On the cover: Patient and Doctor, Tim Newman.
3 thrive Fall 2010
When physician Tim Newman needed hernia surgery, he
chose the surgical team at Summa Barberton Hospital.
“The staff is excellent,” he said. “I preferred the option of
laparoscopic surgery* and knew a surgeon there who was
seasoned in those procedures. I knew the hospital and the
administrator. He’s always run a good quality program there
and he picks good people. I trusted my surgeon’s judgment
and his care. I never considered going anywhere else. It was
everything you want…efficient and caring.”
Newman was equally pleased with the speed of his
recovery. “I was in and out of the hospital on Friday and was
fine by that afternoon. On Monday, I returned to my normal
activities and my profession and that was invaluable to me.”
“Minimally invasive surgical procedures such as laparoscopy
offer other benefits, too,” said Robert G. Scarcella, M.D.,
FACS, a general surgeon on Summa Barberton Hospital’s
staff. “These include less pain, smaller incisions, less risk of
infection and less formation of adhesions.”
Minimally invasive surgery is available for many types of
procedures. Like Dr. Newman, most patients benefit from
shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries — and really,
that’s the goal — getting you back to your life and loved
ones as soon as possible.
For a referral to a Summa Health System

for minimally invasive surgery, call

From physician house calls to research to nationally renowned
senior care, Summa is redefining healthcare with solutions
that are smarter than ever. We’re sharing that message with
a new marketing campaign; “That’s more than healthcare.
That’s smartcare.”
The multi-media campaign kicked off in June using the
following media:
• newspaper ads
• billboards
• TV commercials
• radio spots
Summa’s community hospitals are running the campaign, too,
with local ads for minimally invasive surgery and cardiac care
using Summa’s familiar patient testimonials.
Watch for new examples of Summa “smartcare” in the months ahead!
John was back on his bike two months after surgery.
That’s more than healthcare. That’s smartcare.
When John Seaburn noticed a spot on his tongue, he didn’t realize it was cancer. “I saw a surgeon at Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, and that’s why I’m sitting here today. I was diagnosed in December, had two surgeries, and I was back to work in February. I can’t say enough about my care. My surgeon was just great.” Today, John’s in remission and riding his bike every chance he gets.

She heard Summa Wadsworth-Rittman
had new digital mammography equipment
so she spoke with her doctor and made
an appointment at this hospital. The new
equipment made a difference and she
received comforting news – everything
was fine.
When you choose Summa Wadsworth-
Rittman Hospital, you choose an area
leader in diagnostic imaging technologies.
You and your doctor have access
to the latest in tests and procedures. You
will appreciate our convenient location,
personalized care and outstanding
customer service.
Common types of diagnostic imaging:
DEXA (or DXA) – this test measures
bone density.
CT (or CAT) – combines X-ray and
computer technology to produce images
of the inside of the body.
Mammograms are a special type of
imaging that uses a low-dose X-ray to
examine breasts. Digital mammography
makes digital images, which provide
sharper images than film.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses
a powerful magnetic field and radio
frequency pulses to produce detailed
images. No radiation is used. It is helpful
to diagnose and monitor treatment of
organs in the chest, abdomen and pelvis,
blood vessels and breasts.
Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of
radioactive material testing and therapies.
Some machines are called SPECT/CT
or PET. These show the structure and
function of an organ, tissue, bone or
system of the body.
Ultrasound or sonography uses high-
frequency sound waves to produce images.
Images are 3-D or 4-D (moving.) Doppler
ultrasound may be included to measure
blood velocity. No radiation is used.
The diagnostic team at Summa
Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital looks
forward to answering your questions.
Our free kit, “Key Guide to Diagnostics”
provides information on tests and
how they are preformed. For your free
kit which includes a valet key ring,
visit www.wrhhs.org/diagnostics or call
(800) 237-8662 ext. XR3. n
Making choices for diagnostic imaging
Elaine Ridgley made a wise choice. Her annual mammogram showed a potential problem and the follow-up mammogram and ultrasound were inconclusive. Her provider told her to return for another screening in six months, but Ridgley wanted a better answer.

When John Seaburn received a diagnosis
of squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin
cancer) he was referred to a surgeon, Mark
Brigham, D.O., a specialist at Summa
Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. While John
had a very good first impression, he
chose to get a second opinion elsewhere
before committing to surgery at Summa
Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital.
After doing so, he made the decision to
have the surgery close to home with a
doctor he knew and trusted.
“It’s important for patients to feel at ease
with their doctor and have confidence
in the doctor’s expertise. The doctor-
patient relationship can
be critical to a quality
outcome. I want my patients to have the
best experience they can,” says Brigham.
You can choose where to have your
surgery. Your doctor may make a
suggestion but you owe it to yourself to
get the facts.
Ask your physician or surgeon where he/
she has surgical privileges. Most surgeons
are on staff at more than one hospital.
Ask about the hospital’s accreditation. Look for those who are accredited by
Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations.
Call your health insurance carrier. If
cost is a concern, ask about your out-
of-pocket expenses (deductibles,
copays, coinsurance) at the facilities you
are considering. Also ask if you need
prior authorization or other approvals. If
so, notify your physician and surgeon’s
offices and determine who will obtain
those approvals.
At Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital,
you will receive high-quality, compassionate
care — before, during and after your
surgery. We continually work to improve
our quality and safety performance and
patient satisfaction.
Our free “Before Your Surgery” kit includes
helpful information, such as What to Ask
before Your Surgery, and a list of Summa
Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital staff surgeons.
Order yours by visiting wrhhs.org/surgery or
call (800) 237-8662, ext. OR 93. n

