Turf News On The Course with Scott Hillyard

The season is quickly winding down, leaves are falling, and the chill is in the air. We have a few short weeks left to put the golf course to bed for winter.

October was a very productive month. Weather was generally conducive to golf, as well as fall golf course maintenance. Approach and fairway aerification was completed with very few challenges. We have also been able to make sand topdressing applications to the tees and approaches. This creates a myriad of benefits for plant health. As for how it pertains to the player, these practices will increase firmness, ball roll and overall playability.

Despite changing weather conditions and staff size, we still have several things that need to be completed prior to snowfall. We will continue mowing down native/fescue areas until all have been completed or weather dictates we stop. Additionally, we need to

make winter plant protectant applications to all tees, greens and fairways. The irrigation system will be winterized in early November. We will also make one last sand topdressing application to greens, tees and approaches. There is one final change to our typical winter prep process. We have gone away from tarping greens over the last few years, and do not expect to resume tarping on a course wide basis in the future. Due to some desiccation that took place in select spots during previous winters, we will be placing small sections of tarp on select areas prone to excessive drying. Examples of this are the ridges on 7 and 9 greens.

Keep in mind, routine maintenance to the golf course in the month of November is minimal. Please remember to fix all ball marks, repair your divots and rake all bunkers. Following the final topdressing of greens, temporary hole locations will be place in the approaches should you wish to come out and hit some balls.

Hopefully November brings us some pleasant days for you to utilize the golf course. Thanks for a great 2015 season!

Racquet Sports with Adam Boyce

QUICK TIP - The Drive:1. Consistency – Put it in Play! Never miss a

drive in the net or wide. 2. Location, Location, Location. The rule is at the team,

through the team, but never around them. See Rule 1. 3. Placement – If you run in to a good volley team it’s time

to pick spots on the body to aim at. I like aiming for my opponent’s armpit on their dominant side. It makes for a very difficult volley. .

4. Spin – This is so much easier to do on the paddle courts than the tennis courts. Start with the paddle face slightly closed so the top edge comes first. Think smaller swings, so start at the back hip and finish to your front ear.

5. Pace – Add at your own risk…Remember step 1 ALWAYS consistency in paddle.
