sustAininG PiCKeRinG CoLLeGe is a responsibility and a privilege our community shares. through the investment of your charitable donations and support for events, Pickering implements leading-edge educational practices and technologies, provides financial aid for deserving students, and maintains and improves the bricks and mortar of our campus.

this sense of responsibility amongst our community towards our school is what helps Pickering to thrive, 170 years into our shared history. it is an exciting and vibrant place and the events and celebrations of the 2011–2012 school year were testament to this. through the unflagging efforts of event chairs and committees, including Chairs nancy Prittie and Donna Rouselle of the 7th Holiday Home tour, Mirella Morra and steve Widdrington of the Hollywood on the Hilltop Gala, Mitch stevenson of the 13th Golf tournament, and Lisa Marshall of the 8th spring Luncheon, our community of alumni, parents, past parents, sponsors, friends and staff gathered together for the pleasure of one another’s company, and to raise funds for our school. Thank you to everyone involved in our events, for organizing and participating, and especially to the wonderful, hard-working volunteers.

Thank you to all who gave to the Annual Fund, to help bridge the gap between tuition and the cost of operating our school at the level of excellence our students and parents expect. We very much appreciate Kelly Mason’s kindness in taking on the new role of Chair, Annual Fund. Thank you to all, especially our generous alumni, who have contributed to endowments to provide financial aid for deserving students and for the long-term benefit of educational programs at PC. Thank you to all who helped with donations to capital projects, such as our accessibility lift and the Learning Commons. Your investments in our school ensure our sustainability and give us a competitive edge in today’s demanding educational environment.

All of us are a part of this community, helping to prepare our students to take the values they learn here and apply them to better the world around them. And we are seeing results with our students and with our alumni, who are winning accolades for their community efforts and who are leading in the business world. they tell us how grateful they are for the experience they had, here at Pickering College. Thank you for helping to make that experience the best it can be, through your donations and support for events.

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. no one who lights a candle hides it under a bushel basket, but places it on a lampstand, so it can give light to all.”

i can’t tell you how many times i’ve heard this simple three-sentence message at PC. However it is one of the many messages that have inspired me to become the person i am today.

Good evening teachers, parents, staff, and friends, my name is Kevin tan and i will be speaking to you tonight about how and why PC provides the right learning environment for me…

As some of you in the room probably know i started PC in Kindergarten. PC was much different from what it is now. there was no student lounge, no egan House, tuck shop was in new House, and there were no Waffle Wednesdays! Anyhow, there are two things that have stayed with PC since i was in Kindergarten. it still has these constants as i enter High school. these are PC’s values and its sense of community....

PC’s values are steadfast, strong, and unwavering. You can tell that all of the staff, especially Mr. sturrup, care about the students and want them to be as prepared for the future as they can be... For as we, the students, the children of the next generation grow up in an environment which is kind and free of hate, discrimination and intolerance, we become strong, influential people who are not afraid to explore life.

But the value i really think PC has managed to pull off well is one that many schools all across Canada struggle to have…it is the community here that makes PC so great. it is the community that allows everyone at the school to feel safe. it is the community that allows everyone to look at each other as caring friends…

i know you might be asking yourself: “How does PC provide such a great community? A school is a school, is it not?” there is an important message. it’s a four word sentence, and it is a part of a passage Mr. Boyd reads every year at the Closing Meeting for Worship. the people are Pickering. think about it. the people are Pickering. it is the fact that the teachers, the staff, the parents, and the student care so much for Pickering that it becomes something in itself—a community of children, teenagers, and adults that thrives. And when people leave Pickering they never forget it, because of all of the friends and relationships they make when they’re there. that’s what makes PC stand out from the rest of the schools…

How and why does PC foster such a great learning environment? Here’s why. it’s because PC actually tries, with a dedicated teaching staff willing to contribute beyond their job description, a community of involved parents and a compassionate vision that balances excellence with service.

And i’d like to leave you again with that simple message. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. no one who lights a candle hides it under a bushel basket, but places it on a lampstand, so it can give light to all.”

thank you.

Circle of Friends donors choose to make annual gifts of $1,000 or more. These Leadership Donors are

celebrated annually at the PC Circle of Friends event in the fall. This year, we were honoured to have

a wonderful range of speakers at the Circle of Friends Reception held at The Summit Golf & Country

Club. Please enjoy their words.

Kelly MaSon, Chair, annual fund and ParenT, wiTh MalColM, of daniel MaSon ’18exCerPTS froM CirCle of friendS reCePTion addreSS

Good evening, i am here to talk about that itchy scratchy, i-don’t-want-to-hear-about-it topic—the Annual Fund. it definitely sparks a lot of conversation, and, over the years i have gained a lot of respect for it. Respect specifically for the impact it has on a Pickering College education. i say that because i believe that a PC education is massively different from any other independent school education.

