THANKS TO OUR CONCERT PARTNER
NOvember 30, 2019 7:30pm December 1, 2019 3pm
Montrose Pavilion
Featuring local talent from within our ranks, the winter concert highlights the remarkable gifts of our orchestra members and few guests. Favorite established repertoire, like Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet, and the tenor's aria from The Elixir of Love opera by Donizetti, will be presented alongside exciting compositional premiers from the oboe, bass, and viola sections.
Joining new and old forms of spiritually connecting music, the headliner piece, High Lonesome Bluegrass Mass, combines etheric choral music and bluegrass. Guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass, and piano back the chorus to take you through a lifetime, blending dissonance and beauty into a soaring depiction of life and spiritual harmony. Full of feel-good music from an eclectic mix of writers, you will be uplifted, inspired, and a little closer to true joy.
The orchestra welcomes the Valley Youth Orchestra in a combined concert about honor and respect. Repertoire will include a salute to America as well as pay tribute to popular American music icons Sinatra and Elvis, and legendary British bands The Beatles, The Who, and Queen.

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT VIVIAN CHENEYThe VSA orchestra longevity award easily goes to violinist
Vivian Cheney, 93, of Paonia. She has been playing the violin for 86 years and active with the VSA for 43 years (since 1976).
Originally from Troy, KS, Vivian’s orchestra days began at Kansas University. She wasn’t part of a performance group for 15 years during relocations to St. Joseph, MO, and St. Louis, MO. Once she settled in Paonia 43 years ago, she joined the VSA.
Vivian was a school teacher for 50 years and always looked forward to Thursday evening rehearsals. “After teaching middle school all week, my colleague [long-time VSA violinist and VYO founder] Lu Vorys and I thought Thursday night orchestra was the high point of our week!” She now fills her days volunteering with senior citizens, playing church organ, and bridge.
“There is a real satisfaction in being a part of this kind of group," she said. When asked about the age range of VSA musicians, “It’s a joy to play alongside young people; we really do complement each other.”
Vivian has many fond, funny, and touching memories from her decades with the VSA. “I remember a year when there were only two second violins,” she said. “And then there was the concertmaster who brought her dog to rehearsals!” She also recalled, “…the years with few listeners—and now look at what [VSA founder] Wilma [Lowell] started!”
MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT VIC FRANKSBoulder native Vic Franks started singing at Burbank Junior
High School and Fairview High School. He sang with the Boulder Chorale community choir after high school and has been part of large choirs, as well as madrigal and show choirs.
He worked his way through CU over the course of 20 years. “Yes, 20 years! I was a professional student, amassing about twice the credit hours needed for my bachelor’s degree.” He holds double majors in marketing and management and a minor in political science.
Vic moved to Paonia in 2001 and joined the Grand Mesa Singers, which became the VSA chorus when it merged under the VSA umbrella in 2002. He has taken occasional breaks from the tenor section, notably in 2010, when he “…was too sad to sing the Christmas concert after losing my mother, especially since her birthday was Christmas Day.”
He worked for a grocery chain for 28 years and dabbled in politics as a candidate for state representative in Boulder and later briefly on the Western Slope.
In 2007, he became a transportation security officer with TSA at the Montrose Airport. He likes to run, bike, lift weights, cook, and bake, and plans, “…after talking about it for 30 years—not being one to rush into anything—to be an entrepreneur making cologne and perfume.”
“I love my friends in the VSA. There is so much talent—a wide range—yet all are welcome. We both learn and make better music, and thoroughly enjoy our time together!”
