CALLING ALL MEMBERS
Do you love the JDF Senior Activities Centre?
Do you love our Bits and Bites Bistro?
Do you love the 130 activities available?
If so, your support is needed! The Centre doesn’t run
itself. A volunteer Executive and Board of Directors
keeps it going and organized. They work hard and have
some tough decisions to make. ONCE A MONTH they
have to present their reports on finances; business; social
activities; kitchen needs; or any new business or topic
pertaining to the smooth operation of our Centre, to their
members.
They CANNOT act alone as we are a democratic group
and not a dictatorship. To make decisions on your
behalf, they must have a quorum at General Meetings
and need our input. The General Meeting is on the first
Thursday afternoon of each month from September to
June. It usually runs for an hour and a half, and you even
get a treat from our Bits and Bites Bistro.
Sometimes it is difficult to get a quorum SO please help.
Our Centre is the best deal in Canada at $2.14 a week
and it’s ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.
Please mark your calendar now for the first Thursday of
every month at 1:00 pm.
PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR BOARD. Thank you.
Jean Hess. See you there.

Friday, Nov 15: “Rope” at Langham Court - ticket sales CLOSE November 6th
The story, thought to be based loosely on the Leopold and Loeb murder case in 1924, concerns two young university students who have murdered fellow student Ronald Kentley as an expression of their supposed intellectual superiority. At the beginning of the play, they hide Kentley's body in a chest. They proceed to host a party for his friends and family at which the locked chest containing his corpse is used to serve a buffet. Suspicion arises among the guests as to the content of the chest. After the party, one guest, a former professor of the murderers, returns and contrives to open the chest.
The play was written in 1929 by the British playwright Patrick Hamilton. Study of his novels has been revived because of their distinctive style, which uses a narrative voice and displays a strong sympathy for the poor. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1948 film, Rope, is based on this play.
Location: 805 Langham Court
Bus Departs: 7:15 pm Show: 8:00 pm - approx 2 hours with 1 intermission Rtn: approx 10:30 pm

Friday, Dec 13: Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) at the Canadian College of Performing Arts - Ticket Sales CLOSE Nov 13th A beleaguered academic and unlikely heroine is convinced that Shakespeare’s Othello and Romeo and Juliet were never meant to be tragic. Her theory is that if a wise fool archetype were reinstated into the plays, they could not remain tragedies. However, she is too timid to show her skeptical boss, professor Claude Night, that she is right. In a moment of despair, Constance is thrown into the two Shakespearian tragedies to discover the truth about herself, and to find the lost fool with the help of Desdemona and Juliet. Commissioned and first produced by Nightwood Theatre in 1988 at Toronto's Annex Theatre. This Governor General Award-winning play is an exuberant comedy that questions what may have been lost in translation, with all those classic tropes! “One of the wildest and wooliest feminist reappraisals that the theatre has seen…” -The Globe and Mail
Location: 701 Elgin Rd Departure: 6:45 PM Start time: 7:30 PM Run time: 2.5 hours with 1 intermission Return time: approx. 10:30
Price: $30

SHORT MAT BOWLING
We had our first trial of Short Mat Bowling on Sunday, September 15th, and the auditorium was not available, so we managed to set up in the lounge. It was tight but we still managed to roll our bowls and have a few laughs. The experienced carpet bowlers did better than our regular lawn bowlers. They adjusted quite well to the longer mat and larger bowls. It was good to see them come out to give it a try. The regular lawn bowlers worked on slowing down to fit the short mat as opposed to the longer outdoor greens. I'm sure we will all be pros soon.
We are still working on tweaking the fine points. At the moment the schedule includes one session on Sunday and one on Monday from 1 to 3 pm. As interest increases we may have sessions from 3 to 5pm on Sunday and Monday but we would need another co-ordinator/class leader. If we cannot use the auditorium on a Sunday due to a previous Westshore commitment we can set up the mats using both sections in the lounge as long as the lounge is not pre-booked for another Centre activity.
The days that the auditorium (or lounge) is not available in October are Monday, October 7 (due to Choir practice) & 14th (Centre is closed for Thanksgiving) & Sunday October 20th. There will be no short mat on those days. On Sunday October 6th we can use the lounge instead of the auditorium. On Sunday October 27th we will start around 2 pm as ESS has booked the auditorium from 9 to 2 that day.
I will be away on a cruise from October 6th to October 22nd but Georgie Arndt has offered to help as long as someone else will help her with organizing the games. If no one will help then we will have to cancel Oct 6th, 13th and 21st. The other changes are noted above. Any questions, please contact Sharon Kennedy, email [email protected] (first choice) or phone 250-478-5847.
