WHAT IS UNITED WAY?The United Way of Greater High Point mobilizes the business community, volunteers, and its 28 local partner agencies to develop resources and partnerships that address critical human service needs in our community. Our focus is on Education, Financial Stability, and Health, because these are the “building blocks” for a good quality of life for each of us. United Way-funded programs help children learn and families thrive, build self-sufficiency and independence, create stronger and safer neighborhoods, and improve the health of our communities.

OUR GOALSInvesting in education: Children are prepared for success in school and in life. Families have the tools they need to successfully meet the challenges of parenting. High quality youth development and mentoring programs are available to keep at-risk kids on track to high school graduation--and beyond.

Focusing on financial stability: People in crisis or transition successfully access the community resources they need. Individuals --including older adults and people with disabilities - as well as those who struggle with unemployment, under-employment, and homelessness - have the potential to live as independently as possible, through programs funded by donations to United Way.

Providing programs that encourage health: An individual’s potential to be physically, mentally, and emotionally well is fully-realized. Families are strengthened and cases of child abuse and neglect are reduced.

All non-profit organizations, like any business entity, have overhead costs. Our United Way, in the interest of good stewardship of the donations entrusted to us, strives to keep our overhead costs low. We invest as much as possible into health and human service programs at our 28 partner agencies, as well as other high impact partnerships such as The BackPack Program, United Way Children’s Initiatives, and Venture Grants. You can find out much more by visiting our website at www.unitedwayhp.org.

We also encourage you to compare United Way of Greater High Point’s overhead costs to those of other non-profit organizations. You’ll find that ours is a very competitive rate, especially considering the national average for non-profits generally stands around 25%. For more information, please visit the North Carolina Secretary of State’s website at www.secretary.state.nc.us/csl.

Tabatha and Caitlyn have been matched since 2011 when Caitlyn was

a first grader at Archdale Elementary and Tabatha was a sophomore at Wheatmore

High School. Tabatha has been a constant support for Caitlyn. They work on Caitlyn’s

homework and love the playground. Caitlyn and Tabatha both say they feel like

they are “real” sisters. They are an example of the strong friendships and bonds that

are formed through Big Brothers Big Sisters, a United Way funded partner agency.

What is a Venture Grant?United Way Venture Grants are small grants awarded to qualified local non-profit organizations and are designed to help meet emerging or unmet needs. They can be used to help get a new program started, or help an existing program purchase needed equipment or supplies. In more limited cases, Venture Grants may be given for administrative expenses, such as staffing, so that a program can increase its sustainability with the support that paid staff can provide.

A committee of community volunteers participated in a structured application review and scoring process for all Venture Grant applicants. Factors considered included community need, opportunities for collaboration with other organizations, ability to secure additional funding, and potential for measurable outcomes/results.
