FIRST QUARTER 2018

By Roger Ferris, Executive Director

O n behalf of the WFCA Board, I would like to thank all of the fire service organizations that have paid

membership dues so far in 2018. This includes fire districts and regional fire authorities, as well as a few departments and public fire authorities. Many renewed their member-ships, a few rejoined after a brief hiatus, and some became members for the first time. Whatever your particular situa-tion, we want to extend a warm welcome to your agency! Your support allows the association to continue its efforts to offer members valuable, timely educational programs, provide extensive resources, and represent the WFCA’s interests in the legislative arena.

Thank you for your continued support of the association

A Message from the President by Gerry Gustafson

T he 2018 legisla-

tive session adjourned

sine die on March 8th.

A record number of

bills were introduced

during the short 60-day session and

we did a good job “playing defense”

this year.

I want to thank everyone for

participating in the joint WFCA/

WFC Legislative Day held in Olym-

pia in January. It is extremely

important to stay in contact with

your state representatives to discuss

your concerns and Legislative Day

gives us the opportunity to visit

Olympia and keep in touch with our

elected officials.

The WFCA Saturday Seminars

are underway. More than 75

commissioners, chiefs and adminis-

trative personnel attended the

February 24th seminar in Spokane,

presented by Attorney Brian Snure.

The Commissioners’ Role and

Responsibility Seminar will be

repeated in Ocean Shores on April

7th.

The Chelan Seminar will feature a

full-day program on team building,

presented by nationally known

speaker Arnold Sanow. Please see

page three of this newsletter for

more information on this workshop.

The 2018 WFCA Annual Report will

be mailed soon to member fire

districts, departments and RFAs and

will also be posted on the WFCA

website. The report summarizes

2017 activities and provides a snap-

shot of the association’s financial and

operational condition. Please contact

the office if you have any questions.

I want to thank each of

you for your service as

fire commissioners...

I want to thank commissioners in

King County for the kind

hospitality extended to me at their

annual banquet in January, as they

celebrated their 50th anniversary.

I also attended the Sno-Isle Fire

Commissioners Association annual

banquet where I installed the new

2018 officers and trustees. Great

job Sno-Isle!

I plan to continue attending

county association meetings over

the next few months and hope to

join your group soon.

I want to welcome new Region 8

Board Director Dean Bloemke,

Clark 6, who fills the vacancy left

by Jerry Kolke. Jerry retired as a

fire commissioner at the end of

2017—thank you Jerry for your

three years of dedicated service on

the Board. We appreciate all your

efforts!

It’s not too early to think about

making room reservations for the

Fall conference, which will be held

October 25-27, at the Yakima

Convention Center. Lodging

options are detailed on page three.

In conclusion, I want to thank

each of you for your service as fire

commissioners and your continued

support of the WFCA. I appreciate

all of your good work and

dedication to the fire service. I look

forward to seeing you in the

upcoming months!

Seminar

Teams that Work… Transform Groups into Teams

It seems everything is changing faster than ever before and everyone is doing more with less. As a result, team relationships can suffer. Miscommunication,

misunderstandings, misperceptions, conflicts, internal and external strife and stress can play havoc with teams. Join nationally-ranked speaker Arnold Sanow for this interactive seminar in Chelan (Campbell’s Resort) designed to build a strong team within your fire district/RFA.