PATIENT PROGRESS MONITOR
Your friends and family can follow the progress of your surgical
procedure from the moment you enter the surgical suite
to post anesthesia care unit and recovery by
watching the wall monitor in the surgical waiting
area. Your privacy is protected by the use of a
patient number which is displayed on the screen
instead of your name. Your surgeon will still meet with
your loved ones and provide a personal update on the
procedure and your recovery progress.
Our free kit, “Before Your Surgery” includes helpful
information, such as our General Surgery Services brochure,
a list of Summa Barberton Hospital staff surgeons, and
more. For your free kit, which includes a bandage travel
pack, visit summahealth.org/barbertonsurgery or call
(800) 237-8662, ext. OR 3.
News fromSumma Barberton Hospital
BLOODLESS SURGERY
Bloodless surgery, or blood conservation surgical strategies, uses
special techniques and technology that minimizes the use of outside
blood products or blood transfusions. By using these methods, the
risk of infections is reduced and blood donor availability is less of
a concern.
If you have any apprehensions about blood exposure, based on your
religious beliefs or as a matter of healthy living, our surgical team will
work with you to address your healthcare concerns. n
TOP QUALITY SCORES
As a patient or family member of a loved one, it
may comfort you to know Summa Barberton
Hospital is rated highly and consistently receives
high quality scores for preventing and/or reducing
the occurrences of surgical infections and
postoperative complications.
Summa Barberton Hospital and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital are recipients of numerous awards and recognized for significant medical achievements and patient satisfaction ratings.

Exceptional Patient Care Results in National Recognition
SUMMA BARBERTON HOSPITAL
• U.S. News and World Report ranked the Transitional Care
Unit as one of
Ohio’s top eight
skilled nursing
homes.
•The State of
Ohio Department
of Aging ranked the Transitional Care Unit as #1 in
resident satisfaction in the state of Ohio.
• For the fifth time, the hospital earned the Quality
Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) award. Only 14%
of hospitals in the United States have applied for — and
received — this award.
• The Transitional Care Services Unit was awarded an
overall five-star rating, the highest given by Medicare,
as well as a five-star rating in Health Inspections and
Nursing Home Staffing.
• The oncology program earned three-year approval with
Commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the
American College of Surgeons.
• Summa Barberton Hospital’s Parkview Center is accredited
by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
(NAPBC). It is one of only seven certified centers in Ohio.
SUMMA WADSWORTH-RITTMAN HOSPITAL
• Received its 2nd consecutive
Press Ganey Summit Award

scores above the 95th
percentile as compared to
hospitals nationwide. Only
23 emergency departments
in the nation received this
prestigious honor for 2009.
• Continues to be the system
leader in patient satisfaction. Outpatient areas are
consistently — at or above — a mean score of 92
percent satisfaction throughout the entire year.
• The hospital received a letter of congratulations from
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield for improving
performance by at least 5 percentage points on the
Anthem Quality Scorecard.
We pledge to continue our efforts to provide the highest quality
care to our patients and members of our community. Thank you
for placing your health and trust in Summa Health System. n

When you are faced with a medical emergency, there is little
time to prepare for a trip to the emergency department. Taking
time to plan and prepare before something happens helps the
emergency medical team make critical decisions more quickly
because they will have accurate and detailed information about
your health conditions, current medications, allergies and
contact information for your physicians.
PREPARATION IS KEY
Choose a tote bag which can be used to store your medical
emergency information. Have everything together — and near the
door — so it is easy to grab-and-go. Tell your family and perhaps
a close neighbor or friend about the bag and its purpose.
Inside the tote bag, include a large envelope or folder for each
family member clearly marked with her/his name, address,
gender, Social Security number, birth date and emergency
contact information. Inside each include:
• A copy of personal identification (driver’s license)
• A copy of health insurance card(s)
• A list of his/her current medications (prescription and
over-the-counter), vitamins, herbs and supplements.
Include name of drug, strength, dose and frequency.
• Current health information
MAKE A DATE
Choose a time when you can assemble current health information
about yourself and each member of your family. Even if you don’t
have all the information, begin with what you do have. Be sure to
update it when conditions warrant or at least once a year.
Include the following information:
• Name of primary care physician and phone number
• Names of any medical specialists and phone numbers
• List of current medical conditions including allergies to
food, medicines or other substances
• Short summary of medical history including past health
problems, prior hospitalizations and surgeries
Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital can help. Our free kit,
“Your Trip to the ER: What You Need” includes four helpful
tools which you either read or complete and will help you
and your emergency medical team. An additional fifth tool is
helpful should you have grandchildren or other children in your
care. For your free kit, visit wrhhs.org/summitaward or call