Let me explain. When Malcolm and i were looking at schools for Daniel, we interviewed at a number of private and independent schools in the area. My criteria was fairly simple; After all, he was only five—i knew that the academics were a given. What i really wanted was a place that would nurture the kind heart that we had encouraged in our son. i did not want it to get lost in a system that

had their own thoughts on what the ideal student should be at the end of his/her school career. i wanted a thoughtful, socially responsible experience that encouraged my son to explore his own qualities and capabilities and guide him to be the very best person he could be so he could take that out into the world with confidence.

it is the Quaker view that the object of education is “to give every opportunity for the good principle in the soul to be heard”. that’s what i found here. not a perfect world—but a real one. Challenging, thoughtful and cutting edge in its teaching philosophy and its programs…

today, we have an entire segment of the strategic Plan dedicated to enhanced teaching and learning. And, we are at the forefront with a faculty dedicated to enriching our children’s learning experiences.

so, when i said earlier that the academics, in my mind, were a given, i mean that i expect cutting edge learning. And cutting edge learning comes with a price tag. What is that price tag? And why should i pay it? isn’t it enough that i pay a substantial amount in tuition? if i donate to PC, am i not just helping children who are already getting a privileged education?

Recently i got an email from a parent who is working on developing transformational partnerships for PC’s strategic Plan. i would like to read you an excerpt from his email.

“Part of what attracted our family to PC was its philosophy of community service, social responsibility, and trying to leave the world a better place. As i gained experience with the school, i saw how the school lived its philosophy, how it imparted it to the students, and how alumni seemed to take it with them when they graduated. i started to see a way to justify giving to the school. Perhaps students who leave the school become advocates and champions of compassion, community-mindedness, and social responsibility. Because they live in the developed world, they have a much greater possibility of one day holding positions of power and influence. increasing the presence of such values amongst those who hold power can possibly go a very long way towards making the world a better place. Maybe that one PC student that benefits from your financial support can go on to help thousands—or millions—of less-advantaged people in the world. From that perspective, donating to PC may represent a very effective way to create a long-term positive change in the world.”…

For our generous parents, past parents, friends and alumni, there are opportunities to support tomorrow’s leaders through the Annual Fund, scholarships and bursaries, funding improvements to our campus buildings, by participating in events and remaining an active part of this remarkable community.

so simple. so necessary.

thank you for your support. Please know that you are making a difference.

The learninG CoMMonS (liBrary) TriBuTe ProGraMGillian Arkless, mother of new alumni Christopher ’12 and thomas ’12, has made a significant impact on the lives of students at Pickering College.

For eight years, Gillian coordinated the Learning Commons (Library) tribute Program, recognizing student birthdays and enhancing the PC library print collec-tion. PC teacher and librarian Janet Downer notes that, “the tribute Program has been running for the past 12 years, and has benefitted from the efforts of wonder-ful volunteers, Gillian a star among them. she has been instrumental in cultivating this program! she always had great ideas for its success, such as encouraging more senior school parents to get and stay involved, to help increase resources available for older students. i enjoy working with her very much, and am delighted that Gillian has seen such success for her volunteer efforts.”

By encouraging contributions in recognition of a child’s birthday, Gillian’s efforts have resulted in hundreds of new books in our Learning Commons. Karen Whetstone, past Chair of the PCA says, “i know how excited [my daughter] Meg would be to know a new book was arriving in the library, with her name appearing in it! thank you, Gillian, for promoting this wonderful program that deepens the love of reading and literature in our children.”

the Learning Commons (Library) tribute Program continues under the leadership of Junior school parent Rosemarie Benjamin. But the last word should be Gillian’s, and she responds, “Parents are really supportive of the initiative, and i’ve enjoyed making this contribution to life at Pickering.” thank you Gillian!

The dininG hall Chair dediCaTion ProGraM

You can celebrate your family’s memo-ries of Pickering College and leave a lasting legacy through the dedication of a Dining Hall chair and/or table. An engraved plaque will be placed on each chair and/or table that is dedicated.

throughout the school year, current students will enjoy seeking out “their” chair, and when they leave PC and re-turn to visit, they will be pleased to know that there will always be a seat at the table for them. Holiday Home tour committee Chairs also receive this trib-ute in honour of their service.

if you have any questions or would like more information about the Dining Hall Chair Dedication Program, please con-tact Alana simon in the Development office at 905-895-1700 ext. 254 or email: [email protected].

