I hope everyone’s had a great year

since we last got together in Crystal

City in 2014. NAIBA’s had a busy year,

adding 25 new bookstore members and

sponsoring a host of programs, bringing

booksellers together and increasing

our visibility with publishers. Our

board’s main objective is to fi nd ways

to creatively spend the money we raise

through advertising etc. by offering our

programs at no cost to our members

and providing discounts and rebates

whenever applicable. We’ll continue to

do so in the upcoming year and we hope

that all of you are able to take part.

We have a great line-up of speakers and

programming for this year’s conference.

Like always, when our great booksellers

get together, there’s bound to be great

book talk and exchange of ideas. I hope

you have a fruitful experience at this

year’s NAIBA conference and bring loads

of useful information and enthusiasm

back to your stores when it’s over.

Mark LaFramboise, President

Eric landed in Washington, DC in 1988 to go to grad school and started working at Olsson’s Books and Records (Dupont Circle) just before Christmas. “Which, in retrospect, is a good time to start working as a bookseller. I worked on the fl oor, bought small presses and university presses and was a receiving clerk, “recalls Eric. After Olsson’s, he worked for a few small presses before landing a job at National Book Network (NBN) in 2003 where he began his career as a sales rep. His territory included a part of the mid-Atlantic and much of the South. After leaving NBN, Eric worked as a rep for Brodart, selling to libraries for a few years. But he missed bookstores and trade publishing. He considers himself very fortunate to get the Perseus/PGW job in 2009. “I love selling in this territory,” says Eric. And based on this award, booksellers in this territory feel the same about Eric.

Sean is a life-long lover of the written word. At various points in his life, he has worn the hats of a writer, an editor, and most recently, a bookseller. His passion for local business and independent bookstores led him back to the Doylestown Bookshop as a fl oor supervisor and customer service expert. A father of two, Sean believes strongly in the value of a community-focused independently-owned bookstore as a linchpin of his town. When not at the bookshop, Sean can be found performing and teaching improvisational comedy with ComedySportz Philadelphia and the Lights, Camera, Acting studio in Doylestown, PA. He is also the creator and host of “Cracking the Spine,” a weekly podcast focusing on the world of literature.

City in a ParkA History of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park System

James McClelland and Lynn Miller

“In our gridded city of brick and stone, we take solace from the open spaces—the burst of azaleas along the Schuylkill River, the water fountain in Rittenhouse Square, the quiet repose of Laurel Hill, the ghosts of the Centennial Exhibi-tion. Encyclopedic in its reach and thoughtful in its compo-sition, City in a Park unfolds the history of Philadelphia’s expansive, sometimes surprising municipal park against the backdrop of recent and ongoing grand renewals. It reminds us of the treasures we have in our shared back, front, and side yards.” — BETH KEPHART, Flow: The Life and Times of Philadelphia’s

Schuylkill River and Love: A Philadelphia Affair

Filled with nearly 150 gorgeous full-color photographs, City in a Park chronicles the continuing efforts to create a twenty-first century version of what founder William Penn desired: a “greene countrie town.” $39.50 cloth 978-1-4399-1208-9

DONNA FELL

Owner, Sparta Books (Sparta, NJ)

Winner of the fi rst NAIBA Bookstore Challenge

“I fi rst have to say that visiting book stores has always been a hobby

of mine and this felt nothing like a challenge to me!” said Fell

throughout her travels this spring and summer. “I have always found

that booksellers have one common theme, putting a great read in the

hand of their customer.”

NAIBA challenged booksellers this spring to go out and visit other

bookstores, wherever they might be. There were no geographic

boundaries. The challenge encouraged all staffers to participate on

behalf of the store and their collective experience would go towards

points for the contest, but more importantly, strengthening their bond

with other booksellers and learning more about the industry through

each other’s businesses.

Donna Fell was regularly emailing NAIBA photos and comments from

her visits to stores. She took advantage of the time at NAIBA events to

visit with local stores; she traveled to stores in our region; and she went

on a busman’s holiday to Europe. She led the pack with 14 store visits.

“Traveling around regionally and globally has only strengthened my

theory that no matter what the language, who the customer, where

the location, booksellers want their customers to leave their store with

a book they will love,” said Fell. “Each bookstore owner or employee I

met was very willing to share information, knowledge and ideas with

me, knowing I was a fellow bookstore owner with the same interests.

Fell summed it up nicely, “There isn't another industry I would ever

want to work in, seeing how my fellow bookstore owners are not only

my equals but also ‘my friends’.”

Nancy Fanning and Amanda Zirn pose

with me at Bethany Beach Books: Loved

the subscription Book Drop idea.

Phoebe with me at Browseabout Books: Love

the vast integration of books and gifts.

Biblion Books in Lewes, DE: Used

bookstores are so unique.

Posman Books in Chelsea Market: We talked about the challenges of store

size. Love how they make use of what small space

they have.

At Libreria Senese in Siena, Tuscany:

Loved that they had an English section.

Kids was up in a loft. Wimpy Kid is popular no matter

what language, and I now have Hungry

Caterpillar in Italian!

Giunti al Punto Librerie: Take a look in the

window.....how amazing that WONDER is

touching the lives of children

everywhere. Owner says it sells "molto buono."

Although they've never heard of Dr Seuss. Not a copy of Cat in the Hat to be found.

Feltrinelli & Cancelleria: 2 book stores within the

same block in Ravenna Italy. Feltrinellis is like a B&N. The other Independent.

Somehow both surviving.

Ye Olde Warwick Book Shoppe: Love the way Tom utilizes

space and displays books and sidelines EVERYWHERE! I especially liked the book

display going up the steps.

Books & Greetings: Kenny has great

event tickets.
