-dard but I like the rice krispyFrankenstein’s monster on a stick...main-ly because, you know, it’s on a stick. Whatever your budget, there is alwaystime for pleasure. Have a safe and happyharvest, middle Georgia!

First of all, explain your genre of music, Ehop?E-hop is something me and my former group, 3 Bad Brothaz, came up with back in 2005. It isa sound called "Electronic Hip-Hop". We came up with this sound because clubs always want-ed us to play Hip-Hop and we always wanted to play Electronic music (I know tables haveturned today). We came up with the idea of using Electronic beats with Hip-Hop vocals so wecould play both and make everyone happy. The people loved it. They liked it so much wecame out with a Mixtape series (9 volumes) titled E-hop and sold thousands of those CDs and itlead to a new fad where you had artists rappin' over Electronic beats. I'm not gonna take cred-it, cough, cough, but you can listen to David Guetta, Flo Rida, Pitbull, Usher, Ne-Yo, all the bigbillboard artists today and that's what there rapping/singing over, electronic beats. I truly dobelieve my group, 3 Bad Brothaz played a part in paving the way and showing thoseartists/record labels a different lane to play in. If you listen to my latest album, Kidd Star & TheE-hop Brigade you can hear E-hop in it's true sense. E-hop in it's truest sense uses breakbeats, that's what we used when we started E-hop. Being in the South you know we love our bootymusic, so if you're not using a breakbeat it's just not the same. Currently I've been workingwith grammy nominated musicians, "Buzz" Amato & "Slipp" Hinkle to try and develop E-hopeven further and push the envelope musically. We've got some great music about to bereleased and I'm really excited for the next wave of E-hop!

You’re an artist and producer, and you have several very well produced videoson Youtube featuring your tracks off your newest album, explain that wholeprocess for our readers. I do wear many hats and that task is very difficult in itself. Everyphase is different and requires a different mentality. The first step in making a song, is the cre-ative aspect. You gotta be able to assemble a song. My creativity stems from a lot of placesbut honestly, it just hits me. Like an alarm goes off in my head and says, "Time to make a songKidd", sometimes that alarm goes off 3 times a month, sometimes 1 every 6 months. It couldstart with a cool riff I hear in my head or some lyrics I just start sayin, regardless of how it starts

Aaron "Kidd Star" PayesAs an artist and producer, Kidd Star released his first solo album last year and was signed to IshiRecords, with a single hitting #4 on Billboard’s Hot Hip-Hop CD Single Charts. Since then, he’s remixedfor European Billboard artists, Milk Inc., DJ Dean and Pulsedriver. Kidd Star currently resides inAtlanta and plays in Macon every Friday night. He says, “I love playing in Macon, it has such a greathistory in music. I always try to give Macon a sneak peak of what Atlanta is playing whenever I amin town.” Just this month, the promising DJ is releasing two new singles, “Big Ol Trick” with a musicvideo and “Do My Thang.” Listen up below on the art of E-hop, and the business of remixing.

I have to be inspired somehow, I can't force a song. That's the trick. However, while I'm writing the song usually the visual comes to mind. It goes hand andhand, especially when you're writing the song, producing the song & mixing thesong, to help you through all those hours you start putting a mini-movie in yourhead of what you want people to think of when they hear this song. The major-ity of my songs are fun, so I always try to make my videos fun, never get toodeep with anything, I leave that to the true poets. When it's time to shoot a

video choosing the right director & editor is the key. I have had great ones & Ihave had bad ones. The great ones you wanna kiss, the bad ones you wannaslap. I actually just shot my latest video myself, that was a learning experience. It was a tribute song to James Brown called "Do My Thang" which will bereleased this Fall. I incorporated video mapping which is a fairly new technolo-gy & I shot half of it in Augusta where James Brown & my B'boys I take on tourwith me are from. I'm anxious to get it out there & see how people react to it.

You had a single go to #4 on Billboards Hot Hip-Hop CD SingleCharts, how does that affect your career? The song, "Rah! (It'sGametime)" going #4 on the Billboard CD Singles Charts was definitely a highpoint in my career and helped open a lot of doors. Funny thing is, I made thatsong for me actually, not intentionally trying to make it to Billboard. I used toplay college football and always wanted to make a sports song, so that was"Rah!". I just thought it would be cool to get it on Madden or something to thatextent. But it's always the songs you just think are for fun that do the best.Ended up several professional sports teams picked it up as their fight song andit was also picked up by ESPN and the movie 'Coming & Going'. I'm still wait-ing on Madden to pick it up and get my free 2013 xbox game, but in themeantime it's my theme song. Every hero needs a theme song.

