She says it’s a comfort to know she can go to the center’s food pantry for help with groceries. Maudie chooses healthy items she can use to make meals that stretch for several days.

“Thank you for helping the people who need it,” she says to friends like you. “I think it’s wonderful that people can come here and get food!”

Your involvement makes a real difference. Whether it’s a balanced meal at a senior center, fresh produce from a mobile delivery, or nutritious groceries from a partner food pantry, you help get food to people who might otherwise go without.

I’m truly thankful for your partnership, which makes it all possible. I trust you will continue to join us as we work to end hunger across our 46-county service area.

OUR MISSION

TO FEED HUNGRY PEOPLE AND WORK TO SOLVE

HUNGER ISSUES IN OUR COMMUNITY

Feeding Hope™ 3

Dickson Woman Raising Grandson is Grateful for YOU

Dear Friend,

T his is a milestone year for Second Harvest Food

Bank of Middle Tennessee — we’re celebrating 40 years of hunger relief!

I’m also humbled to observe my own 30th anniversary at the helm of this extraordinary organization. As I reflect on what we’ve been able to accomplish together over the decades, I’m immensely grateful for your partnership in this work.

From our modest beginnings in a school basement to becoming the largest hunger-relief organization in the state, the generosity of this community has been a constant. You’ve helped food banking transform

from cans and boxes to fresh produce and protein, and our community’s health is better for it.

Of course, our work is far from over. As we look ahead, we’re striving to build food storage facilities that will allow even more people in Middle and West Tennessee to access the nutritious food they need.

Of those in need of our help, senior citizens are the first that come to mind. As Baby Boomers age, they’re quickly becoming one of the largest demographics we serve. During the cold winter months, many older adults on fixed incomes struggle to afford the increased costs of heating their homes and buying food.

MAUDIE FILLS HER CART WITH HEALTHY FOOD AT DICKSON COUNTY HELP CENTER

Your support gives hope to neighbors of all ages. For

people on low and fixed monthly incomes, you’re a true lifeline.

We recently met Maudie, a caring grandmother who lives in Dickson. She raised her children here and worked many years at an auto machine shop before she retired. Now in her golden years, Maudie’s taken on the role of parent once again — she has custody of her grandson, who she’s raising on her own.

Like many seniors today, the cost of living can be more than Maudie can afford. To help lessen the financial burden, she and her grandson are living with a family member while she saves for an affordable home of their own.

With a growing teenage boy who has a big appetite,

it’s important to Maudie that she fills the family table with healthy, balanced meals.

She does her best to provide for his needs by making hearty breakfasts – like oatmeal and eggs – to keep him full and focused for school each day. When money is tight,

Maudie has a place to turn — thanks to you. A few years ago she learned about Dickson County Help Center, a Second Harvest Partner Agency near her neighborhood.

Thank you for helping the

people who need it.

YOU’RE AMAZING!

THANK YOU, #GIVINGFOODDAY DONORS

You are the best friends a nonprofit could ask for: You donated a whopping $60,661

on #GivingTuesday (aka #GivingFoodDay). With the dollar-for-dollar match from anonymous donors, that’s an incredible 485,288 meals that you provided for your hungry neighbors. Thank you for supporting this annual Virtual Food Drive! We can’t beat hunger without you.

OUR MARCH MISSION

Creating Healthier Communities March is Nutrition Month and we are partnering with LifePoint Health

to promote the importance of nutrition in addressing hunger issues. Without healthy foods, the cycle of food insecurity is perpetuated. Through our partnership, LifePoint Health has helped Second Harvest provide 442,961 pounds (that’s 12 semi-trucks!) of fresh fruits and vegetables to our hungry neighbors. We hope you will join us as we work together to create healthier communities.

6 Feeding Hope™

With Gratitude, from Paul

Having nutritious food to eat at home is something we

often take for granted, but it couldn’t be more important — especially for neighbors like Paul who are facing health problems.

Paul’s disability forced him to stop working, so now he depends on a small, fixed, monthly income. He often worries about making ends meet. With all his expenses and medical costs, the

healthy food he needs is frequently out of his budget.

