“The LORD said to me: You are my servant, Israel, through whom I show my glory.” We tend to be wary of words like “servant” these days. We aren’t big fans of any kind of “servitude” that seems to be imposed on us with-out our consent. And yet, we are called not only to be servants of God but of each other. Christ Himself washed the feet of the apostles while giving them the command-ment: “love one another as I have loved you.” He did not say “cling to your independence and assert your rights staunchly.” He practiced and encouraged service, becom-ing a servant of others. God promises Israel – and we know that the promises made to Israel are fulfilled in Christ’s Church, our Church – that He will show His glory through us, as servants. The glory of God shone through John the Baptist when he testified to the Messiah and con-fessed himself a servant, beholden to the Man on whom the Spirit rested like a dove. The whole of John’s mission and identity anticipated the coming of one greater than him. We can rest assured that the glory of God shines through us when we put ourselves at the service of others – when we become humble, truly humble, not degraded or self-destructive. In the words of C.S. Lewis, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less.” Rather than belittling John the Baptist, Jesus exalted His mission and even permitted Himself to be baptized, as we celebrated last week. Service to the Messiah did not render John less glorified, but more. The more room we make for the Lord to work in our hearts, the more space He has to show forth His glory and power through us.