What inspires you to create music? My inspiration comes from many things, but the foundation would have to bepeople. I pretty much live out of a suitcase and have been living on the "road"for almost 7 years now. I have been to some great places and met some fasci-nating people. But those experiences didn't come from staying in a hotel anddining out at 5 star restaruants while DJing, those experiences came from stay-ing at friends/fellow DJs place and just watching how people live, listening totheir problems and feelings and realizing how blessed I am to continue this life.Everyone has got a story to tell.

Why do you think there’s been such an explosion for DJing? Whoare some of your favorites out there right now?DJs are def the new rockstars. In my opinion, the explosion of DJing is due tothe explosion of technology. It takes hours to buy a laptop & software, but ittakes years to learn music/djing. So you have today a lot of beginner DJs. Andwhat we have today aren't DJs, we have 80% itunes playlist players, 10% pro-ducers who spin their own tracks & 10% DJs. A DJ, or at least when I wasgrowing up what a DJ was, was someone who cut up each track in a uniqueway, seemlesly going through genre's without missing a beat, showcasing histrickier while entertaining the audience with his mic skills. Nowadays you don'treally get that too much. People say I'm just hating, but it ain't hating if you'rebad. Ha, Ha, am I old & cynical or what??? As far as who I like today, well, there are some true cats left, DJ Scene, DJ Vice, DJ Chuckie, DJ Jelly, DJ Hersheyto name a few...and one of my idols, the late Roc Raida (RIP), he was amazing.Everyone who wants to be a DJ should be required to watch this guy, he wasentertainment behind the turntables. And as far as locally, I got to give my manDJ Drive props, his scratching is bananna's and I continually get on his case toenter a DMC battle, he's that good and he's the reason I got my shot here inMiddle GA, the only thing he's needs work on is his Madden game.

“DJs are def the new rockstars...”

A DJ, or at least when I was growing upwhat a DJ was, was someone who cutup each track in a unique way, seemleslygoing through genre's without missing abeat, showcasing his trickier whileentertaining the audience with his micskills. Nowadays you don't really getthat too much.

What are the logistics or “rules” involved whenremixing someone elses music? Business wise, the#1 rule to remixing someone else's music, get their per-mission. However, not many people do & I am guilty ofit to at times. The thinking is an unknown producer willremix some Billboard artists track in hopes to use theirname to jump start their career, which in some instancesworks, but don't think you're gonna get any money fromthem. I learned my lesson with that in '05 when my for-mer group remixed the European artist Milk Inc.'s track"Walk on Water". There version didn't do anything, ourversion went #1 on Q100 in Atlanta, GA and severalother major markets. When they booked Milk Inc to per-form in the US, the crowds/promoters were upsetbecause they weren't playing our version. Milk Inc., was-n't aware of our version & when they found out they sentthe lawyers on us. That was rough spanking at 25 yrsold, learned a lot from that. But in regards to the musicalapproach of remixing, I feel you have to put your twist onthe song, if the remix version sounds just like the song, you didn't remix it, you edited it. Give the song a differ-ent angle or vibe, change up the beat, the chords, themelody, make the producer say, "wow, I didn't think Icould go there with that song". My group I remix with,The Rat Bastardz ("Buzz" Amato, "Slipp" Hinkle), weapproach every remix as a new song. We did a remix toAdele's track "Rolling in the Deep" and if you listen to it,

it's nothing like the original and honestly, I feel it's betterthan the original. You can listen to it and our other remixesoff my soundcloud page, Soundcloud.com/kiddstar, under

sets, rat bastardz. Another perfect example of what I'mtalking about is a remix that was done to my song "Rah!(It's Gametime) by Macon's own DJ Structure. He took thatsong and put his twist on it and it sounds nothing like theoriginal and I was so impressed. You can hear his remixon my soundcloud page or website. He did a stellar job.Keep your eye on that cat, he's going places. And oneother footnote, you can take mash-up "remixes" crumblethem up, put 'em in the garbage and throw em out the win-dow, those aren't remixes.

