APPROACHING GOD
WELCOME Ruth Chadwick Moore
PRELUDE Ah, Holy Jesus Johannes Brahms
(1833-1897)
* PRAYER OF THE DAY
Gracious God, in order that the children of earth might discern
good from evil, you sent your Son to be the light of the world.
As Christ shines upon us, may we learn what pleases you, and
live in all truth and goodness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
* HYMN NO. 618 O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High
DEO GRACIAS
* PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of glory, you sent Jesus among us to reveal your love for
all people. We confess that our sin and pride hide the
brightness of your light.
We turn away from the poor; we ignore the cries for justice;
we do not strive for peace.
In your mercy, cleanse us of our sin,
and pour out the gifts of your Spirit,
that, forgiven and renewed, we may show forth your peace
and love.
* SILENCE FOR PERSONAL PRAYER AND
REFLECTION
* KYRIE ELEISON
* DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
The mercy of the Lord is like rain,
like showers that water the earth.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
Praise God, we are freed from the bonds of sin!
* SHARING THE PEACE
The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.
(Worshippers may greet one another with words of Christ’s peace.)

SILENCE FOR REFLECTION
RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD
* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from the Mennonite tradition
All: We affirm that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
Miriam, Hannah, and Mary is our God.
Higher voices: We affirm that God has come to us in our
likeness, taking the form of a servant in Jesus of Nazareth.
Lower voices: We believe that God in Christ suffered the
pain and agony of the cross to provide for our salvation.
Higher voices: We believe that God demonstrated power over
sin and death by raising Jesus from the dead and declaring that
the risen Christ is Lord.
Lower voices: God has given us new life and freedom in the
fullness of the Holy Spirit, who is the guide and power of the
community of believers.
All: We believe that in the end, God’s rule of peace and
justice will be fully established and that Jesus Christ will
reign forever and ever.
ANTHEM God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending
RUSTINGTON
(Please sing stanza 3 on cue from leader) arr. David Cherwien
(born 1957)
(9:00) Section Leaders
(11:00) Chancel Choir
God, whose giving knows no ending, from your rich and
endless store:
Nature’s wonder, Jesus’ wisdom, costly cross, grave’s
shattered door,
Gifted by you, we turn to you, offering up ourselves in praise;
Thankful song shall rise forever, gracious donor of our days.
Skills and time are ours for pressing toward the goals of Christ,
your Son;
All at peace in health and freedom, races joined, the church
made one.
Now direct our daily labor, lest we strive for self alone; born
with talents,
Make us servants fit to answer at your throne.
TESTIMONY Steve Neterval
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
OFFERING

CHORAL RESPONSE Sanctus (from Mass in C Major)
W. A. Mozart
(1756-1791)
(9:00) Section Leaders
(11:00) Chancel Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna in the highest.
⸎
MUSIC IN WORSHIP
The choral response at the end of today’s service is the fourth
movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Mass in C Major,
commonly known as the Coronation Mass. One of Mozart’s 17
mass settings, this mass was written in 1779, when he served as the
court organist/composer in Salzburg during the early part of his
career.
The Sanctus movement is divided into two major sections – the
Sanctus text and the Hosanna text. As the movement opens,
“Sanctus” (Holy) is repeated three times in a slow tripel meter.
Because of the slow tempo, each beat of the triple meter is divided
into two, resulting in six beats per measure. The Hosanna section
follows in a joyous mood and faster tempo.
Our Chancel Choir and orchestra will present the Coronation Mass,
Bach’s Ascension Oratorio, and shorter choral works pertaining to
“ascension” and “sky” at 4pm Sunday, May 5, as part of the
church’s arts series – Sound & Spirit.