Endowment giving offers opportunity to create a lasting legacy. Endowment gifts are not spent, they

are invested in perpetuity, with the income providing a stable source of annual funding to support the

school’s priorities. These funds are, in a very tangible way, a gift from those who have loved and supported

Pickering College to the generations of students who will experience our community in the future.

Last year, alumnus James Brown ’69 led an initiative to build an endowment in memory of Don Menard, coach, teacher and mentor at Pickering from 1953–1988. Don passed away in April of 2011, shortly after James and a number of other 60s alumni had a chance to visit with him, part of a reunion organized by Greg Dopulos ’68.

Don was recognized for his exceptional ability to bring out the best in every student as an athlete. He coached a number of football teams to championships and helped many students to develop a love of sport. over 25 alumni have responded to this appeal so far. Marnie Menard, Don’s daughter, who grew up on the Pickering campus, was honoured by the many memories of her father that were provided by alumni. these happy memories gave the family much comfort.

thank you to everyone who has helped establish the Don Menard Memorial Fund to remember “the Griz”, a favourite teacher and coach, and thank you to all who have generously donated to Pickering College endowment funds. over the last year, new endowments have been established for Barney Jackson, Don Menard, and in honour of Peter sturrup’s 25-year tenure at Pickering College, a Headmaster’s Bursary Fund.

endowments help ensure the future of our school by providing a steady source of income and support, whether in providing financial aid or supporting specific programs at the school as do the Allan Family Fund, the Joshua Weinzweig Creative Writing Program Fund, and the eric Veale Memorial Arena Fund. We must continue to grow our endowment funds, especially to make it possible to provide enough financial aid for deserving students from Canada and around the world. thank you for your help!

staff and students, parents and friends, i cannot tell you how privileged i am to stand up here and speak to all of you. But even being the last one to speak, i have neither the authority nor the ability to draw a conclusion to this. My classmates, i only hope my words can inspire you and help you understand the meaning of this day which you all have been expecting for a long time. When i was writing this speech, the very first question that occurred to me is “how can i, being here for only three years, represent every one?” the class is so diverse, consisting of people from different cultural backgrounds, people from different family backgrounds and people came from different schools at different time. But soon i realized these concerns are totally unnecessary. i did not search for

the meaning of graduation because i know it’s my graduation and no one but me has the answer. Just like it is absurd to ask others the meaning of your life, because it’s your life and no one can tell you. so let us just conclude, the meaning of graduation, i cannot tell you, for the answer is in you. …My fellow graduates, what is celebrated today is the life you have lived thus far, is the person you have become, is what awaits you in the future. therefore what i want to achieve is to help you reflect on and understand your life…

i’d like to take this moment to say thank you to all the teachers, not only the teachers of PC but all the teachers we have learned from. teaching is the noblest profession of all. unlike others who apply their knowledge to things, they impart their knowledge to our minds. A good teacher is even greater than a good doctor. the latter extends life. the former alters the course of it. “A teacher affects eternity, they can never tell where their influence stops.” said Henry Adams. Here at PC, i have learned not only academics, but how to think independently. the teachers not only taught us knowledge, but by the very demonstration of their own showed us the meaning of dedication. they are extremely devoted to confuse our minds with formulas and concepts. Just like Maverick would often say in philosophy class, with his thoughtful facial expression “What is time?” they tirelessly remind us about our exposed shirts. thank you, even though at times many of us were driven crazy by calculus or chemistry. even the influence of your unconscious acts will be a life-long lesson to us…

Many of you will find, on this day that you have been longing for, it is truly hard to say goodbye. Here at PC, our second home, where the need of every person is respected, where friends were made, where opportunity is provided, where there a dog named sandy always greets us with her innocent eyes, we have grown more mature physically and mentally. Here on the hilltop, a magnificent tree runs its roots deep into the ground. Life isn’t fair. While many parts of the world are suffering, we certainly should be grateful for having such a great environment…

As i said, i cannot tell you what graduation means to you. the answer is in you. so please promise yourself, after you step out of the school today, no matter where you are heading, you will start thinking about the life you lived, do not let the memory go, do not forget the people who influenced you.

today we say goodbye to the scheduled life style we are accustomed to since forever. We say goodbye to our beloved uniform which we certainly doubt that we will put on again. We say goodbye to our friends, for now. We say goodbye to the spicy chicken from Main Garden. Yet today is just another Derrick’s birthday…thoreau said “i know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of a man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor.” Your future is in your hands.

