Your donations mean that the WRWC River Rangers and Clean Days volunteers have been very busy, and Clean Days on the Greenway are going strong. Thank you for donating your time and money!

Collected and removed so far:

we are so thankful for all of your help cleaning the greenway!!!

Stormwater Mural by North Providence High School students, artist Brent Bachelder, and 154 volunteers at Lee Romano Field.

your donations saved bike camp!

We would also like to thank One Neighborhood Builders for recognizing the WRWC Red Shed Bike Camp with the 2016 Ovie Award for Best in Youth Programming and for honoring other amazing organizations in Olneyville.

All Red Shed refurbished bike sales support Bike Camp. Do you have one to donate?

Thieves broke into the Red Shed Bike Shop twice in June- right before the start of camp. They took tools and bikes that had been refurbished by the Red Shed staff for campers. The thieves also damaged lots of other bikes. Tony Gugliatta from News Channel 10 spread the story, and you came through in a major way! The Red Shed received bike donations, money, and manpower to make sure the campers had enough working bikes. You turned a negative into a positive!

Thank you!!

89 campers, 80 helmets, 89 locks, 75 bikes, and 10 kids learned to ride a bike for the first time.

Damage from the break-in

* 626 bags of litter * 76 cubic yards bulky debris & garbage * 34 large tires * 225 small tires ** 138 small graffiti tags removed * 126 large graffiti tags removed *

Pleasant Valley Stream-Friendly Neighborhood Pleasant Valley Stream runs through the Elmhurst neighborhood of Providence. Residents love the stream and the park it runs through. This feeder stream to the Woonasquatucket River is polluted mostly by stormwater runoff and floods often. For this project, residents learn how to make their homes more stream-friendly by: • Making their own rain

barrels• Building gardens to absorb

rain where it falls• Replacing pavement with

plants or things like paversthat allow water to sink in

Pleasant Valley Stream will also get new tree filters to collect and treat water as it runs off the street- before it enters the stream.

You’re making a lot happen at the WRWC!

You, as a donor, are making the Woonasquatucket River cleaner and reducing flooding, while helping green up our neighborhoods.

Soils and plants soak up stormwater, treat the pollution it carries, cool and beautify our neighborhoods. Two major WRWC projects show how we do it.

Olneyville Showcase: Join us on a tour next spring starting at Riverside Park where you will see nature at work everywhere. You will be amazed out how great it looks! Visit the Red Shed Green Roof, the Riverside Park bioswale, school and residential rain gardens and a rain box built by Riverzedge Arts students. While these projects seem small, they add up to a lot of green, cleaner water and flood reduction.

Thanks to your support, 563 students explored the Woonasquatucket Watershed and learned some cool science.

354 elementary students enjoyed the “Fish in the Classroom” and “Bike Camp” programs. They learned biology and environmental science, tested water, and painted storm drains to teach others how to protect the Woonasquatucket River. 52 middle schoolers joined in our after school and summer River Adventurers program. As citizen scientists, they spent their time outside on the Greenway and in the parks learning about the river and observing the plants and animals that live there. 157 high school students benefitted from the Learn One, Do One and Teach One model in our Environmental Leaders program. 9th graders at the Met School created “Sadvertisement” ~ a stormwater video that reached almost 3,000 people and had 944 views within 6 weeks. 57 students in North Providence designed and painted a mural to educate people on protecting water.

What drew you to the WRWC? For more than 15 years, we’ve enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to watch the WRWC restore, transform, and preserve the natural beauty of the Woonasquatucket River. We’re very proud to have played a role in some of their many accomplishments. We have all benefited a great deal from the dedication, hard work, perseverance, and creative management of the employees and supporters of this organization. What is your favorite thing about the WRWC? The dedication and commitment of their employees and supporters. We’re particularly impressed with their consistent “we can make it happen” attitude. Why should others give? Because this beautiful, historic river belongs to them, and it can be a great source of cultural, recreational, environmental, and economic enjoyment to all of them.
