THE FIRST THANKSGIVING• The MAYFLOWER landed in Massachusetts Bay in 1620 where

the PILGRIMS established Plymouth Village

THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

• Pilgrims had brutal First Winter

• Suffered from cold, starvation, disease

• Only HALF of the crew members from the Mayflower survived their first winter: 51

• In March, met Squanto, a Native American who knew how to speak English

• Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to survive – how to catch animals, cook, harvest, treat illness

• Squanto also introduced the Pilgrims to the Wampanoag, a local Native American tribe

THE FIRST THANKSGIVING• In November 1621, after the Pilgrims had their first CORN

HARVEST, they had a celebratory feast• Festival lasted for 3 days• Both Pilgrims and Indians prepared foods• Feast included: fish, berries, lobster, dried fruit, venison

• In 1789, George Washington issued a Thanksgiving proclamation which called upon days of giving thanks

THANKSGIVING TODAY• Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of

November

• One of the US’s biggest holidays

• Schools are out for the week, people get off work

• Families gather for a big Thanksgiving meal
