Guided reading answers So let us after lunch (1pm) post any issues we had with this first chapter. We can spend about half an hour going over sentences and phrases you were not sure of. Try and help each other with what you think and we will pool our knowledge.

Chapter two part 1.

1. Where were Sabryna’s family bedrooms in the cottage? Sabryna and her family had to go up into the loft to access their bedrooms.

2. Why do you think Mr Strongarm would not stop using fertiliser, even though the farm had be prosperous in the past? Mr Strongarm would not stop using fertiliser because the crops grew better and quicker, which led to him to grow more, so therefore make him more prosperous (earn more money).

3. Where do you think Sabryna picked up a stone talisman? Sabryna knew the river had carried the stone all the way from the mountains, which is where she had seen the River Goddess. The talisman, was to remind her of Dia and her message/mission. (or similar)

4. Why were the millers having to build new factories in the next village and why were they so stubborn about Sabryna’s message? The millers were having to build new factories because the river level was so low it was not turning the water wheel, so they had not got power for the mill. After listening to Sabryna’s they still could not see the connection of looking after the river and were only interested in earning a living for themselves, they were being narrow minded in their approach. (or similar)

5. Why was Sabryna the next morning when they set off at dawn? Sabryna was not convinced that people further down the river would listen to her message from Dia.

6. What does it mean by’ ‘they passed through a narrow gorge on the way…’? A narrow gorge is where stone is high on either side of you because the river has cut through it over time and narrow means, not very wide, so the path they are travelling on runs along the same path as the river between rock walls that are close together. (or similar)

7. Why would Sabryna find help at the temple in the town? The temple was dedicated to the river spirit Dia, who was the one that had given the message to Sabryna.

8. Why did Sabryna think the lake was sick after going down to see the fisherfolk? The fisherfolk’s boats were alchemically powered and the boats belched purple oils into the lake water.

9. What is similar to the message Sabryna gave to the millers and the fisherfolk? The similar message is to look after the river and give it time to heal from the alchemical chemicals being washed into it.

10. Do you think the fisherfolk will listen to Sabyna’s message and why? No, because they are only worried about themselves and do not see the bigger picture of looking after the river and lake. (or similar)

SPAG We have covered this several times before and some are still getting muddled, so here we will be mixing all the different ways we use apostrophes. I have found a good breakdown and I am asking you to work your way through the questions. Answers will be posted tomorrow. Ask yourself this, is it a contraction or is it showing me who/what owns something.

Now make 10 of your own sentences, perhaps using spelling words.

House of Rock Family Challenge!

We thought it might be fun to see how musical you and your families are, so we have decided to organise a “House of Rock” challenge for you all. We would like you to form a band with members of your family and record your performance so that we can put it all together into a virtual concert! Please ensure all your performances are added to your class Padlet or on Tapestry (for Reception pupils) by Friday 1st May. Below are the steps you will need to follow:

Form your own band Get everyone at home together and choose a band name. What type of music do you like? Talk about your favourite songs, artists. If you can use technology to play these songs to each other and talk about what you think. You could have a good sing and dance along at the same time.

Select your instruments Everyone needs to choose 2 different objects from around the house. Make sure that all of the objects make different sounds. Now it’s rehearsal time… You could even make your own instruments out of items you have saved for recycling.

Performance When you have rehearsed, record a performance and post to your class padlet or Tapestry (for Reception pupils). We will then collate all of your performances together to create a virtual concert and share it on the school website.
