“ e So Wise So Young program has been a tremendous addition to the curriculum for our second grade students. While experiencing the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, students not only enhanced their literacy skills and extended their spoken and written vocabulary, they also developed an understanding of and appreciation for works of Shakespeare. We are excited to continue this program with Livermore Shakespeare Festival.”

Peggy was a core member of the theater company, serving on the founding board of Shakespeare’s Associates, the dramaturg for all productions since 2004 until 2014, and a dear friend. She helped many artists to a deeper understanding of the text and to more vibrant performances.

She strengthened the company through her wisdom, leadership and many hours of “roll-up-your-sleeves” volunteering. And she hosted parties in her home, reminding us to celebrate our successes together. Peggy and her family generously supported our Apprentice Program.

To honor Peggy’s memory, we have created the “Peggy Riley Apprenticeship” for an outstanding apprentice who shows a deep commitment to honing their craft, mastering the text and who signicantly contributes to the whole of Livermore Shakespeare Festival.

LSF 2016 Peggy Riley Apprentice Teagan Fish

— Teagan Fish

It is with great pleasure that Teagan Fish begins her dramaturgical career with LSF. Her love for language and literature and her history with LSF (beginning in 2008 with an acting summer camp led by Russell Marcel) naturally brought her to the dramaturgy apprenticeship for LSF 2016. What makes Shakespeare a timeless favorite is his treatment of the human condition. Dramaturgy helps the actors and audience access his genius.

“Each denition, each insight into a phrase or action is a hidden gem waiting to be picked up. My favorite is discovering a joke that was hiding under dusty layers of Early Modern English.”

SYNOPSIS | THE TEMPEST

DIRECTOR’S NOTES | THE TEMPEST by Lisa A. Tromovitch

Prospero, a man obsessed with the power of magic, was once Duke of Milan. Distracted by his studies, he failed to prevent his brother Antonio, with the help of the Queen of Naples, from usurping the dukedom and banishing him and his 3 year-old daughter, Miranda. The compassionate lord Gonzalo outfitted a boat with supplies and they were set adrift, landing on an island inhabited by magic spirits, and an orphaned son of witch, Caliban. Twelve years later the heavens offer Prospero a 4-hour window during which rescue is possible. With the help of the powerful sprite Ariel, he raises a tempest bringing to shore his brother, the Queen, her son Ferdinand, her sister Sébastienne, and their entourage in an apparent shipwreck. Prospero works to bring his daughter and Ferdinand together, thereby making her future Queen. He exacts revenge on those who wronged him, and ultimately, both he and the other royals realize that personal transformation is possible. Life is short; perspective hard won.

“We are such stu as dreams are made on.” The last of Shakespeare’s plays, The Tempest is often considered his farewell to the theater. When Prospero vows to drown his book and break his staff, we imagine Shakespeare committing to a return to rural life at Stratford-upon-Avon, leaving playwriting behind. In this magical play, a complexity of themes emerges. An artist embraces the seductive power of art. We explore the relationship of the colonist and the colonized. Leaders realize the inherent responsibility in invested power. Those wronged accept that while we might crave revenge, forgiveness may get us what we need. At the 2016 Shakespeare in Prisons: in Practice conference, I met formerly incarcerated men who have experienced deep personal transformations. They had time in prison to explore Shakespeare’s characters, and learned through the study of the plays to analyze their own reactions to the world and other possibilities to exercise power. They learned first to empathize with their characters, then to experience compassion for others, and ultimately to accept their own humanity. Their stories were inspiring. Knowing I was directing The Tempest, my mind moved to the experience of the incarcerated. Prospero is incarcerated on the island. He in turn enslaves Caliban and Ariel. “Victims victimize.” Yet, as with the men I met, he has had time to think, to read, to study. He resolves to relinquish his daughter to adulthood, marriage, and to return her to civilization. In the end, he releases Ariel, and I argue, Caliban. Early in the play, Prospero acknowledges his part in his predicament, the relinquishing of his leadership duties to his brother. Later, he better acknowledges and appreciates Ariel. Toward the end, he acknowledges the hand he played in raising Caliban. “This thing of darkness, I acknowledge mine.” (How does one expect a slave to respond to his world?) Prospero cannot be ready to return to civilization until he has made this transformation, from one seduced by power to a compassionate person, humane, mortal. He knows the appropriate exercise of power is within the law, with compassion for others, and he desires a return to his role in the community.

