Thanksgiving Tips from the Atascocita Recycling and Disposal Facility Start a New Tradition By Making Thanksgiving A “Green” Holiday This Year This season, Waste Management challenges its customers to start a new tradition that will bring new meaning to their traditional Thanksgiving celebrations. Here are a few ways to reduce, reuse and recycle this Thanksgiving: Buy and eat locally grown food: Buying only locally grown food is a good way to have an eco-friendly Thanksgiving. Locally grown food is better for your health, the environment and contributes more to your local economy by supporting local farmers and merchants. Use recyclable bags when shopping for your holiday meal: Paper bag production consume more than 14 million trees annually in the U.S. so by using reusable bags you are reducing the amount of paper bags used. Invite the neighbors: Inviting your neighbors to share your eco-friendly Thanksgiving is an opportunity to reduce the amount of waste generated through hosting two holiday meals and is a great way to say your neighbors from making a road trip to visit family members that live far away. Make eco-friendly decorations: With a little imagination, you can create your own “green” decorations and have a lot of fun in the process. Colored construction paper can be cut into turnkey’s and harvest decorations. And when your holiday celebration is over, your decorations can be easily recycled. WM Donates to Humble Area Assistance MinistriesAfter Hurricane Harvey, the Lake Houston area businesses established the Lake Houston Area Relief Fund to provide immediate and long-term help to people and families in the area that had been impacted by the storm and its flooding.

During the November 2nd Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce BizCom meeting, Waste Management presented a check to the Lake Houston Area Relief Fund in the amount of $60,000, which will go directly to Humble Area Assistance Ministries (H.A.A.M.) to be dispersed to members of the community who are in need.

Atascocita Wildlife Habitat Update

According to the Wildlife Habitat team, the habitat at the Atascocita Recycling and Disposal Facility is flourishing. “In 2017, we witnessed a variety of butterflies and skippers in the pollinator garden including Monarch, Viceroy, Long-tail Skipper, Cloudless Sulphur, Gold-rimmed swallowtail, Gulf Fritillary, American Painted Lady, and Spotted skippers,” recounts Wildlife Habitat Team member, Sherrell Cordas. “Additionally, we have had Monarch caterpillars, Swallowtail caterpillars, and a variety of bees and bumblebees utilizing the gardens as well.”

In September, the Atascocita Wildlife Habitat was recertified by the Wildlife Habitat Council at the Gold Tier level. More information about the Wildlife Habitat Council can be found on their website, www.wildlifehc.org.
