County Health Department Director PinellasHealth.com 727-824-6900 2017 DOH-PINELLAS HIGHLIGHTS DOH-Pinellas was one of three county health departments to lead a pilot program that allowed those agencies to engage with their communities and share local public-health information via Twitter. The first @HealthyPinellas tweets in August 2016 featured information about Governor Rick Scott’s visit to Pinellas to discuss Zika. With technical assistance from the DOH-Pinellas Tobacco Prevention Program, St. Petersburg College (SPC) became a tobacco-free institution on August 1, 2016. SPC joined 32 other tobacco-free colleges and universities in Florida. The tobacco team helped create the policy that was unanimously voted on by board members. In March 2016, DOH-Pinellas was recognized as Public Health Ready by the National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The “Project Public Health Ready” recognition confirmed that DOH-Pinellas has a thorough and coordinated emergency response plan in place and that staff has the training to protect the health of the community during an emergency. A three-year CDC Partnerships to Improve Community Health (PICH) grant, which ended in September 2017, provided funding for DOH- Pinellas to work with municipalities and partnering agencies on initiatives to improve access to physical activity and better nutrition. Among the grant’s many accomplishments: 20 outdoor fitness zones, 18 bicycle fix-it stations and dozens of bottle-filling water fountains were installed throughout the county. To make sure breastfeeding moms have the support they need to continue helping their babies grow, DOH-Pinellas created the Breastfeeding Warm Line in August 2017. The Warm Line is answered by a peer counselor on call. Anyone can dial 727-824-6997 with questions or breastfeeding issues. Fiscal Year 2016-2017