Tell us about this new project with DallasAustin? I'm pretty excited about the Rowdy DJs opportu-nity. Dallas Austin will be launching his new group of DJsthis year that he will be heading and I was asked to be apart of it, there is 5 of us including Dallas. It was anhonor to be asked by Dallas and his staff because that issomeone whom I've followed over the years and if I hadto model my production career after someone it would beDallas Austin. Good things are on the horizon, I'm justcontinuing to work, practice, practice, practice and stayfocused on my ultimate goal which is running a successfulindependent label. All these experiences will help me tobecome a better business man and I'm enjoying each turnalong this road called life. One thing I can say is when Idie, I'll never have to say 'I wish I...'.

People who are afraid ofclowns — and there aremany who share the pho-

bia — might want to avoid theOct. 4 performance of theDisgruntled Clown at Kipper’sSports Bar. He’s anything butyour average Bozo.

With costume and makeupdone entirely in shades of blackand white, he’s loud, abrasive, alittle scary, and, well, disgrun-tled. “Just think about all thestupid stuff you see every day,”he said. “You know how whenyou order fast food, and theyask you what you want to drink, then hand you a cup to go get ityourself?” asked Clown, whorefuses to divulge his real name.“I get them when they do that tome. I say, ‘Just give me the damned cup.’”

What started out as a dare in 1994 turned into a career andthe Disgruntled Clown was born into the comedy world.Dressed in an elegant black and white silk costume, and fullmake-up, the 6-foot-5, 300 pound “Clown,” as he is called byhis friends, takes the stage with an attitude as big as his heart. He was destined to be the Disgruntled Clown. His mom

always said he was a clown, which was confirmed uponbeing voted class clown inhigh school.

The Disgruntled Clown isone of the hottest comics onthe road, the only Comedianclown touring clubs,SmallTowns, colleges, and theatersfrom coast to coast. TheDisgruntled Clown is a one-man-show, complete withsound, lights, and specialeffects for an unforgettablecomedy experience. Buckleup, this ain’t no kiddie show.

Some people have a fear ofclowns called coulrophobia.According to the Clown, “thequickest way to get over yourfear is to get under them.”

The Clown hopes to turn everyone into coulrophilias, which isa fetish for clowns.

The Clown has worked with some of the biggest names inthe business, including Carrot Top, Ron White, the WhiteHouse Marine Corp Band, and many more. Show will start at8pm. Advance tickets can be purchased at Kippers for $8, oradmission will be $12 at the door.

A few years back, I wasworking with my oldestbrother at his contractingcompany. I was tired of theother jobs I had held, Iwanted to do somethingwith my hands, and I fig-ured this was as close toworking in the "family busi-ness" as I was going to get.We spent a lot of time driv-ing between jobs in histruck and because of that,we were listening to 99.1 atleast a few hours every day.I quickly developed mysomewhat ironic love affairwith country music and

now my radio doesn't leave WDEN when I'm in my car (I have anolder car, no CD player). I'm a fan of all kinds of country, from theclassics of Williams Sr. and Waylon Jennings, to that awkwardly awe-

some period in the 80's and 90's, to even the full blown auto-tuned,how-can-you-call-this-country country. I love a good pop song andthat's just about all country music is these days.

That's why I was thrilled when I was asked to cover the upcom-ing Luke Bryan Farm Tour 2012 concert that's taking place on themid-way in Central City Park on October 13th. Last year, the eventsold-out at Luther Williams Stadium and it's set to be bigger and betterthis time around. The idea for the “Farm Tour” concerts came fromBryan as a way to give back to local farming communities by celebrat-ing and lifting up the American Farmer and offering a fun escape withthe outdoor shows. Proceeds from the concerts will go to a scholarshipfor a student from a farming family attending a local college. Bryan isactually one of only three country musicians to have three consecutive,Platinum-selling tracks on an album, joined only by Taylor Swift andJason Aldean. I'll be there bright and early, tail-gating and practicingmy country slang and I hope you'll stop by. Tickets available onlinewww.lukebryan.com, $30 general admission. Chairs and blanketsallowed. No backpacks or coolers. Tailgating starts at 2pm, gatesopens at 5pm and show will start at 7pm. Macon is the last stop on theTour, and this show is sure to sell out! -SEAN PRITCHARD

In the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and JewelCleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grownson, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a dis-

turbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophre-nia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thoughtthat Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, rel-atives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killingand burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family'svacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police foundthe bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in abarn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shotin the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a

November 1994 note, Howard explained:“Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I

will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cor-nered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.”

For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructedout of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s MostWanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found himbreaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page ofone of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
