Adventure this way... Outback Queensland

Thargomindah Hydro Power Display

First in Australia and third in the World! In 1891 drilling commenced on a bore to supply the town with water and in 1893 an exceptionally good supply was struck at 795 metres (2650 ft) with the water coming from the bore at a temperature of 84˚C (182˚F).

Thargomindah was the first town to have reticulated bore water. The bore was the source of energy for Australia’s first hydo-electric scheme when in 1893 Thargomindah Streets were lit by means of a generator coupled to a water turbine driven by the bore’s natural water pressure. Third in the world to London and Paris to have street lighting generated by hydro power.

The original Thargomindah HospitalBuilt of local mud brick prior to 1888 and used as a Hospital until 1976 when a new facility was built in Dowling Street.

The building is now the Thargomindah Visitor Information Centre, open to the public all year round.

NoccundraNoccundra (population approx 4.) Located West of Thargomindah, Noccundra was first settled in 1882 with the establishment of the Noccundra Hotel. The historic heritage listed, Noccundra Hotel (1882), is the site of a memorial to the ill-fated Hume, who died of thirst west of the present town while searching for survivors of the lost Leichhardt Expedition. A small town with a big history. Located close to the Wilson River, where camping is available, you may even catch a fish or two. Hungerford

Hungerford (population approx. 26) is located on the Queensland/New South Wales border. The Royal Mail Hotel built in 1873 and still in use today, was originally a staging post for Cobb & Co. Currawinya National Park is only a few kilometers away and follows the old Cobb & Co. route. Hungerford holds its annual Horse & Motor-bike gymkhana in October and a bi-annual Field Day in June.

Cameron CornerCameron Corner where the three states meet - Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales. Visit the survey marker opened in 1969 and originally surveyed by John Cameron in 1882-83. The Cameron Corner Store offers air-conditioned accommodation, licensed, camping, meals, fuel, souvenirs and cold drinks.

Currawinya National ParkCurrawinya National Park was gazetted in 1991. This 151,300 hectare park features two large bodies of water - Lake Numalla, freshwater, and Lake Wyara, a salt lake. Currawinya National Park is a very popular birdwatching area and includes the rare freckled duck and many other species.

Relics of the pastoral occupation since the 1860s are scattered throughout the park. The old Caiwarro Homestead site is of particular interest to heritage enthusiasts. here the remains of numerous buildings, machinery and a levee bank create a picture of life in the past.

The Greater Bilby has disappeared from nearly 90% of its former range in Queensland. An ambitious project to re-introduce the bilby to parts of its former range is being conducted within the Bulloo Shire at Currawinya National Park. Make an effort to visit Currawinya, marvel in its natural beauty and find out about the community bilby project.

The Burke and Wills “Dig Tree”The Burke and Wills “Dig Tree” is one of Australia’s national icons and an enduring reminder of our pioneering spirit. Nappamerrie Station is proud to officially manage the site on behalf of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. Located on the northern bank of Cooper Creek the ‘Dig Tree’ is a Coolibah (Eucalyptus microtha).

A walkway has been constructed to preserve the tree. In 1898 John Dickens carved Burke’s face into another tree (the Face Tree) about 30m downstream of the Dig Tree. The site is as Burke & Wills and his companions would have viewed it nearly 140 years ago.

Lake Bindegolly National ParkLake Bindegolly National Park is located approximately 34km east of Thargomindah and due to the fragile nature of the area access is only on foot.

The park features three lakes - the saline Lakes Bindegolly and Toomaroo and the freshwater Lake Hutchinson.

The lake system has a diverse range of animals and is an important feeding and breeding habitat for waterbirds, over 60 species. A 9.2km walking circuit skirts the edge of Lake Bindegolly.

EnjoyEnjoy the experience of visiting privately owned working cattle stations and getting off the beaten track. Accommodation styles include Bed & Breakfast, camping/caravanning or spend a night in a shearers’ quarters. Some of the many experiences to be had while visiting one of our station stays include birdwatching, photography, bushwalking or simply relaxing. For more information, contact the Thargomindah Information Centre.

FishingThe Bulloo River catchment covers a total area of some 74,900 square kilometres. The main channel travels approximately 600kms through the townships of Adavale, Quilpie and Thargomindah, terminating at the Bulloo Lakes. The Bulloo River is carp free and in a relatively pristine condition. Yabbies are also readily caught. The fish species of the Bulloo River are the Bulloo Golden Perch or Yellow Belly, spangled Perch and the Moonfish or Hyrtl’s Catfish. Fishing is also available in the Wilson River, at Noccundra, Cooper Creek and along the Paroo River in Currawinya National Park at the Corni Paroo Waterhole and the Ourimperee Waterhole.

No fishing permits are required however there are bag limits for different species. For further information contact the Dept of Primary Industries & Fisheries 13 25 23.

ThargomindahThargomindah lies on the banks of the Bulloo River, 200 kilometres west of Cunnamulla and 1,000 kilometres west of Brisbane along the Adventure Way. A remarkable bushman by the name of Vincent James Dowling pioneered and settled Thargomindah Station, and in December 1874, Thargomindah was gazetted as a town. Thargomindah offers the visitor plenty to see and do, modern facilities, great accommodation and is a must to stay when travelling the outback.

Leahy Historical HouseLeahy House was built post 1885 when a deed of Grant was made to the Thargomindah Newspaper Company. The house was built from locally made mud bricks and was owned by Sir Sydney Kidman in the early 1900’s. The Bulloo Shire Council purchased the building in 1995 and the Thargomindah Historical Society were entrusted to preserve the history. It is now a Museum, open to Public, seven days a week.
