When buying RTITB accredited training you can be assured that it will meet current standards and be recognised by industry. Do I need a licence to operate a litruck? Technically speaking there is no such thing as a ‘licence’ to operate a liſt truck. However Health and Safety Regulaons set out in the publicaon Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulaons (PUWER) as published by the HSE, regulaon 9 states that individuals need to undergo adequate training for health and safety purposes, it further expands on how this can be delivered. So you may not need a ‘licence’ but you do need to receive training. Our training is RTITB accredited which means you can rely upon us to deliver training that complies with the guidance set out in the HSE publicaon L117, Rider-operated liſt trucks, operator training and safe use. Should the worst happen, you will have met your training requirements and can provide evidence to prove it. Which liſt truck is right for me? individual with an accredited lift training ‘licence’ is that they will find it much easier to use their training record/licence on different sites and with different employers, who would find it impossible to check the quality of an ‘in‐house’ licence. The advantage of a non‐accredited licence is normally a lower price and shorter course duration, as it allows the instructor to customise the training to the benefit of the customer. We can offer both accredited and non‐accredited but would always recommend operators gain an accredited licence where possible.  Next question, getting the right course type. Generally there are four different course types, all with different durations based on driver experience and the number of drivers on each course.  The course types are; Novice Operators, designed for a complete novice that has never driven a forklift. Existing Operators, this course is for normal and competent drivers that are untrained. Refresher Course, for drivers who have either a recognised or ‘in‐house’ licence. Conversion Course, drivers with a ‘licence’ for one machine can be trained on another machine.  Examples of the durations for lift truck operator courses are; Five days for a novice operator course, three days for existing operator course, and normally a one day course for both refresher and conversion courses. ‘In‐house’ licences are designed around customer requirements and normally consist of just one or two days training, ask for further details if required.  

  What will the trainees experience? We can deliver the training either on customer premises or at our purpose built site in York, North Yorkshire. At our site we have various different loads to lift, from simple 4‐way pallets to metal corner post stillages that the driver will learn to stack 5 high and become competent at stacking laden pallets in industrial racking at up to 3 metres. Both our lift trucks and lifting/stacking equipment is regularly inspected by both the RTITB and ourselves, the lift trucks are realistic of a working environment and we aim to ensure all drivers are ‘ready to work’ after completing the training.  

  Example of an RTITB Accredited three day course.  Day one. The morning consists of greeting all the drivers to our site, usual introductions followed by handing out the lift truck operators a safety code booklet and watching a video on the dangers of lift trucks to get all trainees thinking safety, right from the start. This progresses into being shown around the lift truck before lunch, together with simple starting and stopping exercises. The afternoon builds

upon the morning session by further developing the operators’ skill at driving the lift truck using a variety of difficult steering exercises in and around pallets, cones, drums and the structure of the building. The day will be finished off by learning how to conduct a pre‐use vehicle check and re‐fueling, ready for the truck to operated on the next day.  Day two. All drivers are expected to competently carry out a pre‐use inspection, as detailed on the previous session to ensure the truck is safe to use, this is done at the start of the day. Next a short session of steering exercises to ensure all the drivers are ‘warmed up’ ready for the new tasks to be learned on day two. The instructor will explain how the hydraulics function, the massive lifting power available but also the dangers of improper use. This will be further built upon by explaining the triangle and pyramid of stability that is so often misunderstood by lift truck operators leading to lift trucks tipping over sideways when being driven. In the afternoon all this theory is put into practice by stacking a variety of loads on both the ground and using one of our HGV’s to load with palletised goods as if it will be ready to deliver these laden pallets.  Day three. Again the lift truck will be inspected by all trainees at the start of day, but this time it counts as part of the tests! Followed by driving practice using the industrial pallet racking, as found in virtually every warehouse in the whole world! Here trainees will be stacking at up to 3 metres laden pallets where there is a great need to be very accurate with the steering and gentle with the hydraulics to safely position load so that it won’t be a danger. In the afternoon it’s quiz time! All the drivers will be expected to answer a question paper, but don’t worry all the information will have been delivered during the training sessions. Then it’s on to the practical driving assessment where the lift truck operators will be required to negotiate a tight steering course followed by using the industrial racking to place and retrieve palletised loads at all the different levels up to 3 metres. Once all the trainees have successfully completed the tests, it will be time for pictures to be taken for the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) and ‘licences’ will be issued by post.