SYNOPSIS | PERSUASION

DIRECTOR’S NOTES | PERSUASION by Mary Ann Rodgers

Sir Walter Elliot is forced to rent the family home due to the debts he has acquired by carelessly spending his income. He and his eldest daughter relocate to Bath leaving Anne to prepare the house for the new tenants and care for her sick sister, Mary. Anne discovers that the new tenants are related to a man to whom she was once engaged. She was persuaded to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth because of his lack of place in society. Brokenhearted and angry, he left town, joined the Royal Navy, and has returned a hero and wealthy man. When they meet, Captain Wentworth shows no interest in Anne, but does enjoy time with her young friends, Henrietta and Louisa Musgrove. Louisa Musgrove is lively and amiable, and all see the potential for a possible marriage. Anne returns to Bath where she is courted by her cousin and the man due to inherit Kellynch, Mr. Elliot. This is thought to be a good match by all of society. She discovers that Louisa has become engaged to one of Captain Wentworth’s friends. Captain Wentworth appears in Bath and discovers that Anne seems to be seriously involved with Mr. Elliot. Is it possible that Frederick and Anne will be given a second chance? Or will the reunion be impossible due to the influences of family, society, and “yielding to persuasion”?

Jane Austen and Jennifer Le Blanc are two very smart women. Jane Austen’s ability to capture the manners and customs of daily life, combined with her ability to draw characters so clearly that we simultaneously smile and cringe, are why we continue to read and reread her works. Jennifer Le Blanc’s ability to translate Jane Austen to the language of theater – and theater for today -- speaks to her equally incisive mind and wit. Both of these women function well in polite society and both, have no doubt, are astute social satirists. We are currently in rehearsals and hearing Jane’s and Jenn’s words out loud. We all have been struck by the beauty of the language and the subtlety of the wit. Everything in the script is intentional and playable. The cast of intelligent, skilled, dedicated, and witty actors you will see tonight have further illuminated the characters they play with their attention to the specifics and their quest for truth. The play is set in the fall of 1814 in Somersetshire, Lyme, and Bath, during the short peace that Great Britain had before Napoleon’s escape from Elba in 1815. The novel was completed in 1816 after the peace had been secured. The Captains of the Royal Navy were celebrities; Captain Wentworth, who joined the Navy without money or title, returns home successful and wealthy –albeit still without title. Of Anne Elliot, the heroine, Jane wrote, “She’s almost too good for me” and wrote a woman who is resilient and mature, the oldest of Austen’s heroines. But, as Lady Russell says, “…twenty seven is no age when you have such sense and gentleness of spirit to recommend you”. These two characters are surrounded by a colorful cast of family and friends each bringing their own commentary on the effects of “over-persuasion”. For many lovers of Austen, Persuasion is a favorite. It certainly has become mine. I want to thank the Livermore Shakespeare Festival and the dedicated team that works to mount the two summer shows. Lisa Tromovitch and Katie Marcel, along with everyone who supports their efforts, have put together an artistic organization that allows for the best creative work. Thank you to all of the actors, designers, and production crew who came together to tell this lovely story. It has been my pleasure and privilege.

IN MEMORIAM

We use the First Folio texts edited by Neil Freeman for Applause Books. Neil was a friend and colleague, a Canadian scholar and inspiration to actors and directors interested in making Shakespeare’s texts come alive to modern audiences. We lost him last October. e Shakespeare Variations, “a totally new theatrical approach to the maestro’s rhythmic magic, verbal delights (and some logical necessities)” an iBook, was his last publication.
