April 16th we celebrated National Volunteer Week!
We want our volunteers to know that we celebrate them everyday.
We are so grateful each day for their service.
There is a topic that we come across quite often here at the Thayne Senior Center. It is one that sometimes is difficult to discuss, but needs all of our attention and will ultimately affect all of us. This is the subject of Elder Abuse and is made more difficult since any intervention is really intrusion into other’s lives and their homes.
It is not often that we confront the problem of physical abuse (although we do see some of that). More often we come into contact with what we have come to call “Abuse by Neglect” or mental abuse. Both of these are difficult to diagnose, because we are looking through such a small window into some-one else’s life.
The Thayne Senior Center is obligated, by law, to report any reasonable suspicion of abuse. We work closely with DFS (Department of Family Services) and APS (Adult Protective Services) to make certain that we are aware of existing protocols for dealing with abuse.
Bottom line? Every one of us should be cognizant that such a nefarious beast lives among us and that we have an obligation (both legal and moral) to help the victims of abuse. It is extremely sensitive to become involved, but it essential that appropriate authorities know of potential problems.

No matter your age, everyone needs calcium. Calcium plays an important role in build-ing strong teeth and bones,
lowering blood pressure, and maintaining heart beat. Dairy foods such as milk and cheese, and yogurt are great sources of calcium. More than 70
percent of the calcium in the US food supply comes from
dairy foods. Other foods such as spinach and broccoli con-tain some calcium, but it is
not always absorbed as well as the calcium from dairy foods. Dairy foods are also fortified with vitamin D. Vitamin D, potassium, and magnesium bolster bone by improving
calcium absporption.
Milk also contains protein, phosphorus, vitamin B12, ribo-flavin and niacin. Phosphorus
helps strengthen bones and generates energy in the body’s
cells. B12 is important for building red blood cells that
carry oxygen from the lungs to working muscles. Riboflavin
helps convert food into energy and niacin helps normal
function of many enzymes in the body.

It’s not too early to begin taking precautions against West Nile virus, a potentially fatal viral infec-tion that tends to hit seniors particularly hard. West Nile is spread by mosquitoes and can cause a potentially serious illness in humans. Mosqui-toes spread the virus after they feed on infected birds and then bite people, other birds and animals. Last year (2007) there were 185 cases of West Niles virus reported in Wyoming with two deaths. There were 65 human cases with two deaths in 2006: 12 human cases with two deaths in 2005: 10 human cases and no deaths in 2004: and 393 human cases with 9 deaths in 2003. Fremont County accounted for more than half the human cases with 118 of 185 cases and one of the two deaths. First, we can reduce our risk from mosquitoes by reducing the wet areas where they breed, whether it’s standing puddles in our yards, stagnant drainage ditches or barrels or receptacles that collect water. Any standing water is a potential mosquito breed-ing ground, including ornamental fountains, wading pools, roof gutters and even old tires. Then we can protect ourselves against mosquito bites.
The Wyoming Department of Health recom-mends we remember the “five D’s” for reducing our risk for contracting West Nile virus. 1) DAWN and 2) DUSK- Most mosquito species prefer to feed at dawn or dusk, so avoid spending time outside during those times. 3) DRESS- Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when spending time outdoors or when mosquitoes are most active. Clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials to keep mosquitoes away from skin. 4) DRAIN- Mos-quitoes breed in shallow, stagnant water. Reduce the amount of standing water in or near your property by draining and/or removing it. 5) DEET- Use an insect repellent containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-tolumide). Products containing DEET should be used properly. When using DEET, be sure to read and follow the instructions on the product’s label. Other insect repel-lents such as Picaridin (KBR 3023) or oil of lemon eucalyptus are also highly effective. While most human West Nile infections in Wyoming occur in late summer or early fall, they can also happen earlier in the season. Wyoming has seen human cases of West Nile as early as May and as late as October. More information about West Nile virus can be found on the Wyoming Department of Health’s “Bad Skeeter” web site: www.badskeeter.org.