Each year, the graduating class chooses a few students to put forward to the faculty as their best

candidates for Valedictorian. In 2011–2012, it was a particularly difficult decision for the faculty as the

candidates were all deserving. In the end, the honour went to Tan Tan, whose words go to the heart

of a rich Pickering College experience.

Thank you to all who supported The Pillars Restoration Project.

the Pillars Restoration Project

For those of you who have climbed the new granite steps, you know the school looks even more majestic than it ever has. Modern waterproofing, concrete maintenance, stair construction and finishes will keep the front of Rogers House looking magnificent through the next century. Additionally, we added an accessibility lift into Rogers House, which has been a welcome addition to our school.

the next steps for Rogers House include fixing the roof and improving the inside foyer and main halls, critical parts of the overall Facilities Master Plan. For more information on the Facilities Master Plan, including new buildings and strategic planning for the future, contact Peter sturrup, Headmaster: [email protected] or (905) 895-1700.

STudenTS helPinG STudenTS Junior school student sydney Desforges, Grade 3, chose to make Pickering College a charity of her choice. sydney chose two charities to support in lieu of gifts for her 9th birthday. she requested that if a guest would like to give her a gift, that they make a donation to either the Pickering College Annual Fund or the Farley Foundation. When asked why sydney chose PC as one of her chari-ties, she answered, “i think that i have enough stuff and i think that other people who don’t should have the same chance to go to our school and learn like we do.”

PC is grateful to have thoughtful and generous students such as sydney.

“al’S diner” Pickering College produced two sold out shows of the popular musical Grease in April 2012. in support of the Class of 2012 Grad Gift, the Floyd family and the Rosen/Baz family transformed the student Lounge into a 50s inspired diner, fondly referred to as “Al’s Diner”.

Burgers and fries, root beer floats and retro bottles of pop were served by student volunteers. And thanks to Grade 12 parent, Ms. Heese, intermission snacks of caramel popcorn and cookies were served by our student Co-Chair, Grade 12 Fundraising Committee, Jonathan Barber. We were also very lucky to have Grade 12 student Alycia

H u b b a r d donate two f a b u l o u s burger cakes! unique works of art unto themselves, the cakes, along with

three beautiful swarovski crystal bracelets, were raffled off before the start of Act 2 each night.

Additional student fundraising initiatives for Grad Gift 2012 included the sale of gingerbread houses at the Holiday Home tour boutique, and Ruby Dai, student Co-Chair, Grade 12 Fundraising Committee, sold easter cookies and prom corsages.

thank you to our students and generous parent donors for their time and effort.

including a bequest to Pickering College in your will celebrates your time spent here, and acknowledges the future needs of our school. What a wonderful way to leave a legacy that can be appreciated by coming generations of students!

there are significant benefits to the donor in leaving a planned gift such as a bequest. Recognition opportunities, which will carry the donor’s name into perpetuity, can be discussed as part of each gift. there can also be significant tax benefits to your estate when you make a charitable gift part of your will.

Already, Pickering College has a group of legacy givers who have remembered Pickering College in their wills, or have given gifts of life insurance. included are alumni, past faculty and staff, and past parents. these individuals are known as “the Firelighters.”

this year, former teacher and alumni ambassador Charles Boyd joined “the Firelighters.” Charles has decided to leave his farm, Blue and silver stables, to Pickering College in his will, and in fact, the farm is in use right now for student learning. thank you, Mr. Boyd! “The firelighters” are a community of caring people who, through remembering Pickering College with future gifts in their wills, keep the lamp of learning lit into the future.

will you join our community of firelighters?

Please contact Kim Bilous for more information on leaving a gift to PC in your will, or other estate planning opportunities: [email protected] or 905 895 1120 x 260.

Let the Firelighters Come! Many PC students attended and/or acted as counsellors at the legendary Statten and Mazinaw camps

in years past. Taylor Statten was a teacher here in the 1940s, and famous for his children’s camps,

which many PC students attended. The Mazinaw camp was started by Reginald “Blackie” Blackstock

(PC’s first athletic director), and was also well-attended by PC students. Every evening, a camp’s fire

pit would be stacked with wood, then the young campers would gather around in the early evening

dusk. A scout would shout “Let the firelighters come!” and four senior campers would come from the

four winds, bearing torches to light the fire. After such a dramatic beginning, the fire would be lit, and

the teaching and story sharing for the evening would begin. The firelighters were essential.

Fire, lamp and light imagery abound at Pickering College. The symbol of PC is a lamp—the lamp of

learning. The school was built on a hilltop, to act as a beacon to the world, and our school hymn,

Jerusalem, calls for a “Chariot of Fire.”