To further complicate his situation, Paul has diabetes: Treatment requires a special diet full of fresh, healthy foods. Unfortunately, nutritious items like produce tend

I appreciate it!

PAUL (RIGHT) AND HIS FRIEND RANDY ARE ALL SMILES OUTSIDE ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH IN NASHVILLE

When Second Harvest first began our work

four decades ago, hunger was a hidden problem. But with a wealth of knowledge about groceries and nutrition from Coke & McDaniels, his food brokerage firm, Bill Coke understood.

“At that time, people weren’t really aware of hunger in their midst,” he remembers. “It took a lot of persuasion to get them to understand what was going on.”

When his church began raising money to fight

hunger abroad, Bill spoke up about how the issue affects neighbors right here in Middle Tennessee. He began connecting his fellow church members with Second Harvest when we were just getting started in a school basement, and he joined our board soon after.

The immense growth we’ve experienced since then is due in large part to the dedicated

partnership of Bill and his wife, Fletch. The couple has invested time, support, and expertise over the years and even chaired the capital campaign to fund our Martin Distribution Center.

To recognize their incredible commitment, several years ago we established the Fletch and Bill Coke Hunger’s Hope Award. This special annual honor is given to volunteers who share the couple’s heart for service and leadership.

Reflecting on these past 40 years, Bill says he’s humbled by what we’ve been able to

achieve together. He truly understands the need for nutritious food, and seeing the progress we’ve made means a lot to him.

“I’d hope to see that hunger would be taken care of and there would be no need for a food bank, but that’s idealistic,” Bill says, looking toward the future. “There will always be a need for Second Harvest.”

Because of devoted people like Bill and Fletch, Second Harvest will always be here to share balanced meals and healthy groceries with those who need them most.

A Legacy of Hunger Awareness: Bill and Fletch Coke

There will always be a

need for Second Harvest.

to be among the most expensive at the supermarket.

A few years ago, Paul was passing by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Nashville and saw a sign advertising its food pantry. He’s been visiting regularly ever since.

“A big thank you!” Paul says to friends like you. “This is a blessing.”

Paul gathered groceries alongside his friend, Randy, during a trip to the food pantry. He also mentioned it’s been a real relief to fill his kitchen with the healthy food he needs to manage his disease.

Your partnership brings hope to so many people. Thank you for sharing what you have!

VANESSA’S GRATEFUL TO TAKE HOME SHELF-STABLE GROCERIES FROM GREENHOUSE MINISTRIES IN MURFREESBORO

Vanessa worked for decades in a factory and raised two boys on her

own. Now she’s disabled and relies on a small amount of food stamps to buy limited groceries. She says as hard as she tries to stretch her resources, the last week of the month is always a struggle.

That’s why she was so relieved she found Greenhouse Ministries, a Second Harvest Partner Agency near her home in Murfreesboro. She can pick up a variety of nutritious, shelf-stable items from the

food pantry, along with fresh fruits and vegetables from the Second Harvest Mobile Pantry that stops by Greenhouse Ministries each month.

More than providing life-sustaining groceries, Greenhouse Ministries has given Vanessa meaningful opportunities

to help others. She began volunteering as an intake counselor and, after a few months, she offered to teach a sewing class.

You see, Vanessa’s lived a very difficult life since she was just a little girl. She was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and taught herself to sew as a way to cope with her anxiety. Now she shares this tool with other women to help them build confidence.

Vanessa’s been teaching her neighbors to sew at Greenhouse for the past

year. Beyond just sharing a meaningful skill, the class offers a confidence-building, peer-to-peer therapeutic opportunity for women who’ve endured hardships like she has.

Vanessa’s an inspiration — she’s been able to use the turmoil from her past to help others in need. She deserves the dignity of food on her table.

“What you do is give out blessings,” she says to friends like you. “And they’ll come back to you in ways you don’t even think about!”

What you do is give out

blessings.

You’ve Renewed Vanessa’s Hope
